Actually, my watch collection consists mostly of watches that were gifts to me as commemoration of a specific life event. My first watch was from my grandfather when I achieved straight A's on my report card. I manual wind Seiko. I still have it today, though it runs about 5 minutes fast everyday. My latest watch of note is a Tissot pre-1990 Seastar that my wife's grandfather gave me as a wedding gift when I married 34 years ago. I still wear it today as my wedding band no longer fits. My dad recently handed down my great grand-father's railroad pocket watch to me. My dad had it serviced before giving it to me and it is deadly accurate. My next watch, which I am taking a l-o-n-g time looking for is my retirement watch. Thanks for your videos, Teddy. It is a great education on watch collecting, as I have never thought of my watch collection as a collection, or hobby. I'm just sentimental and hate ridding myself of things of importance to me.

Same with me. While I don’t own many watches (6 at the moment), almost all came to me as gifts or inheritances - my grandfather’s 1915 Waltham RR pocket watch, my uncle’s 1987 Rolex Datejust, 1955 IWC SS, 1966 Omega 18k Seamaster, and my dad’s 1940’s Bulova tank. I love them all, and think of the people who owned them originally whenever I put one on.

The Swatch group can do this with their brands like WWE does it with wrestlers. You have someone be the bad guy for a while, then they are assigned the role of good guy and get a special following. In watches this is done with the lowest relative quality, lume, AR, movements, then you elevate them, sprinkle in some nod to their heritage and it becomes something special.... for a while.

For me: features, style, build quality, and price. If it is the style I want, and has the right features (size, date, material, movement, etc.), is of good quality, and I can afford it, then I will purchase. Brand is as important as these things.

Try this. Not sure if that Tudor BB58 will really be your thing? Buy a decent $250-$350 homage watch with a Seiko movement and wear it for a while. You'll have the basic look and dimensions to play with to see if buying the real watch is worth it. I've done that with a couple watches, and in one case I grew to not care for the shape of the watch, and in the other, I dug the look and feel of the watch so much I ponied up the coin for the real McCoy. And the less expensive homage watches make great gifts/starter watches for sons or nephews just beginning they journey into watches.

I’m glad you pointed out the fact that you have to like the look of a watch first. There are some watches out there by big name brands that I’ve been tempted to buy, but I didn’t actually like what they look like. Just liked the name cache. Sometimes I have to sit back and say “would I like the look of this if it was an Invicta?” or some other random low tier brand.

If Longines could get out from under Swatch, I really think they could push more upwards and possibly become a more well known brand to non-enthusiasts. I honestly knew about them before I got into watches just from their advertising.

I wonder if that has a lot to do with them trying to push the Mini Dolce Vita with J Law more so than the other killer enthusiast releases like the Zulu Time 39 or HydroCon GMT
@siongheeleong8078
@siongheeleong8078 Жыл бұрын
@@josiah566You're assuming that Longines only caters to watch enthusiasts like you. Longines markets to the general public too. Their advertising has their watch ambassadors wearing their dressier watches - the types of watches that Longines sells a lot of compared to the recent burst of watches that the watch enthusiasts go for within the bubble they are in.
@josiah566
@josiah566 Жыл бұрын
@@siongheeleong8078 I get where you’re coming from but I’m just suggesting there are ways to take what are normally considered “enthusiast centric” pieces and market them to a wider audience in an authentic way. It doesn’t have to just be the Dolce Vita that gets that kind of treatment. I’m sure a lot of non1enthusiasts too would like the idea of elegantly telling two time zones on their wrist. Probably still why I only have mixed feelings towards things like the Moonswatch - great for starting conversations, but prices for collectors are another thing….

