Lizzie dissects the wellness industrial complex and reframes health holistically. Lizzie Braicks-Rinker is a well-rounded wellness enthusiast. With certifications in pilates, fitness, and health coaching, she is passionate about helping others navigate the modern world with less stress and anxiety.
Lizzie competed as a D1 rower in college until losing her mom to colon cancer. After losing her mom, Lizzie wanted to understand how to nourish herself spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. She's since become a passionate advocate for understanding wellness on a holistic level. The core of her work centers around learning how to listen to what our bodies and brains truly need, and to tune out toxic messaging that we receive around food, exercise, and body image.
She believes that being healthy is about more than just exercising - that it is also about feeding your soul with the things you love and having a healthy approach to life's challenges. Lizzie currently lives with her family and dogs in Seattle, WA. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I recommend people picking up the book by Gabor Mate “when the body says no”. Many times we are not listening to the body or taking care of traumas that are impacting us. The body does not forget what has occurred to you and this can lead to a variety of chronic illnesses.

She is so right in what she says and points out in this talk. I realised lately that being in physically good shape is only part of being able to feel good. My mental state is struggling and there is no joy almost in anything. Without being 'healthy' mentally, it is impossible to be 'healthy' and content with myself and the world and the fact that we are here for only a short time.

Speaking of feeling good instead of looking good is way better, feeling good that is…I found out I had scoliosis after I was hurt on the job picking up something way to heavy with another woman when it should of been 2 men. Anyway I had no operation like everyone thought I should, and now 32 years later I still look bad with a huge bow on the left side of my back but I feel good only because I made myself the last 6 years start to exercise and get my strength back and went back to work! I’d rather look bad and feel good than look good and feel bad!! 🌹

As someone who lost my dad to a sudden fatal illness, I felt for her and the ways that she shared about her mom. This is such a brave presentation and such a wonderful message. You really do understand health/wellness in a different way when you watch someone you love take their last breaths. Holistic wellness is so so so important!

Thanks… helpful… I’ve been struggling with an autoimmune disease and feeling like it’s my fault for not having the willpower to eat less inflammatory, exercise, sleep more etc but the truth is I had two babies in three years, have moved houses across the country, and changed jobs several times and all in lots of hardship. I bet my autoimmune disease is absolutely from stress, lack of sleep, inflammation… but life ebbs and flows… I’m hopefully my best version of wellness is now and always in just letting things be. I love health and wellness and it’s part of who I am so it’ll balance at some point I’m sure.

Honestly! Thank you! I am turning 50 this year and I am just beginning to come home to myself. Thanks for the confirmation and the access to see myself as well and that my environment has to pull for that too. I am more inspired by this and now I am going to delete all the yoga instructors I am following wishing I could morph my 50 year old body back to it’s 20something shape. I honestly like my body the way it is and I just want to get stronger as I grow older and also have all the other parts of my life working.

It is interesting to watch this video few days after I watched a different one about how sport can cure mental illness. There is also listening to your body and (not) listening to your mind. Some people struggle to distinguish these two, me included sometimes. I think exercising is very important and very helpful and there is nothing wrong with it being a major part of your life. If my mind tells me "I don't feel like doing it today" I ignore it, cause my brain has tendency to 1. be lazy 2. overthink. However, if my body tells me (through physical symptoms) "I'm tired and need rest" - I listen. I fully agree about being compassionate though. Toward yourself and others. If you or someone else decides to eat pizza instead of some lentil veggie bowl for dinner, don't beat yourself up/judge. We need balance, we need rest from 'perfection', or we need sth bad to remind us how good feels like.

Ohh, can I relate to that experience! Lost my mom too, she was in her mid 70’s but I was literally rt by her side when she took her very last breath too. I felt like I was watching her in a horror movie the way her eyes looked & her mouth wide open. This creeped me out! I’m the youngest in the family as well. Now I’m in my 60’s! Yikes. It’s really hard to believe that I’m at that age/stage. Re: health that’s something I need help with.

When she tells about who definition of healthy she lies, because it is considering physical and emotional well-being. So she just think she knows some secret and she reveal it to us. Well, it's not like that. Simply telling: she says that she was depressed because she focused merely on results, not her, she wasn't fully present in her body, that backfired adres some accident, when she had no choice, but to get herself together.

Lizzie is telling us what society has drummed into our heads and she's right. But you have to realize your a miracle! That's right a miracle: you started with 2 cells and now your 37 trillion cells, amazing! But in really all you really know is what society, and your brain and eyes tell you when you look in the mirror. So, what's the answer? Curiosity and enlightenment. Go on the web and start looking and understanding how God made you a miracle, and as your curiosity drives you to learn more and more you will marvel at the miracle you are, and your brain and body will go hand in hand as you understand your a 10. But curiosity and diligence is the only way to uncover the truth about how miraculous you are. Good luck, think positive and be happy as you enjoy your adventure as you become an explorer and discover the true you.

While I am happy that this person figured it out for themselves and realised that an unorganised plant based diet wasn’t for them, I must say that there is no such a thing as “hardcore vegan”. There is vegan or non-vegan. You can’t be 110% or %80 vegan. Veganism is an ethical stance against something happening in our world. Whether or not you agree with the stance is not the point here. But the fact that you couldn’t nourish yourself in a plant based diet is just your fault not the diet’s.

This is a great excuse for anybody who tries to eat better and not hurt animals...."Just do what you feel like, assuming your body needs it... And then do what you want, because it makes you feel better"🙈 I am actually quite dissapointed, I was hoping by the title to learn about what the body tells you by certain symptoms etc. I feel sorry for her and her mother, but there is nothing new in this talk nor anything helpful. In the end, her "healthy" Mom died from cancer and she herself wasn't happy as long as she was vegan?!? Seriously. I get what she was trying to say, but in society we already have the exact problem...ppl just do what they feel like and that is exactly what their health looks like, I see that every day working in the ICU. Not fun. When you love your body, you take care of yourself HAPPILY and make good choices with joy and then that is what makes you feel good. Wish she had understood that before the talk.

I agree. You can be vegan AND get the right nutrients, she obviously didn't eat the right things. Even my B12 is good without taking supplements. And if it doesn't taste nice it just means it hasn't been prepared well. There is so much recent research that shows plant-based food is better for your gut and therefore your body and your brain - as well as for the planet. No-brainer, really.
