As an owner of an x3 m40i, i think it's fair to call these M cars. Are they diluting the brand a bit? Sure, but how many $80k, $120k, m3/m5s are really being sold these days? They had to compete with AMGs branding, and like your review shows, these are fully capable sport sedans, no real shame. Most reviewers even admit that these 'lite' Ms are a better buy for most of us - a good blend of practicality and spirited driving. The real Ms are still designed to be straight up halo track cars, which most don't really need or can take advantage of. Don't get me wrong, I miss the old days too with their simple lineups and understated sleeper styling, but BMW now has a car for almost every segement, niche, and style. If you want a sports sedan, they still make those, if you want a soccer mom or office hauler, they still make those, and if you want a blend of both, they make those too now. I think BMW hasn't 'lost' their way, they've just expanded to compete as a global car manufacturer, and are no longer some niche, enthusiast darling import car.

Having worked for BMW for the past 2 years, I've driven pretty much every car you can think of. I do feel to a degree that all of the modern cars begin to blend together a bit in terms of how they feel, however the M340 is a significant step up from the base 330, and manages to put a smile on my face whenever I drive one. At the end of the day though, the only car I truly truly adore to drive from their current lineup is the M2 CS, a proper sports car.

To any people looking to get the best driving experience out of an M340i, there are a few things to consider. 1. Tires. Most M340is are ordered for people not interested in high performance driving, so they opt for the basic Pirelli Cinturato run flats or P-Zero run flats. They’re skinny and better than other tires but not amazing. Opting for the Cooling and HPT package gets you PS4s and it is absolutely worth it. It corrects so much, and adds a more robust cooling setup. 2. Exhaust. 2020 M340i models have a loud M Sport exhaust system, but 2021 removes this in favor of a particulate filter, for emissions. Do your part and order your car with the optional M-Exhaust from the factory. This will not be offered by your sales person, but it’s $2000 and it sounds excellent. It’s loud and screams. 3. M-Suspension makes the car ride better in a variety of scenarios and is worth it if you can afford the extra $700. Most people who buy these cars do not get these options as they don’t care about them, but for those looking for an enthusiast experience these options are a must.

This is good advice, but damn is it annoying you have to spend ~4000 more just to make the car what it should be from the factory. I know the C43 is the same way, but at least where I am, almost all the c43s seem to be ordered optioned that way, whereas the m340s don’t.

Speaking of balance, In my 430i one time I accelerated a little too enthusiastically in 2nd gear around a sharp turn without TC and ended up doing a cute little drift. I don't drift or do donuts at all, but despite that I felt like I had full control of the car even when it kicked out, the rotation axis felt like it was directly underneath my bottom so I was easily able to counter steer and reel it back in.

Definitely glad to see BMW at least somewhat found their way back after the F30. I remember at the MAMA rally when Chris told you “don’t even drive” the 330i M-Sport, so I’m a little surprised to see you enjoy it as much as you did, honestly. Personally, I’d be tempted by some of the more off-the-beaten-path choices in this segment like the Giulia or the G70, but of the 3 German players, this would probably be my choice.

The straight 6 from BMW have always made a quality 6 cylinder! I had the 2.5 straight 6 back in my "new" 1985 325i! LOVED that car! Given the state of the at in modern vehicles these days, has the automakers simply decided that a hydraulic steering rack is no longer acceptable with the modern electrical steering systems at play? I kinda wished an automaker would put this option out here. I mean, I know they won't however, I wished it was so. The difference is simply amazing having driven a couple of different autos recently.

As an owner of a 2020 M340i (rwd) I think you were spot on with this review. My car came with 225/40/r19 all season tires and they were terrible at handling. After a few months of that I put 245/35/r19 Pilot Sport 4s (squared setup) and oh my gosh it is a different car. I will get aftermarket wheels soon so I can go a little wider in the back like 275ish as I am RWD with a Carbahn Stage 1 tune and I need all the traction I can get. I almost wish they didn't sell the m340 in RWD because the awd version is pretty rear biased and it helps fill the gap in some of the handling compared to the rwd. If anyone is thinking about getting this car I would definitely recommend it! Do your research between the 2020 MY vs the 2021 MY they are different in a couple of aspects.
@mnoovurvi
@mnoovurvi 3 жыл бұрын
They don't sell the RWD in europe and might be the only reason stopping me from getting one. I assume like all others until now RWD will give much better front-end feel as well, it's not just the grip. Also less weight and lower ride height.

I'm going to give BMW a compliment, something I have not done in years. They offer the M340i in RWD. That is impressive. RWD helps keep cost and weight down. It also means when the car gets to 65k miles, iDrive won't tell you xDrive is no longer functioning! Ask me how I know. Ok, it's a backhanded compliment, but considering the challenged reliability issues BMW is now known for, that ain't all bad.