Before I took the deep dive into watch collecting (which was not that long ago)… “Seiko” and “Timex” were interchangeable in my mind. But after learning more about Seiko and its innovation, history, and quality, I’ve become a huge fan of it and especially Grand Seiko. I recently bought a Seiko SPS001, mostly for its historical significance, but also because I LOVE its look. Taking your advice now on which Grand Seiko to add to the collection… researching and waiting until I figure out exactly which one is the right one for me. Thanks Teddy. I wanted to throw out Zodiac as well as a brand that I think will become more noticeable… they have the heritage and history that watch enthusiasts respect, couple with the fact that they are releasing limited releases that pull from and improve upon their older models. The incredible colors and classic designs of the Seawolf I think are just great. Plus the 40mm size on most of their watches wear great on every wrist size. Finally at south of 2Gs they are attainable for most collectors. 😊
@SuLu_XD

I think Zodiac has major QC issues for their retail price point. I've purchased 3 Zodiac watches, still own 2 of them, and all 3 have small flaws that should not be present on a watch with a retail price of $1300+. I'm talking applied indices not aligning with the lume markers (noticeable with the naked eye from a typical viewing distance), diving bezels being misaligned by half a degree or more, and the STP 1-11 movements being a piece of ass to interact with. I purchased all of mine for nearly half of retail price but I still had to sell the one with the fucked indices and bezel. I love their designs and history but they need to really step it up if they want to be taken seriously outside of super niche Zodiac fans.
@PostBakka
@PostBakka Жыл бұрын
@@SuLu_XD that’s terrible. Not the experience I have had with Zodiac. I have the Crystal Toppers Edition Seawolf GMT. Too me, it’s a nearly flawless watch, especially at the price point. I paid about 1300 for it. No misalignment issues, no issues with loom. Can dress it up or dress it down. It’s not a “true” GMT but still does the trick. But I hear you, need to have more consistency across the board if you are having issues with yours.

Tag Heuer are interesting because they're a brand who have done arguably the hardest part in being something of a household name, but their actual watches rarely seem to cause much of a stir. If they could revolutionize their lineups like Longines I think they could explode.

TAG Heuer needs to standardise some of their in-house three hand movements, as well as giving their smaller collections like the Link and Autavia a facelift. I know that people think the Connected should burn, but really if they manage to fix the major points concerning connectivity and battery life I think they would hold a stronger position and value in that market, serving as an effective entry-level piece and staple part of the collection.

Thanks Teddy! Love your work. GS SLGH005 is the best overall watch of the brand and my personal favorite along with the “Snowflake”. I think Grand Seiko has the potential to go mainstream really soon based on their unbeatable quality. After all the brand has the cache of innovation, quality and manufacturing ability to be on a level higher than Rolex.

Grand Seiko definitely needs a little improving from my experience just two days ago. Saw your review of GS and the spring drive which compelled me to buy one this week ... HOWEVER ... Grand Seiko - Quality Control and Company Response TBD!! Heard so much about the Grand Seiko line and the Lake Suwa watch. The Spring Drive truly is in theory a great innovation and the sweeping second hand is impressive to look at. Quick run down: Bought one in Japan from authorized GS dealer and two days later found that the 5 day claim was inaccurate because it stopped after less than one day. Yes and the rear case back power reserve showed that it was full. Just two days and I never even sized or wore it yet. I immediately took it back to GS dealer that has offered to send it in to GS repair center to see what happened. This is somewhat concerning because list price is over 9K and you wouldn't expect this to happen to a Grand Seiko! I told the GS dealer if it requires opening up to repair I want a new replacement because this is brand new/never worn. So how would you feel if you bought a new watch and immediately it needed emergency care? Let's see how Grand Seiko responds to this "hopefully anomaly" and do the right thing because if Im the manufacturer and its an internal issue I would surely want to do the right thing and replace it right away. So far a bit disappointed to say the least and your viewers should be aware of this issue as well if they are considering this model.

Great job as usual TB... congrats on the big day. One thought I had was, doing a review by COUNTRY of what is available, including microbrands. Some would be easy, but others may be shockingly layered with variety and style differences. Whatdoyathink? Keep up the great work and know it's appreciated by us watch nuts. 😊

You asked what other companies your fan would be interested in touring - if the opportunity ever arose, I’d be very interested in seeing inside a few of the top luxury brands - Rolex, Patek, AP - to see what makes them so special, other than their finished products.
