Mmmmmmm, very interesting. An eye-opening and thought-provoking talk. I particularly liked the example of the smokeless cook stove in Tanzania, which turned out to be a failure because it wasn't adapted to the villagers' lifestyle and did not take into account certain aspects of their culture. It often happens that we assume we know what others want - which might be tha case sometimes, but which sometimes is not. This reminds me of a story I read not long ago in a book on the subject of a branch of psychology called non-violent communication, in which two sisters are fighting over an orange ; their father gets annoyed at them arguing, takes a knife and cuts the orange in half, sure that it was the best solution, which it wasn't for the simple reason that he didn't ask his daughters exactly why they were have this spat (in fact, one daughter wanted the juice of the orange to make a drink whereas the other one wanted the pulp to put in a cake, so cutting the orange in two in reality solved nothing at all). ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
