Fun fact: Another man, the king of Leinster, Diarmaid mac Murchadha, actually decided to pull off what happened in the myth in 1152 by abducting one of the wife of the king of Breifne, Tiernan O'Rourke. In response, the high king Ruadhri Ua Conchobhair deposed him in 1167, and he in response, called over the Norman leader Richard de Clare, aka Strongbow, to invade Ireland, marrying his daughter to him. Diarmaid got back his throne, while Strongbow got a large chunk of Leinster. In response, Henry II was forced to invade himself so that Strongbow and any other Norman lords didn't become too powerful, and established the Lordship of Ireland, beginning English rule of Ireland.

The animation is funny, and the narration is humorous and witty. Such a tragically poetic myth. One moment's hesitation over past grudges can lead to tragedy. Also, I always enjoy Irish mythology because it gives me the chance to learn just how badly I've been pronouncing the names in my own head xD

But it definitely highlights the fact that as humans, sometimes we can't always control our lingering regrets or grudges. And the King's lingering resentment sadly caused the hesitation that cost his friend's life.

This is a nice version, somewhat different from Lady Gregory’s, though. In Lady Gregory’s, Diarmuid isn’t attracted to Grainne until much later, and is resentful of him. This is part of what makes the story so compelling. This is also missing the scene where Grainne stabs Diarmuid, the broken bread, the cave etc, which is arguably the core scene of the myth! Also, Grainne ends up with Fionn at the end!

My friend called my with a long list of mistakes i made in our friendship. I felt betrayed because she forgiven me when I asked for forgiveness and also while i tried to be a better person. Seems like that my efforts werent good enough for her and when she argued me with the list of things i made wrong the friendship ended. Id been fuming for days hurting myself with the anger... the ending of this story made understand that anger and resentment can ruin our lives and the lives of others arround. I preffer to understand that she might have some issues to work on and that me holding on to anger is not benefiting me in the long run. We might not be friends anymore but i dont have ill will towards her. I wish her the best.

/: it follows the gist of the story but simplifies it a bit too much, and misrepresents certain things. Obviously they can't include everything, but the fact the episode with the pirates deserved more than a sentence, and the fact the boar was destined to kill Diaarmuid since childhood feels pretty important, not to mention the extent to which the Fianna began turning against Fionn, or the fact that Diarmuid and Grainne were *inside* the enclosure, it was not a trap as far as I know?

Which version is this? I feel it censored and watered down a lot of what I’ve read in every other telling of the myth of Diarmuid. Especially since in only one story I read aside from this one-he flat out refuses Grainne. Has zero interest, and there is no battle between desire and obligation. He cries and admonishes z Grainne for FORCING him to betray Fionn with the Geass, to which he calls her vile. He tells Aengus to send her to her father if he were to die to send her back and he doesn’t care how her father treats her. She stabs him for being angry that he fought some guy that wanted to marry her in this cave even though she ran with him. Etc etc there’s so much missing that I remember. But I know there’s tons of telling of this story, so ollleeease provide me sources. Diarmuid is my favorite mythical character and I want to read every damn tale that has his name in it and every version of it haha

What I heard:- Girl is promised to old man. She runs away with the first young-ish man she sees. Puts the young man under her spell just incase. Old man finally lets her go and even reaches out to broker peace. Old man is at fault for not saving the life of the person that stole his wife-to-be and humiliated him in front of his own men. ... You know, in Greek mythology this would have been seen as divine retribution. The boar would have been sent by Zeus and Hera would have planted the seed of hesitation in his heart to make the water slip. The entire pantheon would have been on it!

Noone ever addresses the people who slight others. That old betrayal cost that man a second chance at life. People will resent you and it may never go away. What do you expect when you hurt others? Forgiveness is a cute concept, but it is not always guaranteed that you’ll have it. Be good whilst you can.
