Thank you for giving such a passionate and positive speech on tattoos and tattooing. As you say tattoos do not affect your ability to work. In there simplest form tattoos are merely ink under the skin. The person after the receiving the tattoo, is just the same one as they were before needle touched skin. Of course they possibly feel more empowered and able to display their self in a open act of identity. Judge us on the content of our character, not the colours of our skin; ( with the greatest of respect to Dr Martin Luther King). Once again thank you for your passion and eloquence about the art.

I guess the difference is that race, gender etc are not chosen and tattoos are. But I totally agree that tattoos shouldn’t be viewed negatively and should be accepted as a part of identity.

Tattoos have been part of cultures across the globe, even before each culture knew that other cultures existed. Each culture has it's own reason for tattoos. Our 'Civilised Culture' today is slowly growing out of the 'psudo-tabooes' it had built to be called civilised.

12:38 ❤💜. Thank you for your wonderful Ted talk . Very well articulated … getting one very soon to honor my 14 year old dog that I recently lost . I knew that tattoos had a rich history , but I learned much that I didn’t know about the history of this tradition .

Although the speaker made several valid points, I wish they would have acknowledged the major difference between tattoos and all the other elements of a person's identity that were mentioned in comparison. Tattoos are choices. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe our society should discriminate against people simply for having tattoos. But certainly there should be some exceptions. For example, perhaps a company like Disney might deny someone employment if they have the "Nickelodeon" logo tatted on their neck and refuse to cover it while at work. There are also lots of profane tattoos that would not be a good look for certain companies. I think if the tattoo goes against the company's specific policy, they should at least give the applicant the option of coming to work with the tattoo being covered.

Also there's a reason employers typically win in lawsuits where job applicants claim their 1st amendment right is being violated. The phrase "freedom of expression" is vague enough that it can be interpreted differently depending on the situation. Whereas "freedom of religion" explicitly protects people from religious discrimination.

Awesome! I've started thinking like that after I got my first tattoo, but could never put it in words. I used to be the kind of person who would just ask people: "why would you have something on your body that cannot be removed?" Thank God, most of us change our minds. :) I don't know how many tattoos I have now, stopped counting (each and every one of them represent a little of who I am). Thank you for this wonderful talk.

I honestly just think that it's still a stigma because of the way the tattoo looks and executed. Let me elaborate, In my personal experience, I see more women with more thought out, nice, creative tattoos, smaller one but very nice whereas the males tattoos are just all over the place meaning it looks bad, ink, the lines etc. not saying that there aren't males with very good ones, because i've seen veryyyy good one but again from my experience. I feel like guys get more sh*t for them for those reasons. I've never seen someone get criticized for having a REALLY WELL DONE tattoo. I don't have none but I WANT ONE SO BAD!! but then I think about jobs and my travels. When it comes to jobs, I try to see it in the perspective of a CEO etc. I think the problem depends on what kind of job it is. If you have a job that has to meet other people from different countries, different ages and have meetings etc, a lot of these people were raised with that mentality that tattoos are bad and even are afraid to do business so I guess CEO fear that aspect of it but with me also when I travel I like to hangout with the locals, I eventually want to visit Japan but tattoos are still seen as bad. So for those reasons is what holds me back. I know many would read this and be like but just wear long sleeve shirts, true but I always think about what if one day we have a work bbq or an it's hot out lol idk I could be overthinking. Curious to know what you guys think.

I completely understand your worries, but a person can have a tattoo on so many different areas of the body that people just won't see. I have 2 tattoos, but simple and fine line tattoos, I am a waitress and a student-teacher but the second someone sees one of the 2 tattoos they are shocked. having a tattoo shouldn't mean that you have a bad work ethic or that you are unprofessional, it should depend on the tattoo's placement, and what the tattoo is. what the speaker is saying is that employers should look beyond their tattoos and what they symbolize. if it's a swastika on the middle of your forehead, yeah, shame on you. but if it is something less controversial, then what people think of you shouldn't change.

Ever heard of MS13? Tattoos carry a message and present an image just like the way you dress does. But you can change your clothes. You're stuck with that ink forever, regardless of how your worldview changes or what your career choices might be.

@@redpalex Why not temporary tattoos? Then someone can be impulsive and spontaneous. Getting a tattoo is like wearing the same pair of clothes for the rest of your life. My generation wore lots of pendants. I don't even see many today. There are so many options for personalized clothing now.
