TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

Kimber Lybbert is National Board-certified teacher at Moses Lake High school, and her students keep telling her to write a book or give a TED talk. This year, her students argumentative research projects answer the question: What is it like to be a member of the class of 2020? Topics range from the lack of mental health counseling to the emerging mercantile nature of teen sexuality. Their stories reach down inside your core, draw the contents of your chest up through your sinus cavity, and lodge the debris somewhere behind your prefrontal cortex. They are beautiful and powerful and broken and patched together in ways that allow the best light of humanity to shine through them. In her talk she urges everyone to see the strength and potential in our young people. I am a National Board-certified teacher at Moses Lake High school, and my students keep telling me I need to write a book or give a TED talk. I don’t think this is because of who I am, but because of who they are. This year, their argumentative research projects answer the question: What is it like to be a member of the class of 2020? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

On the contrary, I think it is precisely because older generations view us as a byproduct of whatever mistakes they made, it's hard for them to entirely let go of the responsibility they have of raising and shaping us. It's like how writers continually criticize their own work, except the line between WIP and publication is hella blurred.

Every Google Slides presentation, or other online presentation app that is sent to a teacher, put a link to this video. Or if your parents want to see how you did, put the link on several different pages, they will be interested in what it is and why. Or even if you have a typed essay, put the link on there, then if you must, you can delete it before submitting it. I want to send this to everyone, but I am lucky to have very nice parents along with all the other kids I associate with, but still sometimes (even though it’s often rare) they doubt me or tell me about how I can do better even thought I got a B or a low A on assignments and tests. I’m not sure what my friends parents would think of this, so I would leave it up to their kids to show them, and I will show my own if I feel it’s needed. I turned 16 on February 9th and I consider to be very lucky to have as good of parents as I do, but I would definitely love for them to see my side more. I want this to be recommended to everyone like Markiplier’s Meow was not too long ago.

Been working in construction for the past 3 summer's full time and I'm 17 right now. One of the new guys on the crew has been treating me like I'm worthless while doing insulation which I've never done. Started putting me and my other coworker down and said the other three on the crew would make so much more money if it was them three. Yet were the ones learning and lifting beams for you. This quote is perfect for the scenario and I might mention it to him bc it really made me want to quit after 3 summers of breaking my back for someone to say I'm not giving my part in the company bc I haven't learned how to do one thing in which I could be taught?? Sucked. I stepped on a nail yesterday and worked all week with a sprained back and neck and it pisses me off I'm ruining my body for money that goes away so fast.

Someone who drowns in 3 feet of water is just as dead as someone who drowns in 20. Just because you believe your problems are worse than someone else's, doesn't make their pain go away. Something my mom always said was, If everyone threw their problems in a pile, you would want to take yours back. You have no idea the daily struggle that people go through. Just because you go to work everyday, does not make me going to school any easier. Just because you have pay the bills, doesn't mean my math homework gets easier. I try to have a conversation, see your side of the argument and you tell me I'm talking back. Of course I'm talking back, that's how conversations work. All I ask is to be sincerely listened to, and I would give the same respect back. Respect is earned not granted to all whom are older than me.

Teenagers are treated like adults without the freedoms. Maybe that’s why so many adults act like teenagers. I’m tired of all these stereotypes that all teenagers are just depressed screenaholics with greasy hair and faces that thrive of off rebellion and controversy. We are NOT all like that; in fact, that’s probably less than one percent of teens. And there are adults like that too! So stop acting like it. ‘I’m older and smarter than you.’ ‘I don’t want to hear your opinion.’ ‘Don’t give me attitude or I’ll take away your phone, because that’s CLEARLY all that matters to you.’ Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with widespread and easily accessible tech, with phones and iPads and AirPods. This is gonna sound stereotypical, but most adults DON’T understand and don’t make efforts to. We promote not treating people differently if they’re old, but what about young people? Why are you all so surprised that we reject the world when the world rejects us? Why do you teach us to not listen to stereotypes if that’s all you treat us as? Why is any concern we raise invalidated due to our youth and treated like nothing? Why do you teach the future keepers of the world that our entire personality can be summarized into one eight letter word that I now despise? ‘Ugh. T-E-E-N-A-G-E-R-S.’

I purposely shut off my ability to cry for years because I thought crying and any sensitivity was a sign of weakness and had to be hidden and bottled up. I cried in front of my mum for the first time in years this year and I think it scared her to remember that I had feelings aha. I'm so glad our generation invites conversation about feelings and mental health because we have learned from past generations that trying to seem tough all the time only makes you hard on the outside and is not cathartic.

I would also like to point out that America has a very sick obsession with competition. And social Darwinism. Teen suicide is a very real problem just as much is teen substance abuse yet America still adheres to its fanatical obsession with survival of the fittest yet scratches its collective head when kids shoot up their classmates or hang themselves in closets or become alcoholics before they are even of legal age to drink.