Greetings from Frankfurt / Germany and thanks for the great video. I bought a M340i xdrive too and i am very happy with it. Before i had an S55 M2 Competition, but the engine sucks. So i decided to buy the B58 and first impression was "ummmmmm what have i done". But now i am so happy with it. It is a great car and of course it is not a real "M" but very similar and a great daily driver with lots of power. The S55 was a very high power "punch" engine, but always faulty and just in garage for repair. No fun and lots of money wasted. The B58 G20 M340i xdrive was the right decision. Spare parts are cheap, i bought 6 years warranty and service included to 200.000 km and an individual interior with fiona red leather. Really i just can recommend that car from the deep of my BMW heart. You will always love it, it is like a "tank" to me. Regards Tom

@hagbard.celine6737 3 жыл бұрын
@@TedwardDrives Sure, i bought the M2C S55 brandnew with 0km in 03 / 2019 and full perfomance carbon kits. And the first engine issues where after 10.000 km. The engine sounds like a rattle snake in lower rpm and i went to BMW garage immediatly. The service man told me, that they have to do some serious fixing of the engine and tooks nearly a week i got the car back. The car was fine to 18.200 km then it blowed up. I always drove it warm and cold and i always did everything as BMW wrote in the instructions. I did no engine tuning, the car was stock from factory, except all genuine BMW Perfomance carbon parts. Last day i owned it, the red engine light was burning and the engine sucks totally. I cant recommend it to buy, without any BMW warranty. And you will lose the BMW warranty immediatly if you just touch the engine or software, so be warned. The engine is 25K as spare part from BMW. My best friend owns an M3 with S55 and his turbos blowed up after 5000 km. So the quality is not what you expect from an M car. Thats just my personal experience with it, probably other people do not share my opinion. The experience to drive that car was amazing. Maybe the best BMW i've ever driven in my life. ( I am 50 years old). So i did a hard decision and sold the M2C back to BMW with 15K lost of money. I bought a brand new M340i xDrive with full individual paintjob and interior. As i told before, i was a bit sad about the performance and first impressions, but after 3 month driving i am happy now. So it was love at second choice. It is not a real M car. If you ever had and driven a real M sports car, there is nothing else. But the M340i is very close to a real M car. The B58 engine is probably the best six cylinder engine BMW ever made. So just my opinion and experience. Regards Tom

It's very interesting to me how BMW differentiates their m-sport products compared to their true M cars. In terms of straight line power, their turbo inline 6 variations are actually almost as fast as their M cars. It's impressive. The M cars are different only when you push it, and are mainly for people who will track the car often...or just want an M car. The M cars have stiffer suspension, better cooling, better brakes etc. So if you just want a fast car, their m-sport versions are the way to go. You won't really feel a difference 90% of the times.

Tedward: “B58 sounds better than S55” Equal Length S55: “Hold my beer :)” On a side note, I wonder about the longevity of these engines with people beating on them and BMW recommending 0W-20 🤔
@jaysefmacmanus8858
@jaysefmacmanus8858 3 жыл бұрын
Apparently, some of the modern 0w20's (VW 508.00 oils, for example) are robust enough to stand up to these high output engines. Perhaps its high moly content provides enough lubricity for the occasions when this thin oil does inevitably shear? IDK, I'm like you, and am curious to see the long term effects.
@alexb5166
@alexb5166 3 жыл бұрын
Jaysef MacManus yeah I’ve been hearing the same kinds of chatter. Personally I think it’s a lot of marketing cause fundamentally (to me), 0W-20 is just way too thin if engine temps are going to be pushed for extend periods (like performance driving). Of course the offset is that engine "consumables" like bearings may have been significantly improved so maybe it’s just not an issue. But who knows, in 5-10 years time I may be eating my words!

Brayon Moore that’s relatively young for a motor, don’t know and haven’t seen many that are pushing 100k+ yet. It will really be telling when the majority of motors are in the 100-200k range.

@jaysefmacmanus8858 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexb5166 I agree 100%. 5 years is enough for perhaps some obvious issues to reveal themselves, but not enough time to tell if the weight of an oil is allowing enough internal shear/wear to cause a concern. The B58 appears to be a fine engine, but time will reveal any inevitable flaws.

I've owned my loaded m340i and hellcat charger for some time now, my m340 has adaptive suspension the one you are driving doesn't it makes it even better... I drove a 2021 lci m5 competition yesterday thinking I could slim down to having 1 car that does everything and you just can't, m340i really sets an example but it needs more power to be everything for me.

Hate modern steering wheels. The 9 and 3 areas are effectively long flat blocks due to the buttons, making them impossible to grip. You drive by pushing against them with your palms, which gives less control and ultimately fatiguing.

Best thing you can do buying one of these off the lot is to replace the tires immediately. It's so sad that they saddled these "performance" cars with such terrible all season tires. The square skinny wheel setup doesn't help either for the xDrive models. My M340i was $66k and came with the Cinturatos A/S. At that price they should include Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+.

‘All’ does not go the way of the Model 3. I’ll start with just three ways it doesn’t. Build quality. Build quality. Build quality. Oh, and convenience, ride, handling and livability. And that engine, if you like the sound.
@fabriziom
@fabriziom 2 жыл бұрын
@@final_mile_music9713 I've owned BMW in the past and while their build quality is good it's not stunning. Handling? Model 3 is as good. Driving engagement? The bimmer is far better. Convenience? For me they're equal. Soundwise? The inline 6 is classical music and rock'n'roll all at once. Nothing an electric would do. But as i live in Europe and it costs me a fifth to run a Tesla vs. the bimmer, and it's also sensibly cheaper, I go with the Tesla. If I want good vibes, I crank my 2000 WJ grand Cherokee V8....
