I agree with the choking theory. Points that are great from the video: 1) The distraction theory suggests that the performace suffers when the mind is preoccupied with worries, doubts, or fears, instead of focusing its attention on performing the task at hand. 2) We usually need to perfom actions subconsciously, instead of looking at the precise details. 3) We need to practice under stressful conditions. We must be accustomed to pressure. 4) We need to extol the virtues of a pre-performance routine, like taking deep breaths, repeating a cue word, or doing a rhythmic sequence of movements. Points that I'd like to add here to address stressful situations: 1) We shouldn't ask "What If?", cause that will make us to panic. 2) We must stay positive in the situation. 3) We must make jokes. By making jokes, we don't take everything seriously. 4) No mater whatever we do, we should remember that this isn't so bad. 5) We must have some trust on external or internal things.

There's a manager at work who is fine when not in front of a crowd (where he has to speak every day in small shift meetings). When he has to talk, he _sounds_ fine. His voice is smooth, but his hands are shaking. I admire his courage to face that level of nerves on a daily basis. It's worse when we have the big, all-store meetings and he's in front of hundreds. He gets up, does his part, but his hands tremble so badly, I wonder what it feels like in his heart...

Hello there, just wanted to share my experiences with failing driving tests multiple times which brought me to this video. I have an anxiety disorder which is getting worse, I have been at the hospital a few times this month due to unknown cause of pain that has been bothering me for years. Anyways, driving has always been a skill I knew I"ll be good at and love it but when it came to tests (final tests, on the road) I panicked and failed 3 times. I made mistakes I have never made on my driving lessons which shooked me and my instructor. I was just to overwhelmed with fear of failure, school, finals and other personal problems. After every test I have failed my confidence just kept falling down to the ground. I have a test this week after being sick for a solid month. I can't let stress overwhelm me so I will try to keep my mind on the end goal, not the performance and details. Thank you for this video. If somebody who read this has some other advice I would love to hear it.

I agree with the fact that when you start thinking about something which you can do with muscle memory/subconsciously, you choke. I play the piano, and I always learn a song in a way that it is in my muscle memory so that I don't make mistakes. Whenever my coach asks me to play the song, or if somebody else is seeing me play, I just start thinking about what I am playing and mess up everything. Loved this video, it was very helpful.

Exactly. I once wrote a math contest without being informed that it was a really important contest and did really well. But when I practiced for months for another contest, I forgot everything once I got there and did poorly. I still remember how I got thrown into an extemporaneous speech contest back in 9th grade (actually it was just last last year lol). The teacher in charge gave a speech, advices and all. Throughout his whole speech was a quote, *"Grace under pressure."* And somewhat it came to me. Just act as if you're explaining to a friend, to a classmate on that certain topic. You don't have to delve into it too much.

the seconds explanation makes a lot of sense, I've always been naturally really good with sports once I do the fundamentals a few times. Since my body's used to being in auto-pilot when I play I choke when I start to think about how I'm going to execute a move, thanks Ted-Ed

Perfection in the art of swordsmanship is reached, according to Takuan, " when the heart is troubled by no more thought of I and You, of the opponent and his sword, of one’s own sword and how to wield it˙no more thought even of life and death. All is emptiness: your own self, the flashing sword, and the arms that wield it. Even the thought of emptiness is no longer there." From this absolute emptiness, states Takuan, " comes the most wondrous unfoldment of doing Extract of Zen in the art of Archery

Hahaha! I guess I should thank my friends who made me practice playing the piano under pressure before performing in a small concert. At the time I thought it was so weird that I kept asking them to stop doing it because they were literally staring intensely at me right in front of the piano as I was playing.

Ive read a lot about this in psychocybernetics and also have expreinced this with public speaking let me share you a story. So i am a public speaker in college i do speeches and anchorings and ive gotten pretty good at it. Ive performed both really terribly and also really well. The difference really is just how much you care. The trick ive found is practice and then relax. So before a performance you want to practice really hard. You want your script memorized and practiced atleast 10 times. You want to practice under pressure aswell. What my teachers help me do is that they take me to the auditorium hall and make me practice on stage. You can also do so at home, place a bunch of chairs and talk to them. Speak to yourself in a mirror or talk to others. The best practices however are the ones where you practice in front of an audience. This ties perfectly with practice under pressure. First you can start without pressure and once you feel confident with this you can speak infront of others. You want to be prepared so that that you dont have to think so mhch this means you must know your topic inside out or atleast have the script memorized. You want to keep your concious thoughts before the actual perfomance. Now another thing you can do is visulize, visulize yourself getting the desired result. The claps, the applause, the intrest of the audience. The praise and compliments. Imagine all that. You want to focus on the WHAT not the how. Now its time to actually give it. Now its time to turn on your insticints and give your concious mind a rest. On the day of performance you have to relax and try to psyche up yourself and have a good mood. You have to stop caring and let the responsibility off your shoulders Imagine leaving it to the god, unverse, fate or whatever entity you wish. Imagine in detail giving all your burdens and responsibility to this person. And feel your body feel lighter. The key is to be completely detached from the HOW. Bring your attention to the present moment and focus only on that. No more preparation, no more practice. Simlly let go Rely on instincts now to lead. For me i just leave it all to my subconcious. We all know how to speak and we can speak very well. The problem is that we rely way too much on our concios mind to do thst task but its actually limited and not meant to "do" Plan all you want and practice consciously, use your conscious to think about the what you want not on the how. Focus on what you want and the subconcious will take care of the how. You want to while execution keep the beleif that it will work out focus delusionally on it. Theres so much more i can say public speaking and the human mind is one of my passions. I recommend you guys prepare before an event. Plan before and do all your thinkinf and preparing beforehand but once its time to act. Simply imagine the best result, think it is possible. Let your instinct's take over and the concious sleep. You do this and you will give the best performance of your life

This would happen to me all the time when I was playing volleyball. I was quite a good player but everytime I went to a match I would constantly think "what if i do terribly?" and of course I would end up choking. I mean it didn't help that my own team always hated me. I just couldn't take the pressure anymore and had to quit :(

This would help me a lot, most of the time I put myself under pressure even if I don't need to. I can't express myself properly if I focus on what I am about to say, I forget the choreography because I'm thinking about the next stepping, and I mess up when I think about how the other people look at me. At least I know what to do now. Thanks! ❤ I hope I don't scare myself again.

I've noticed both of these phenomenons acutely when skateboarding (I'm a relative beginner). I'm a natural over-thinker, and when I just concentrate on the details--pop the tail, slide your foot up the board, jump with your back foot at just the right moment, catch the nose, bend your knees--all while thinking "What if I slip out and hit my head?", I can't ollie at all. One night I got so frustrated after failing (and falling) so many times, I decided I didn't care if I fell or got hurt. I was so mad at my brain I told it to shut up because I was doing this whether it liked it or not. That night, I ollied while rolling for the first time ever. It was so easy, I couldn't believe it. I then proceeded to do it five more times.