"an idea should not be invalidated by the age of its creator." inverse of "authority" argument... which states that an idea should not be validated by any quality, other than the idea itself. consider that the next time you want to use the phrase "all scientists agree," in any context. which is not nearly as often the case as it might seem, as data requires interpretation. perhaps it isnt so much "the age" of the person, but that those who lack experience have such a high tendency to be wrong. this projection of sorts, seems to me, to be just as much of a parenting issue as anything. personally, i was never treated like this particular factor was reason i wasnt being agreed with... and this is an important distinction to make. disagreement is not invalidation. fortunately for me, my parents had no issues explaining to me why they thought what they did and i was taught to ask question and not to be afraid what people think. i force people to explain themselves so that i understand them and can properly judge if it makes sense to me. i was never that one who rebelled against the opinions of the more experienced "because" i felt misunderstood. afterall, theyve been there and are more often than not, in my experience, trying to help. this isnt entirely altruistic, and should therefore necessarily be considered with suspicion, however, you should always consider the motivations of others... emotionally, helping the younglings in this way, can feel like a sort of reconciliation with choices they regret. its ok to be disagreeable. its not ok to force others to agree with you.

Coming from a millennial who's been wading through the fire for a while now, it doesn't get easier. However that doesn't mean you should stop trying. Our Generations were fed all sorts of nonsense like 'do what you love' and 'you can achieve anything you put your mind to', yet there is just a grain of truth in that. If you put constant work into self improvement then you can do alright, not great, but alright. Don't search for utopia, don't search for perfection because you won't get them. Just do the best you can everyday with the situation you've been dealt and hope to find meaning in that. Finally, and I know I can't speak for everyone here, but your parents do try. I know it feels like they don't understand you, and you're probably right, but they do their best and you'll miss them when they're gone. Take that one from experience.

I remember one time in 7th grade. I'd gotten my algebra test back and saw that I'd score an A question. I was so happy because I usually do really bad on all math tests, barely even passing them but when I told my mom about it all she said was "that's great but you could've done better". I think I just gave up on math after that... What's the point in trying if I'm never good enough?

I've never commented on anything ever, but this just felt different to me. I love my parents, and I'm especially close to my mom, but sometimes I feel like I have no one to open up to. My solution to deppression and suicidal thoughts was always just making it into a joke, or tell myself that I'm being overdramatic, but in the end, my pain is just as real as anyone's. I know that my parents have had rough childhoods and that their loves have not been easy, but this does not mean that my life is. Even if my problems may be much more internal it does not mean they don't exist, and my parents have a very clear and "happy" vision for my life, but I'm not sure it would be MY life. I want to be happy for myself, not for others. So that means that if I'm 14 and bi my parents should love me for it, even if it isn't exactly what they envisioned for me. Everyone deserves respect and love. No matter who you are, or what you are going through, YOU, personally, deserve love and respect and I wish you the best. There is someone out there who will love the real you. Strive to find people like that, and find your own happiness.

Their incompetence and machiavellianism has real world consequences that has and will continue to negatively impact generations upon generations of all life on earth even long after they're gone. If it were simply a difference of view points between generations that'd be one thing. But, on a very general scale, they are fairly terrible. It'd be nice if it were so simple that I'd feel comfortable with agreeing to turn the other cheek. But, unfortunately it isn't. They have cannibalized their own children and grandchildren for their own personal gain. Personally, that is unforgivable. I can still appreciate your viewpoint though.

The problem is, I had already moved it out of the way and was reaching for a vacuum before my mother started screaming. EDIT: Another funny thing is that, before writing this, I thought: "What if my mother sees it? She'll be so angry". Because I already don't expect a guardian to recognize their own mistakes. I expect them to cover it up and make me the bad guy.

They had to survive a cruel world and when you have to "survive" something, these features are extremely hard to change because they are the reason you made it this far in life. Your savety net. What the Gen Z is doing extremely right is to look at these Videos and make the future better. This is what I decided for myself and I see the fruits of this change when speaking to my little humans in class :)

Blessed this teacher. I've always told my mom to let me figure things out when I fail. But its always her way or the high way. I'm an artist and the one time I was proud of a drawing, she told me it was too dark and weird and that it needed more color and happiness. Now she gets mad when I refuse to show her what I make. She thinks I'm a bad kid even tho I never have done drugs or touched a cigarette like most teens in my school. There will be times she comes home and complains that it's too warm or there's a dish in the sink. I told her (nicely) that she should be grateful there's someone at home making the mess, eating meals with you, and turning up the heat. It beats coming home to an empty only shell of a house. I've accepted she won't change at this point. She won't hear my cries for love and affection. I shut my emotions off around her to avoid conflict and pain on both ends. She thinks I'm rude and inconsiderate now. I've learned to accept it. Bless this teacher. I'm glad she understands.

