It never occurred to me that my body and I are on the same team, that we're in this together and need to work together. I'm 41 years old and spent most of my life fighting against my body because it didn't look the way I thought it should to be worthy of love. Thank you for sharing your story.

Sara Lucy Morgan - Have you been able to overcome your body image issues? Your comment above reminded me so much of me and I just turned 42! The struggle is real even in older women

@@aromkee I'm getting there! The thing that really helped was when I wrote a list of all the things I didn't like about my body and all the things I did. The 'I like' list was triple the 'I don't like' list! I always assumed I didn't like most of my body but when I broke it down, I realised how wrong I was! Mind blown!!

7:30 She’s so right. It’s so much more than that. Looking in the mirror and telling yourself that you have nice eyes wont take away from the fact that you hate just about everything else. It goes deeper than that.

Like, I'm literally crying rn. I thought about it over and over and over again, and it is just so true! I also resolved to make life easier for these so-called men and people that felt the need and the right to judge me or 'fall victim' to my body. Painfully true.

If only all Ted talks had this quality of speaker and message. Hard fought experiences, genuine wisdom and insight, and eloquently and engagingly presented. Its downright absurd this has so few views and likes.

A part of me strongly resonates with what you said. Allowing this feeling of unsafety to be experienced is painful while at the same time I´m feeling relieved and very, very thankful for what I am and for your inspiring words. Moved me to tears, thank you for the precious work you´re doing!

This was amazing! I understand some elements of myself that I never have enough thought to. I've ranted about the 'love your body' movement as I've never seen it as progressive movement. What you said changed that... It's about loving it for different reasons than we have been told previously. This explanation is very profound and acurate. Thank you xx

Jessi, the way you speak is breathtaking. I don't exactly knowhow to describe it the right way, but your story is inspirational and i was feeling bad for hearing the things you had to endure with men. Your story telling narrative is very inspirational, i could feel the chills in my body thinking of my own daugher and every other girl in the world that god forbid may encounter herself in a dangerous situation with men. Now thanks to your i could see another side of the definition BodyImage. Thank you

You literally made me sob when you referenced that our bodies have been on our side and there to support us, this whole time (paraphrasing) and that we're on the same team. My interpretation of that is that I have been responsible for an abusive, destructive and unfair relationship with a part of me that has only ever wanted me to love it. I struggle every damn day with my obsession and OCD with my body and I have tried other methods of learning how to love and celebrate it, and to change the way my mind perceives my reflection. You've just given me a new thought pattern to drill into my head, and hopefully it will drive out all the negativity and hate that I've allowed to live there for 42 of my 50 years on this earth.

I wish I could be a woman for a year so I could better understand how it would feel. I also feel it's a shame that things are the way they are....not just with this, but there are so many changes we could make as a society that would barely take any resources but would benefit us immensely. People just need to care and be the change.

I feel insecure about my body because I am thin, people have so much commands & can never be pleased, if you're trying to lose weight so other people are happy with you, they won't and if they did it's horrible you're going the next mile to please those who don't accept you, give yourself all the approval you wished for, and be willing to accept reality, people won't be all pleased with your look. The body is not meant to be ideal even if there's something you can do, doing it brings more harm internally and unacceptance because you're telling yourself when I reach this point everything will be excellent, either it will never be or it will have a short life and you'll realize your not perfect 'if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it'. Be okay with it taking time, it's a journey of unfolding the previous goal of reaching the unrealistic unicorn shape, & allow yourself to grieve the ideal body and the gains you uttered to see, let go of the unrealistic expectations, walk yourself gently you are loved.

MunkeyCo It’s been a long time since I listened to this but I think I was hoping for some sociological or biological data, not just someone sharing their experience. I also do not think that her notion of standards of beauty is universal. Living outside the US I realize that standards of beauty are culturally relative.
