I actually love this, as someone with a solidly middle class income I don't necessarily have the means to ever own and maintain something like a G Wagon or original Defender in good condition. On the other hand, one of these on the used market should be well within budget in just a matter of years, with a highly dependable and simple to maintain power train. Looks like I might be living out my Euro overlanding dreams after all!

I have been waiting for this review! You have done a nice job summing the vehicle up and dispelling some of negative comments around the steering. You can adjust the steering bump stops by swapping nut spacer with a pair of SAE washers and improve turning radius by six feet. However the Magna Steyr design was this way was to protect truck with front lockers engaged. I don't really have an issue coming from a Chevy Tahoe having to K turn in parking spaces, plus turn earlier with 3 and 3/4 spins peg to peg.

The Road Sign Assistance whinging when you go even slightly over the speed limit, is indeed an EU regulation. It's on every new car over here and it SUCKS. I have no idea how in the world have I thought of it being a Smart or a Fiat 500 when I saw the wheel on the thumbnail, especially that I have never paid any attention to these in the past, but I have just looked them up in Google search and they do not look like this, and yet I was not wrong for associating Smart with it apparently. I really, really like this one. For whatever reason I get the feeling that this sort of interior will be a hot selling point 10-15 years from now, I feel that people will be looking for modern cars with more analog feel way more often than they do now. I think it looks fantastic, the only thing that slightly bothers me is that the steering wheel position and that tiny dash make for a perfect place to put a tiny digital speedo there and maybe that rev counter too. It slightly bothers me these two things are displayed on the center screen instead. Other than that - fantastic. Now, I do not really know the "utility SUV" (or however you wanna call them) market, yet alone US car market, but to me it feels like ballpark of $80k would be a more suitable price. One more thing I will say though is that I think this engine suits the car perfectly, it sounds appropriate.

Honestly if it was just me, I'd tune it because the engine is an absolute beast but I got outvoted by family. And the funny thing is - now the G-Wagon has shamelessly copied BMW's B58 and is now coming with a - you guessed it - a 3.0L turbo straight six! If you want the "bi-turbo V8" , you have to upgrade to the superpremium AMG version. One thing I will say , though, paid for a Premium audio system, they have better options at Walmart.

My favorite thing about this car isn't even about this car. When Doug DeMuro did his video on it, he made a comment about there being too many switches and parroting the "Consumers don't actually know what they want" thing and just about every comment on that video said "No, this is perfect actually". It was either god-tier engagement bait or the best example of not understanding your audience i've ever seen. I'm not sure which, but i'm impressed equally by either outcome Anyway, this is one of the vehicles of all time. Not nostalgic about Defenders of yore, but i appreciate getting just about as close to a "switch per function" design philosophy as you legally can in a country that requires all cars to have backup cameras to meet safety regulations but won't let you use cameras as your only rear view mirrors.

The manual headlight leveling does surprise me a bit. That’s only a thing with Halogene lights usually.. Xenon have to have automatic leveling by law. And I thought LEDs too. (I have a car with LED headlights since summer, and it has auto leveling and cornering light.) Yes the „assistants“ being to annoying is a EU regulation. (All new cars sold have that shit as mandatory because the regulators think this would make driving safer. I can say from personal experience that in my case it’s the opposite.) A few years ago, before the Grenadiers were ready to be sold I had one of the test drivers on a twisty mountain road in front of me. He was going quite fast even through the corners. Way faster than I would have thought he could. (Sure thanks to the car I was driving I could have gone faster still, but for the type of vehicle the Grenadier is, the tires and the center of gravity, his pace was kind of surprisingly high. I think you americans would describe his pace as „he was hauling a$$“. ;-) He would have left most normal driving cars up that road way behind if there would have been any besides us two. (I live near the Magna facilities where the Grenadier was developed and the G-Wagon is built. So I came across a few of the prototypes of either over the years.)

11:07 - Yes, it's a really annoying EU regulation that every single new built car has to meet since mid 2024. Some cars like Ford or BMW actually give you a shortcut right from the factory where you need to press and hold down the LIM button of the cruise control to deactivate but still....this is getting very damn annoying. Every single time you're boarding a new car and don't want to get annoyed by it, you'll have to deactivate the speed limit warning, auto start/stop and the active lane keeping assist over and over and over again. I'd rather stick to older cars as long as possible.

I've seen a few of these and have been wondering about them a bit. Not my kind of vehicle, but I really like it. The steering is appropriate for what it is, too. I like vehicles where everything is matched up to its purpose, rather than being heavily compromised masters of nothing. I like sports cars to be sports cars, luxury cars to be luxury cars, and trucks to be trucks. I love the manual roof panels. I can't tell if they lift out, but if so, they remind me of the Subaru BRAT "Funroofs", though those opened like gullwings. I miss the manual operation roof panels from my old cars and much prefer them to the power moonroofs. While I never had any issues with either kind of roof, to me, the manual removable panel gives more of a sense of occasion to operate. And, yes, the speed warning is a stupid EU regulation.

This is especially true when the annual household income is $80k in the United States and new vehicle interest rates are over 6%. Hopefully auto-manufacturers will start to realize the innovation we want is in bang for buck, not just jamming in tech and jacking up prices.
