Come on, you're not always racing and chasing numbers. U would feel 1000 times better if you had the engagement that MT gives you. The feeling of always challenging yourself to shift faster and at the perfect time is way better than driving automatic. There are many boring cars and SUVs that have decent 0-60 times. It is not about numbers anymore. It is about having fun.

I'd hate to add another comment to the pile of complaints regarding the front end, but, wow, it really stands out against the white paint. The front of the G80 looks exactly how the F80 sounds... gruff and garish. Luckily. it seems that the S58 sounds better than the S55, but BMW had to figure out some other way to hurt our senses.
@Enthusiastlist
@Enthusiastlist Жыл бұрын
@@mehmett.bakkal8257 what the hell are you talking about the S55 and S58 are nothing alike other than they’re both twin turbo i6s. I spoke to a BMW engineer at a track day about why the S55 sounds terrible & he said the exhaust manifold to the turbos was changed multiple times due to emissions & what they ended up with gives it an uneven pulse, the S58 doesn’t really have that thus sounds infinitely better.

Thanks for the review as usual Tedward ! Thing is (no news there), those new cars are being developped to be at optimal performance with an automatic trans (torque converter / dct / etc. ). It's great because manuals still exists and I do love my manuals, but somehow they feel and show that they are not being developped quite as much, which is obvious because it's time and money consuming for the manufacturer. And it's not as easy today slapping a good old manual in because of all the software that's involved (porsche gt product aside, I presume). The new shifter feels a bit too rubbery for my liking, but at least for every day you are not feeling everything coming from the old zf s5 trans. The sweet spot was the e39 to me. I had the opportunity to drive the F30 and G20 back to back and I felt lost I have to say. I understand the position they are defending (attracting new customer and so on). I really felt the evolution from one generation to another till the f30, but the g20, couldn't feel home (and the quality perception felt down to me). Anyway enough talking from me ^^

Yet Another great video, keep it up! Here is my opinion, no one asked for it, but here it is, my opinion which is entirely mine. I really really like the G20 3 series, in-fact I would even go as far as to say that I adore it (even though i first hated it, but it grew on me), i don’t have that much of an issue with the pig nose (G80?) M3, I’m just not a fan of the “pig nose” M3 front end. Yes i have seen it in person and I still don’t like it particularly much, I prefer the regular G20 front end to the “pig nose”, I don’t actually hate it but I don’t like it. The G22? 4 series and G82? M4 on the other hand, I really don’t like how they look, I find them hideous from every single angle, it says a lot about the 4 series/M4 when my favorite exterior part of them is the one I like the least on the 3 series the M3/M4 “pig nose”. The funny thing is I really didn’t like the F32/F82 (older 4 series), probably mostly due to me being annoyed that the 3 series Coupé wasn’t a 3 series anymore, i really didn’t care that much about them and then I drove one in to the shop and I ended up quite liking it, that will probably never happen with the G22/G82. I quite like BMW, grew up around Volvos but I also have had a soft spot for BMWs, love the e46 which goes perfect with the P24 S60 (i have one of those), Volvo has pretty much done everything they can to alienate their entire enthusiast side lately (pathetic 180Km/h limiter, No leather, awful Google infotainment, they killed the M66, boring EVs with disappointing range and fraudulent range claims). The C40 which I consider to be a direct insult to enthusiasts like myself was the straw that broke this camels back, it is quite literally every single thing wrong with Volvo in one car, I’m DONE! Volvo has pissed someone who grew up with relatives working at Volvo Torslanda, some who was pretty much born a Volvo enthusiast, off to the point where I’m done, I don’t care about the new stuff because there is nothing to care about, anything newer than 2019 / early 2020 and I’m getting a BMW instead. In fact i liked working on BMWs so much (that brief period before everything fell apart at home and I completely burned out), that my next car might be a F11 5 series or G31 if I wait or i might get another P2 Volvo (I have a unhealthy obsession with those). Time will tell.

I feel like with modern manual cars you HAVE to tune out the rev hang to really get the most out of them. All these modern emissions laws have made many modern manual cars have atrocious rev hang. I'd LOVE to see how this M4 drives when that is tuned out!
@philtheairplanemechanic
@philtheairplanemechanic 2 жыл бұрын
Every time I've driven a manual with a modern electronic throttle rather than a cable throttle it's always been more difficult to drive for me and just generally much more unpleasant. The rev hang combined with the more numb feeling most have make it harder to downshift until I really get the feel of the car. All the manuals I've owned have been cable throttle and I prefer that so much more. The engines have all felt more responsive and easier to predict.

