I've always wondered the absolutely miserable sales skills of so many appliance store clerks. Why on earth would I be interested in knowing the exact rpm of a washing machine, when all I want are clean sheets? Why would I care about the energy consuption of a vacuum cleaner, when I use it once a week for 20 minutes? I don't know how much 85 dB of noise is, I just don't want it to annoy me and/or the baby to wake up. Just make the item work, make me understand why I need it and take my money.

This does nothing to answer the question in the title... Why is the word value automatically associated with money? perhaps this is why we are failing ourselves, and this planet- because the value which we perceive to be inherent in things is always monetary. why don't people see that there is other kinds of value in things beyond how they can individually profit from them?

He's speaking in generalities, but the summation is that value is generalized, in common practice, with the use of metrics that are generated from the desire to reduce spending and thus save money... typically in bite size chunks, without truly looking at the product as a whole and realize that the very thing that you are cutting up to save a buck or two, diminishes the inherent value of said thing. So, when he states that they sped up the trains and took out the tables to make more room to cram more people on the train... From a purely numbers perspective it makes sense. But when you do this, you are actually tearing out the very things that actually give specific value to the train ride - hence the slower pace and table offer the ability to use a mobile office and actually utilize the time wasted if you drove a car, etc. So therefore, value is not merely numerical as most would assume.

It's basically a talk on psychology and it's economic implementation. Ogilvy and Rory are related to business, hence money.
