@@TedNemeth I'm a big fan as well man! You're sharing knowledge that no one else is really talking about. Quick question for you...I know you push auto exposure, which makes sense. What if you were shooting on a Mavic 3 Pro? Would you still be choosing auto or using pro for any reason? I assume still auto for the most part but I've always been told to go manual, which is what I currently do, but auto seems SO tempting now. Am I missing anything?

Master Class by a master. Thank you. 3. Sculpting Light/Time of Day the hardest part of developing cinematic habits. I always think I have time, I want to go out and fly my drone. WRONG! My lesson from you from more than one vlog is 1-Find a subject 2-Decide on the best time of day to shoot the subject. So I have to be a director first, subject, story, mood/lighting and plan how best to achieve the goal. Creative thinking must come first. I can not just launch the drone and push record to get cinematic footage. What I have learned from you. Thank you again.

As a former journo who had to take their own photos, I always tried to take the most informative photo I could take. The more the photo was able to tell the story, the less I had to write! That does involve a lot of what was talked about here - no distractions in particular. Get the most simple elements of the story in the shot and do it as a momentary observer, not in a pre-arranged or staged style. Weighting is important - we've all seen shots of high human emotion, where there'll be a protestor (looking as they do) holding a sign or a coloured flare in the air. Meanwhile, there's a policeman in full riot gear with a Perspex shield approaching or in the background. The magical balance! The impact of a weighted image is variations of that. A wrecked car Vs shocked people, an athlete on a finish line Vs a crowd standing and fist punching the air. A good newspaper and in particular its photographers, should provide a multitude of examples of how to take photos with impact, although it does seem like a dying art these days!

Ted, you're a legend... I'm a photographer, but although i 'think' in moving images i've always found videography EXTREMELY complicated. I couldn't translate what i 'see' in my head with how i could make it into a small video without a whole team and a budget and ... a videographer! The videographers always said photography was too hard for them, but i couldn't understand why. This... 13:30 here captures it perfectly. I was lost by all the technical bits and because i'm a proficient technical photographer that has long put aside the technical bits and all the compositional bits and the lighting and everything you talked about... I underestimated what i was bringing to the table. I forgot my strengths in composition and lighting.. was instead too focussed and intimidated by the technical bits in making a video. Now, finally i understand what to do and i'm so excited to be getting out there to scope out my intended scene.

Just a small suggestion that came to my mind in the very last scene of the video (the almost-black-and-white one), which I personally always adhere to: if there are clearly visible lines in the image, such as the orientation of the beams of the pier you're sitting on in that scene), make sure they go "up", i.e. bottom-left to top-right. It is a weird psychological effect that such an orientation is perceived "optimistic" and "cheerful", as if it lifts up your spirit. The opposite orientation unconsciously drags you down, psychologically speaking. Try it out by horizontally mirroring that last scene - it will unconsciously appear "better". That trick works for drone footage and still images alike.

Great work Ted 😀 This video is so rich of useful information that l will have to come back often to try to make it stick in my brain 😂 Moast Drone content creators who are trying to make a living out of this, have to advertise filters and try to sell Luts that they have created themselves, and it is understandable. They often show us clips that were filmed in D-Cinieike which is flat and dull, and then they add their luts to make it colorful and perfectly exposed, and we the beginners often think that this is what we have yo do to get correctly exposed shots. I think that the majority of drone users are taking photos and filming in auto mode, and l am sure they would do much better if they tried to learn from you and followed your advice, instead of focusing too much on filters and manual mode that so many content creators want us to focus on. Keep up the good work. I for one will be waiting for your next episode 😊

yes! ah man I’m super glad to hear you enjoyed the episode my friend. Yup i went through the entire beginner arc of learning, experimenting, discovering, iterating, then….finding my own creative style/voice. Now I’m just sharing what works for me. It’s super interesting when i look at my KZbin analytics…..the average age of my viewers is between 40yrs to 60yrs old. I’m 51 so I think, maybe my experiences seem to be resonating with this demographic. Gunnstein thank you for supporting the channel good sir.