Great video! I love the balanced approach you took with reviewing this car. Personally, I like this significantly more than the F80 generation. The S58 sounds better, and it seems like it makes its power higher up in the rev-band than the S55. Sure, it’s tail happy, but the F80 was stupidly tail happy. Could barely put its power down unless conditions were perfect. From what I saw here, it put its power down pretty well. Seemingly more sophisticated TC system than in the F80. Also, the interior build quality has improved over the F80. I don’t get the point of the M4, as it’s gotten too big to be a tossable coupe. The M3 makes a lot more sense. Can’t wait for the M2, and I genuinely think the worst thing about the G80/G82 is the looks. Sure, the steering still needs improvement but from what I’m hearing otherwise it’s much improved over the F80.
@gepixelt7712
@gepixelt7712 2 жыл бұрын
I've driven both and the biggest difference to me is the front grip of the car. The old M4 had 265 rear and 255 front, the current one drives thicker 285 rear and 275 front which is really insane in terms of grip and cornering speeds. The current M4 is a real track tool. It lost some of it's BMW-ish character, because it doesn't really want to drift anymore like the previous one. For me, it feels more like a Porsche in terms of handling.
@aaronfreeman3890
@aaronfreeman3890 2 жыл бұрын
I really dont get the whole "m4 is too big to be tossable" argument I hear so often from people. Like both the m3 and m4 have an identical 112.5-inch wheelbase. The M3 is 4.6 inches longer, 0.4-inch wider, and 0.1-inch higher than f80 and the M4 is 4.6 inches longer, 0.7-inch wider, and 0.4-inch higher than f82. By that logic the m3 has gotten to be too big to toss around too. I doubt people are really griping over 0.3in diffrence in width between the m3/m4, especially those who are actually tracking their cars. The m4 is the same car with 2-less doors, not a full fledged 5 series or something like that. In any case the cars are heavier, wider and higher off the ground than last gen m's, and they are clearly proven to be more tossable than the previous cars in the bends. So really its not about the size or weight of a coupe that dictates tossablity. Its about how well the car manufacturer has dynamically hid the weight from the driver on track, which is what the m5 cs and g-series platforms in general have excelled at.
@pascutia
@pascutia 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaronfreeman3890 I get what you’re saying. My logic is that if I wanted a coupe, I’d get an M2. There’s no point in having such a large coupe (the M4) when a vehicle of the same size (the M3) is more practical as a 4 door, and I think looks better.
@aaronfreeman3890
@aaronfreeman3890 2 жыл бұрын
@@pascutia well fair enough then if you prefer smaller coupes, or more practical cars in general, I cant imagine anything bigger than a 3 series these days will cut it for ya. M2 is a great car in its own right just a bit stripped down for my taste. Track demon tho I do think the advantage of the larger coupes is found in how they actually morphs into a GT cars in a way. Like with my f82 I feel like its half race car and half grand tourer. I feel like an m8 is the pinnacle of this formula. my m4 is perfect for taking corners/bends, but Im also making a move to a new city in a couple weeks (bought a new home) and Im not even worried about the almost 1500 mi journey. The car is great for road trips and quite comfortable for long term drives with plenty of self driving aid. So its actual quite practical in that regard as it doubles for both purposes. An m2 would be a nightmare to putt around in for 8-10 hours imo

Still can’t get over the buckteeth personally. Does sound much better than the S55 from the inside for sure, though, even if a lot of it is piped in. I think given that manuals nowadays are purely about fun and involvement and not outright straight line performance, perhaps a manual would be better suited to the M340/440i models since they’re not trying to be the utmost in speed and handling capability.

This car drives great but I still can stand that grill, & seeing it in person hasn’t change my opinion either, just terrible. Still hate the driving feel like in the F80, where BMW still hasn’t figured out how to make the driving feel transfer over from the road to the driver like in the old hydronic steering feel. They make a stiffer steering wheel the “feedback” in corners and turns, but no road feel.

@@M5csbln The driving good, but not great. I got to try out the Comp with AWD, so I had more control I would say. I still feel it lacks that road feel like the F80 before it, but the G80 is better at putting the power to the road. So as for the driving: it is a step up for sure, but still missing what it lost from pre-F80 generations. Design wise: I abso-fucking-lutely hate it. The obnoxiously attention desperate and oversized Audi grill, the Dodge charger hood dents, the Mustang side profile, the Lexus taillights, the JDM "inspired" rear bumper and exhaust set up.... the only thing on the outside thats originally BMW is the badges. The engineers did a good job on this car, only to be screwed over by the design team.

I have owned my e92 m3 dct for 6 years now. I had a manual f80 m3 sedan for a year and sold it. I regret selling it, but I feel like the f80 could be sold, the e92 I can never let go of. If I could go back, I would've bought my e92 as a manual and my f80 as a dct. The g80 series I like, but I'm afraid it won't live up to my e92. For g80 money, I'd rather buy a 911 variant as the most logical progression for myself.

steering and feedback in G and F series was never even half as good as it is with the E cars. That's the biggest loss of BMW for me 😭

@@papa_pt yeah the steering was really night and day. I found myself driving in the heaviest f80 steering setting. It just felt heavy, not tactile

manual transmissions fit well sports cars but the coupe format is a compromise for practicality, anyway I think I would still choose the manual gb for more fun

I hate that manufacturers have removed the option of manual transmissions. Having only recently just started driving I'll have fewer and fewer options as I grow up. Cars like the Audi RS4 or BMW M5 that I'd love to one day own, forced to have Autos.

Also, the engine bay looks jank and generic as hell compared to the time and effort BMW usually puts into the bays of the M Cars. The square tube bracing looks particularly cheesy. What happened to the gorgeous carbon one in the F80/82?

I think the dramatically increased performance of the M-Lite models is an attempt to satisfy the luxury buyer who still wants to have all the performance so that they can make the full M cars properly rude. I bet the H-series is absolutely mental.

that should be the logic but just look at how sterile the M5 has become (minus the CS)
@vomErsten

@@papa_pt My thoughts on that are that the car is so big that people who want to thrash around a track are not going to choose it, so the whole trim range has to skew for comfort. Compare to the M3 and M4, which are pretty brutal this time around, especially the gearing on the 6MT.
