I love Khan academy. I'm an engineer now, but due to some scheduling conflicts back in high school, I never got to take trig. I was taking physics, the teacher also taught calc, and he waived the trig requirement since I knew the basics from physics. Needless to say, I had a lot of holes in my math knowledge and Khan academy did wonders in filling those.

Really awesome gyu. I just love Khan academy and it's content . Everything that he said was directly applicable to me. I took maths as my subject in class 11 12 (India) . But even after I completed my 11 I felt like I was not good enough. Then I started using Khan academy and filled my previous gaps of basic algebra , trigonometry etc. And after that things started getting interesting and easy. Not only that it even helped me with other new topics. It was not as if my teachers weren't good or I didn't like the subject but all those gaps in my previous classes held me back. So thank you for helping me Khan academy.

I have known about the Kahn Academy for some time and have appreciated it's approach to self paced learning; but didn't realize the extend to which they have implemented monitoring and tracking of student participation. I spent much of my career teaching technical topics and developing technical personnel and intuitively used some of these ideas and fully appreciate them. The student monitoring techniques development was teacher driven - and as such - I believe any teacher would love to implement this approach to learning with their students!! Personally - I think it should be implemented in all public education - pre-school thru PhD !!

Statistically home schooled children do better on standardized tests. You are right that if the parents are not intelligent enough to teach, then they should not. As to integration into a social scene, that is where sports teams, clubs, volunteer initiatives etc come into play. My daughter takes piano, soccer and is bilingual; I have a good education and if I had the means to, I could home school her to an ivy league education. Its more the unavailability of the parents that dont make it viable.

I can't agree that homeschooling is the best, many adults don't have a working knowledge of many of the advanced topics taught in highschool (or its equivalent). Not only will the education fall short, but the socialization aspect of school is quite important. I'm not saying that the school system is efficient- far from it. I haven't met a socially well-adjusted homeschooled person, though, and I've been friends with more than a couple. And it makes their life in college quite overwhelming imo

my current opinion is indifferent, though i want to see schools incorperate things that they can do now that they couldn't do 5 years ago into their learning. i mean almost every student has a smart phone, but instead of utilizing that device you ban them from being used during school hours? that doesn't seem correct. It made sense back when phones were only used for calls and texts but now they are powerful devices that can be used for education.

...Not everyone has Smart Phones, not everyone can be trusted to use them responsibly. Education still needs a lot of work in the West, to avoid growing into a disgusting, pressured, test-ridden experience that occurs in the East, or into something anarchistic and trivial. However, I don't believe phones should be fundamental in learning. I would agree with computers, but phones are too hard to monitor and cross certain personal boundaries for students.
