I forget where I first heard it, but the best quote I've heard regarding arguments versus debates is as follows: "An argument is an attempt to force your opinion onto others, at the expense of denying their viewpoints as valid. A debate is a reasoned discussion between like minds of differing opinion." To engage in an argument is to have already lost the intellectual discourse. By denying outside information, no matter how factual it may be, you are lessening your own intellectual capabilities. But to have a true debate with somebody is to truly think about the world around you. It is to potentially enrich yourself by realizing that maybe you don't, in fact, have all the information, and it leaves you open to new ideas.

How sad is it that his parents had to explain racism to him as a child? Racism is the stupidest thing about us as human beings. "How can you hate me when you don't even know me?" This man is so incredibly brave, he could have been murdered!
@coryanntopanga3 жыл бұрын
It's very heartbreaking. As someone with a wyt father and blk mother, I had to have the ugliness of racism explained to me when I was 5 years old... and I still didn't get it. I was too young to grasp the concept of hate in any meaningful capacity. It came after an incident with my parents in a small Texas town they both grew up in. My first experience of hate came from a blk guy that called my blk mother a bed we/nch for being married to my wyt father. I didn't understand that term, but somehow it made me feel sad and scared... and it upset my mother. I'd never seen my dad so furious to the point where he was ready to fight this guy. My mother stopped him and told him something that made him calm down. I don't know what it was or maybe I just don't remember. I do remember my mother crying later and both of them sitting me and my little brother down to explain as best they could. My baby brother didn't get it at all and was more interested in playing so they let him toddle off. Lol Even though I was a little older than him, I still didn't quite get it. I just remember how awful it made me feel. No child should have the ignorance and fear of adults slammed down onto them- not ever. Those tiny little shoulders aren't built to carry that kind of weight. It changed me and put a small blight on what had been the clean slate of my childhood. I'll always remember how bad I felt. Forgive me for rambling on. Lol 🙏
@Jessa-RM3 жыл бұрын
@@coryanntopanga please don't apologize, that was beautifully said and from the bottom of my heart I'm sorry you had to go through that. Nothing is more upsetting, aside from maybe institutional racism than children having to deal with racism at such a young age. I remember reading that studies show that children internalize the racism and hatred they see and it affects them in some really serious ways, like you said, it's too great a burden for such small shoulders.

All children that experience racism are taught it at a young age (if family are aware) I was taught what racism was i primary school, where I got bullied based on skin colour. @pyukumuku-66453 жыл бұрын
@@NCMETAL yeah, but to play the devil's advocate, he never really wanted to end slavery. He only did it as a military strategy to win the Civil War. As a northern Republican, he supported the free soil movement, which was that he didn't want slavery to expand to the West (it was still being settled), BUT he didn't mind keeping slavery in the South. This was for economic reasons; if slavery spread to the west, then there would be whites competing for jobs with blacks. He was NOT an abolitionist (someone who wanted to end the institution of slavery as a whole). During the Civil War, he decided that for the Union to win, they needed to escalate the purpose of the war from re-uniting the union to now being about the abolishing of slavery. With the passing of the emancipation proclamation, it meant that the Confederacy could no longer get aid from Britain like it had planned because the British had just emancipated their own slaves and it would look bad for them to help maintain slavery over here. And, it meant that many of the freed slaves in the south would join the Union army and reduce the population of the South. The Emancipation Proclamation ONLY freed slaves in the confederacy. The border states still kept slavery because Lincoln wanted to keep them appeased so they didn't break off too. The 13th amendment that abolished slavery everywhere was only made after the war once victory was secured. TLDR; It was all a military strategy.

@100yoav100 I get the general idea of coming together in forgiveness because we know that racism is bad, but I feel like that then gets used to shut down people trying to get full equality (especially because racism doesn’t come from “hate”, but from unequal power structures). We should all come together in peace in love, but we should be patting each other on the back just yet.

Also Abraham Lincoln: Got 625,000 to 680,000 of his own people killed in the most destructive war America ever had, even as he jailed journalists and performed other rights violations. All to accomplish something that all the other nations performed without killing a significant percentage of their population. When you study Abraham Lincoln, you'll find several of examples of him making very eloquent speeches full of beautiful advice that he himself did not put into practice.

Dwight House Sir... My childhood is now disturbed and my day is ruined. I never said he was a good guy. He looked cool and had a nice name. That’s all I cared about. Thank you for crushing my lovely dreams. For I no longer am as innocent as I once was. (Nice history lesson though, something the schools would like to keep from us)

What he wrote could have come off of any of a thousand Civil War threads when someone with southern ties looks for and reads/hears only what will "expose" all the "bad" that AL did. The problem is a lot of racists wouldn't give you the time of day to just sit down and talk. So much easier to yell obscenities and threaten you than to just use their words. This video was extremely powerful, a great watch and listen, but the odds of something like this happening are just so slim. I'm not saying it isn't worth trying to do because it most definitely is, but this being the outcome is highly unlikely and that saddens me.

This is how Democrats and Republicans in the US need to talk. Not by name-calling each other as they do.
@amazingcalvin4 жыл бұрын
Sadly this is not possible at least in a democracy where people do nothing but vote. The elected president does not have much accountability for his actions other than just being voted out after 4 years. If both parties come together, talk out their differences and in general resolve their open conflict, then they would have to actually work and do some good for the people. They are not interested in that so whether by using genuine hatred or fake, both parties continue to oppose everything the other does or says. This way, all Americans will come to expect literally nothing from any president from any party which is in the best interests of both parties.
@schizophrenicenthusiast4 жыл бұрын
@@amazingcalvin I believe the parties don't come together because their supporting crowds won't come together. People on one side view the others as criminals. If the people would unite then both parties would lose all their support in favor of a hybrid set of ideologies (because let's face it, both sides have some good ideas) but that doesn't happen because once the people learn about the Democrats vs Republics war, they immediately side with one in order to eliminate the other. Some critical thinking would be useful at that point.
