In todays connected world, data and its integration play a huge role in society. Healthcare in itself is an information business that requires exchange of materials to adequately manage patients while providing safe and effective care. Patient confidentiality is not only a legal regal requirement but also an ethical responsibility for providers. Information on our patients must be protected at all times to preserve the patient’s privacy, ensure confidentiality and prevent the misuse of this medical information. Collection, storage and sharing of medical records are essential in today’s healthcare to ensure quality of treatment between providers. With this, providers must ensure that this information is collected with patients consent and kept secure during the entirety of the patient-doctor relationship and on. This information is not limited to their medical history, test results, medication use, and hospitalizations. It is essential that providers have a robust system in place to ensure protection of this data from unauthorized access or use. With this, patients have the right to expect that their personal information is being secure and is only being used for the purpose to which it was collected. More so, providers must ensure that patient information is not shared without the direct consent of the patient. Personal electronic security plays a role here and physicians must ensure that passwords are always protected, emails are encrypted, and login information is never stored in an open or easily accessible area. Another important aspect regarding patient records is also to ensure that they are accurate and up to date. In doing so, providers will ensure that changes to a patient’s condition or care actively reflect the patient’s current health status or treatment regimen. Healthcare providers must also be upfront and transparent about how the patient information is being collected, used and even shared between providers. This is a right to all patients to know how their personal information is being use and who may have access to it. It is the providers responsibility to ensure that the patients are provided with clear information about their rights and more so the protections put in place protecting their information. Protection of a patient’s information is critical in providing safe and effect healthcare. One must respect the patients right to autonomy in regard to how this information is handled withing their treatment. It is crucial that only information collected is given via the patients consent. Ensuring a secure, accurate and up to date records for patients as they move forward in their lives. Transparency is key here and we must ensure that patient records are never leaked or used for nefarious purposes. This will help to establish trust between the patient and provider and promote safety and the upmost quality of care to patients.

HIPAA Compliance is most likely the largest problem out there. If I were a doctor, I wouldn't want to share data about a patient's condition even if it was for the betterment of mankind because HIPAA compliance and the doctor's clause makes me responsible for the confidentiality and trust between patient and doctor. The problem isnt that Doctors don't want to work with the data, it's that getting said data publicized, even if the patient's names are not made public require a lot of documentation and consent from the patient.