And even tho he’s tone deaf he would say “if u did that on the street ppl would pay u to shut up” so I stopped singing in front of people completely, to the point where I can’t Rembrandt the last time I sung at all.

If they make a mistake i push them back on the right path and explain why it's wrong and they go on their way again. The last girl who was afraid of heights didn’t, and the rest of the week she felt left out no matter how we tried to include her. She said she wouldn’t have felt so bad if the adults hadn’t pressured her to “try it” , and made her touch the pole and try to climb it. Every teen had tried to comfort her and encourage, but not force. The difference was in the delivery, and I think adults don’t often understand that.

Watching this video, the first thing that comes to mind is this really sweet guy I knew through elementary into high school. Super nice, but not always the sharpest tool in the shed. For context, my high school chem class had simple molecule models dangling from the ceiling. We weren't supposed to touch them because they were very old and replacing them was kinda a pain. However, this guy was really fascinated by the water and CO2 molecules dangling from the ceiling. He really wanted to make them swing and fly around like a cat plays with a feather on a stick, and I can totally understand both him and the proverbial cat (it's fun playing with things dangling from the ceiling I've done it so many times). I think the smartest thing I ever heard from him was his excuse for why the molecules were swinging around: "They're turning into a gas, Miss." I don't think anyone in that class saw him quite the same after that.

I feel my social issues and low self esteem stems from my parents complaining and yelling at me whenever I messed up. I remember vividly one time I forgot to tell them I was staying late out to go to dinner with friends so when they came to pick me up I got yelled at and my mum was in a mood with me for a week. I'm always afraid to speak up for myself and when I try to I burst into tears since I'm afraid of what the other party will say back to me.

Yeah, its like the schools didn't teach you anything of resource. Parents may be teaching you life lessons, but they don't teach you the ways to get by in life. What am I supposed to do with Algebra when the job I want has nothing to do with algebra. How about teaching us things that will help us.

Everything this lady has said was true. Im 16 and i have around 10 or so people that come to me for advice, their insecurities, and ask how they can improve their skills because their parents simply dont want to use their 30+ years of experience to just sit down with them and fill them with knowledge and the advice they need. My parents where the perfect balance for this, my mother being the one to push me and help me to my limits and my dad who had so much wisdom to share, and after being bullied, and after my mom passing away from cancer, i can say that ive been through everything and I want to help people as my parents helped me. Because of the advice ive given, i feel fuller, i feel like im a genuinely good person without a care in the world. I hope the next generation of kids have parents that use their wisdom to the fullest exstent, treat their children’s ideas with an open mind and see that after a while you will end up with genius, humble, and emotionally intelligent people who now have the knowledge to take on every situation with a great attitude.

I usually don’t comment on videos, but I feel like I need to for this one. I’m an 18 year old girl finishing out senior year. It’s seldom to have a teacher who listens to you, and who really cares, especially in the huge high schools most of us attend. I got super sick in my sophomore year, both physically and mentally. We couldn’t figure it out for a long time and I began to loose hope. I ended up missing a lot of school and cutting myself off from my friends and family. After the Valentine’s Day school shooting in Florida I didn’t go back to the school. If I had a teacher who listened and checked in on me at the time I might have stayed and done better that year. I spiraled mentally and almost gave up completely. I ended up in a small charter high school. I became a person in a community rather than a number. I’m about to graduate high school, the ceremony is pushed back because of covid but I’ll still be able to walk in my graduation. I was balling my eyes out by the end of the video. I see this all of the time. This message is one that I wish reached more people, especially adults who work with or around kids and teens. So many of my friends and classmates come from families where they aren’t listened to or aren’t able to have real discussions. Thank you so much for sharing the message that isn’t heard when coming from us.

Messages like this make me consider becoming a teacher when I’m older. I know how much of a difference a good teacher that truly puts the time and effort in to allow you to understand and to also acknowledge both your strengths and weaknesses and knows that life happens whether you want it to or not. Every person, every student needs that encouragement because sometimes they can’t get from anyone else in their lives, not even themselves. Someone simply saying, “I’m proud of you,” can make someone’s day 100 times better because you don’t know what they had to go through that day. Every person in that hallway has something they’re dealing with that you don’t know about.

"our teenagers do not need more likes. they need the flesh and blood humans they admire most... look individuals in the eye, take them by the hand and reassure them that they are of immeasurable worth... that there is no mistake or life circumstance from which they cannot recover, that their ideas matter." this part 15:17 really got to me. if listened to, this line could change the lives of so many people.
