Capt. Marquet was my 1st Commanding Officer as a Submariner on board the USS Santa Fe. Capt. Marquet left a great impression on me at that time in my life. After viewing the video I realized Capt. Marquet directed me to take control of myself. That's what I did in June of 2003. I seperated from the NAVY and continued serving as a Police Officer in the state of New Jersey.I want to thank Capt. Marquet for being what a commander should be.

David, Your book is spot on and reflective of my own leadership journey to realize how to lead leaders 10 years ago. The core message you share reminds me of one of my favorite leadership quotes, "In order to gain ultimate power, you must give up control. When you give up control, you conquer your own fears". Sail onward and continue to shape our world. Tony Marolt

Hi David, I frequently refer Leaders I work with to your Ted Talk when they have established a demand, control and fear based team dynamic. Thank you for this terrific resources and I love your guts and courage. Regards Tony

That's a clear instruction, - the most capable people in the most appropriate placement backed by the best at accepting responsibility. Not many people have the (leadership) ability to convey the action behind the words, and that's the failure of personalized instruction, by naming without explaining or sharing knowledge.

I'm just about finished with 'Turn The Ship Around'. I'm getting ready to hand it over to my girlfriend who I know can immediately benefit from it :) Thank you for spreading this knowledge and truly revolutionizing the way leaders, "lead". *****

So good that other Ted talkers refer to this one. Simon Sinek for example. Good stuff.

Reminds me of when the CSAF declared “empower the squadrons”, since then many additional duties have disappeared and troops feel more empowered

In Middle Eastern countries, people who do not know the alphabet and cannot put signature when they receive ballot paper, they just put their finger marks.

Doesn't "I intend to do X..." phrase ask for a permission?
@untiedshoos117 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Concerning what David is talking about, the term "I intend to..." means exactly that. the intent is to drive the person to think ahead of time - in the submarine Navy (having served 26 years in them, I'm slightly well versed), the NORM is "request permission to..." and that stifles critical thinking. I've been privy to work for a great submarine captain (not David, unfortunately) who used this principle - it works amazingly well. Folks who you would think have no ability to think, actually devise solutions, better ways to tackle issues, and they walk with pride of ownership.
