Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable... but will the outcome always be good? I guess that will depend on how we approach it. These past few months, I was challenged many times, but more often than not, didn't I try to keep morality in mind, knowing that my actions didn't have to harm others? Time and time again, didn't I resist the urge to abuse power and resources simply to achieve my goals more swiftly? In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

@alyssiabride72606 жыл бұрын
Or maybe some people are afraid of AI because they have enough knowledge about it they know there is something to be afraid of. There are a lot of people developing and advancing this technology who know this and want to slow down the progress a little until things can be analyzed more and outcomes and long terms effects are better understood. Then there are people who either aren't looking at the big picture, basically refusing to see the negative side of this technology or are seeing it and are just ignoring them. It is because of those people that I have many concerns. I am not afraid of AI itself, I am afraid of the radical ideas and concepts those people are planning to use it for. When AI starts "thinking" of humans as useless beings there will be problems. The level of intelligence between AI and humans is going to be significant. We will have to have a Neurolink implant shot through our skull into our brain so we can "plug in" to the internet so we can keep up. Once this what it means to be human will change forever. That is a concern for me and I would have thought it would have been for every human being alive, but I guess not. Once these changes happen, there is no going back, so why not proceed with a little caution.

Transhumanism, like many other ideas/ideologies, CAN work _if_ carried out properly. 1: We _MUST_ be able to feel emotions if we are ever "upgraded", as life would become truly _meaningless_ without them. Why live if we can't feel joy, love, compassion, or amazement? Why survive if we can't enjoy or bask in the beauties and ecstasies of life and be mystified and awe-struck by the vastness of the universe? 2: *_MAKE SURE_* that we know *_ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING_* there is to know about the manufacturers of these new technologies and the governments that are in control of them, not knowing *_EVERY SECRET THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT THEM_* can lead to them manipulating, exploiting, and even controlling the masses, leading us to our destruction, or at least majorly holding us back from a bright and wonderful future. 3: *_WE MUST_* make sure our future selves bare a *_STRIKING_* resemblance to modern day humans, atleast in form (minus genitalia, as it's made for reproduction/intercourse and isn't exactly a pretty body part), the Human form is beautiful, and ridding ourselves of such a masterpiece for something that doesn't capture THE same kind of visual beauty would be absolutely _disgraceful_ and would damage our sense of love and compassion. *If these rules are followed, than Mankind is on it's way to perfection and Godhood! We will achieve **_true_** paradise, we will finally find a literal heaven on earth!*

Can me anti-progress, but there is something deeply unsettling about this. Programmed nanoparticles in the bloodstream? The ability to scour or implant memories? I appreciate the medical potential of a pill that can specifically target a cancerous tumor, or the agricultural applications of a 'smart pesticide' that can eliminate all competition to the crop, but where do we draw the line? Would any of you seriously consider 'uploading your consciousness' to the internet (thank you, Transcendence), or artificially delaying death for hundreds - even thousands - of years? And what about the people who do not have the ability to critically assess these technologies, and just mindlessly buy into them? We already have a culture in which the new smartphone or gadget is lapped up by the programmed 'consumer' masses - is it really a strech to imagine that in a matter of decades, most people will be physically and psychologically dependent upon these technologies? The enhanced office worker could go for days without sleep. The augmented soldier could be stronger, more deadly and more merciless than ever before. The future psychologist could scan your moods in real time, and know your innermost thoughts and desires. Would human relationships as we know them become a thing of the past, if virtual partners could be specified to our exact needs? Would we even need to exercise, if the right diet of pills could keep us toned and healthy? A trip to the beach, or a walk in the woods may only require a headset or brain implant. People already spend a good proportion of their lives in virtual worlds (video games, movies) - is this really so far-fetched? I would argue that these things will make us less, not more human. Deeply troubling.
@nexus688610 жыл бұрын
You should watch Ghost in the Shell 1995 (as far as uploading consciences go) if you actually want a proper depiction of what it may very well look like. Transcendence is a piece of half baked garbage and if that's where you take your "examples" from, no wonder you pose that question expecting nobody to answer "yes". I would very likely upload my consciousness if that gave me a chance to either become part of a bigger, more intelligent collective, or download myself into another body and continue learning about this amazing and vast universe. "Virtual experiences, dreams, all data that exists is both reality and fantasy. Whichever it is, the data a person collects in a lifetime is a tiny bit compared to the whole." I see the loss of life and information, accumulated during the span of a lifetime, as a horrible thing. And if humanity could somehow find away to preserve that knowledge along with retaining individuality, then I would argue that would make us much, much more than human. Not "less".
@BlackSailPass_GuitarCovers10 жыл бұрын
Shuriken Shep Thanks for your reply, i'll check out the film. I do not deny that there would be benefits to this kind of technology (the advances in medicine would be huge), but I fear the dangers that I mentioned in my first comment will outweigh them.

I would consider uploading my consciousness at an old age assuming we could simulate our bodies and environment down to the molecular level. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a programmer and science fiction fan but I think consciousness could in theory be transferred one day through the gradual transition of physical neurons to digital neurons.

What I personally am more concerned about is how intrusive modern technology has become on everyday life. With all of our smartphones, I-Pods, laptops, and other electronics I can't help but feel that the current progression that our society has taken inhibits social interaction and the forming of healthy human relationships. I live in a house where the kids are almost always more focused on the Internet or TV than what's going on around them, and I feel that what's more important above all else is developing technology in a way that allows live to become easier and more able to access human potential while simultaneously allowing for greater social interaction and a much quieter, less intrusive civilization, somewhat like it was in the early 20th century, except with all the benefits of modern medicine and transportation, among other things. I wonder if the transhuman revolution will be able to successfully resolve these issues?

"A new, beautiful age for humanity is coming". Maybe. "Those who deny such benefits have the freedom to do so, for all have the right to their own culture and belief system". Well, just think of what happenend to hunter-gatherers when early agricultural societies started to develop. Techological progress is not always that inclusive. "However, those who accept it will become equal to, or perhaps stronger than the fictional Gods of ancient human myth". Again, maybe. But, then again, think of your first sentence.
