About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

you hit it right there in the ticker mate. i have many of disabled friends with musical talent and they are just amazing, but unlike most of them, there are a few that want to mix with the 'normal' people. but how far can you say, on wich pont is a man/woman normal? everyone has their problems and disabilities. diversity has been all around us all the time, for everyone has his/hers inperfections.

"Clarence Adoo, for example, who used to play trumpet with Courtney Pine, suffered a devastating car accident in 1995 and is now paralysed from the shoulders down. He plays music on a laptop, using a specially designed blow tube as a computer mouse. Lyn Levett has severe cerebral palsy and can only communicate by pressing an iPad with her nose, yet makes the "most dizzyingly brilliant electronic music", says Hazlewood."

That's the beauty of music for you! What I really love about those involved in the music industry are how passionate they are about the subject; they REALLY love what they are doing and want to share it with the world. Not to mention the fact that he has such a noble cause, too!

They're electronic instruments. I forgot the names, but they're extremely unique in both timbre and playing style, as they were meant to be played by those with specific conditions.

Nothing was said about new works (although there are a lot). But to imply that orchestras will not be in the future is silly, and straight up incorrect. Comparing orchestral music to hip-hop/electronic/whatever is sort of like comparing War and Peace to Get Fuzzy comics. Yeah, I love Get Fuzzy, but it will never be as deep and rewarding as something like War and Peace, regardless of if W+P is from the 1800s. This is coming from someone who listens to and enjoys literally every type of music

yeah sure, there are orchestral works that represent some of the highest points in human creativity, but just because they will be around in the future doesnt mean they will be 'the music of the future' seeing symphonies is not exactly a major part of our culture anymore, it just isnt.

why have a paraorchestra? Would't that just create segregation? In my opinion it's better to have diversity in anything related to people.
@ButterflySeraph612

The paraorchestra is not necessarily excluding able-bodied people; after all, the founder himself is of an able body. The sad thing about the classical music industry (or other music genres for the matter) is that there aren't a lot of people from minority groups; the main groups that are the core of their industries weren't diverse in the first place, and it will take a long time for change to come about. The point of the paraorchestra is to prove that the disabled (and other minority groups, as the paraorchestra has grown to include disabled people from all kinds of backgrounds) can be a part of the music industry in the first place. They're pioneering the first steps in hopefully having disabled people be part of the mainstream orchestras. Remembering what Hazlewood said at the beginning of the talk? He mentioned the Paralympics, arguably the largest event for disabled athletes. Does that mean that there is segregation? Not necessarily; after all, we have several Paralympians who have gone to compete in the Olympics. The point of the Paralympics is to shine to spotlight on people who might otherwise never get the chance. That is the same case with the British Paraorchestra. Phew, that was quite a bit! I know you probably forgot about this video; it's quite old. That said, I just wanted to answer your question from the point of view of a classical musician who has worked and made friends with several of our disabled populations. Hopefully, I was able to answer your question.

re: get fuzzy comics. That is just so ignorant omg, of course hip-hop/electronic/whatever as you call it can be as rewarding as war and peace, just because it hasnt been academically canonised and stigmatised, i don't even

All of these comments on this video are pretty old, but I'm responding to them anyway! Nowadays, academic studies into other genres of music are amazingly common. They're even youtube channels about these topics! Check out 12Tone: the guy is an academic musician! He even recently posted a video about exactly what academic musicians do, and it's extremely diverse
