The video omitted that Pandora was given a great deal of empathy. When she opened the box, she really felt all of the intensity of the world's shame, horror, anger, hatred, and all other dark and terrible things. She was devastated and only in the darkest hour, came the glimmer of hope. With tears in her eyes, she looked up to see ... Batman!

I think that the more interesting question is why hope was in the box. Is it truly to ease the horrors she unleased, or is hope just another kind of horror keeping us from taking different actions?
@logos1.618
@logos1.618 2 жыл бұрын
Well, ελπις (elpis = hope) was in the same class of evils things in the box/jar. The question of why it wasn't released is quite an important one. You second hypothesis about hope being a kind of horror, I agree with. For hope ultimately makes one passive, there is no need to work for 'fire' or 'the arts.' Pandora's Box was a gift, humans are given problems to deal with and learn from, without hope compromising the pursuit of learning and action.
@haydenchan7060
@haydenchan7060 2 жыл бұрын
Why Elpis is in the box-well, it’s not just to ease the horrors she unleashed. Hope remained in the jar because hope will never abandon humans. We will always have hope even in the darkest times, even when Zeus’ mini horror army is wreaking havoc on the world. That is the true reason why Elpis remained in the box, which is actually a pithos, a jar.

@aohbmaeid

To me it shows that hope is always the last thing standing. All the evils burst out of the box (pithos), but hope lies in wait for you to release it, it won't leave without you letting it. I do agree that hope can be quite destructive in some cases however.

@@Harrier_DuBois Hope can be destructive when your heart is broken. In cases where it's crucial to accept that something is over, namely. After a breakup, if you keep hoping it can work out when it's a toxic or unhealthy relationship. When losing someone to death, or when things change permanently in life, as they must; we always hope that it can go back to where it was. I disagree. Like you mentioned, the gods themselves were subject to Fate. Their hope, in spite of their knowledge of this, and of their belief in an afterlife full of suffering, was almost an affirmation of their suffering. They found meaning in it. I'd it's not quite a delusion, but a rejection of a life without meaning due to Fate.

Pandora's box serves as a reminder of the importance of mindfulness and the need to think things carefully before doing an action. The story highlights the balance between hope and despair in life. On my opinion curiosity can be both a blessing and a potential source of trouble. On the other hand curiosity drives innovation, creativity, and personal growth. Curiosity motivates us to explore, learn, and understand the world around us, however, unchecked curiosity can lead to unexpected consequences and danger, as I've seen in the story of Pandora's box. The story suggest extreme consequences on tempering with the unknown, but Pandora's burning curiosity also suggest the duality that lies in the heart of human inquiry… The story will always remind us that, although bad things are happening around us, there is still beauty left the world and the only thing that we need is ourselves to help it to find.

I think the stories are similar because there really are sacred plants on Earth that will show people a lot more than society was ready for at the time. People back then feared what they couldn't understand. Furthermore, there are also many deadly plants that can cause mania, so they probably didn't want people to go experimenting with everything that came their way.

From what I have read before, the gods made Pandora to punish Ephimetheus’s brother, Prometheus who has stolen the gods’ fire and gave it to mortals. So the gods made Pandora and gave her to Ephimetheus and gave her the box containing humanity’s greatest disgraces so that this family would be blame (to punish them for what Prometheus did). So she opened the box out of her internally given curiosity’s for released these disgraces out into the world. But the gods did not intend to leave the mortals in absolute peril so they put in Elpis, or Hope in the box also. Hope that helps heheheh

The Greeks did not believe in a happy afterlife, quite the opposite. If anything, their hope was rooted in finding beauty and meaning in spite of their suffering. When Odysseus found Achilles in the underworld, all Achilles hoped for was one more day on Earth, even as a poor farmer. He regretted his choice of choosing immortality through his heroics versus living a life full of inherent suffering.

However this is not the full story of Pandora, you’re missing why Pandora was created and why Zevs gave her the box, leaving out the duality of hope as Zevs didn't place it there as a blessing but as hope is what makes life worth living despite all the sorrows in belief of a better time, hence making it the blessing of fortitude and the curse of self-torment

Some fun facts I've heard about this story: -Pandora was a gift from Zeus to Epimethius. -The box was a gift to Pandora on her and Epi’s wedding day. -Zeus made Pandora as a punishment, giving her the box knowing she would open it. Pandora was created to bring the punishment of mankind (Death, Disease, Greed, Sorrow, etc.) for accepting the gift of fire from Prometheus. Pandora opening the box was all a part of Zeus’s plans for revenge on man. Zeus always gets his way and his honor. Correction: Zeus didn’t create Pandora he ordered her creation from Hephaestus (the God of Forge), who was also ordered to chain Prometheus.

Great video! However, from all of our orginal Greek sources, it's Pandora's Pithos, a type of Greek jar, not a box. Pandora's Box is a mistranslation. Secondly, this plan was devised by the gods as a way to hurt mankind and blame it on Epimetheus, Prometheus's brother, as another way to further punish Prometheus for gifting fire to mankind, and to punish mankind for receiving it. This version of the story could possible exist, but it is very unlikely, and contains many modern additions. The Greek Gods were not viewed as benevolent, but merely reflections of reality. Ted-ed's versions of these myths are not accurate reflections of the greco-roman mythos, but they have animations so thats cool.

fun fact: the original story never indicated that pandora didn’t know what was in the pythos. Pandora was the gods punishment for humanity after prometheus gave them fire. also, at least in the versions i’ve read, hope never left the pythos, being symbolic of how hope will not leave humanity

Hope - a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. I can see why it needed to be locked away. Depending on the perspective and understanding of the individual it'll provide an infinite energy of will power to persevere and overcome any/all obstacles in that pursuit. Whether the goal and means to achieve are harmful is a non-factor since hope for your better future is all you need to push onward. Not too mention its powerful synergies with hate, love, despair, peace, and many others. Sucks there wasn't a god to teach mankind how to properly care for ones own hope, raise, manage it and not allow it to disappear or overwhelm us.

@@CistudeSuisse it's way more different. First of all , Abrahamic God was explicit which would happen if they eat that and what they would receive. Second of all , it was not Adam and Eve alone , they were tempted by the Serpent , which is Satan. As such , that Tree was a test , in which Adam and Eve failed. Even though they failed that test and was punished with mortality and it's hardship , we know they were also continously blessed by God , as he often visits them , been even some central point in Caim & Abel. While Zeus , on the other hand , makes Pandora as a twofold punishiment: first to Epimetheus as he was Prometeus' brother and second to mankind as they received Prometeus' gift of fire.

Jacob Clark the way I’ve always heard it was that upon seeing the evils escape she quickly closed the box, trapping the last spirit inside, named Hope. Kinda runs with the Greek theme of everything being dismal.

Zeus was 'afraid' of mortals, he didn't like Prometheus' creations and hence he wanted to deter their growth. He created the perfect creature in form of Pandora, and all the Gods filled the box with vile diseases and emotions which was ultimately opened by Pandora because yeah, that's what she was meant to do, a tool of sorts. That's the version I remember being told as a kid and I have always read that version in books

My burning curiosity has led me to the path of divination which has changed my perspective of the World forever and cannot be reversed even though I miss my old perception of life but there is a silver lining of hope even though I am a bit pessimistic and confused about this new path at the current moment.
