Pakistan's only player of the Saagar Veena, Noor Zehra, rouses the audience to a standing ovation with her breath-taking performance. Saagar means ocean and Veena means sound, allowing the instrument to be an "ocean of sound".
About the speaker
Noor Zehra is the daughter of Raza Kazim, the founder of the esteemed Sanjan Nagar Institute of Arts and Philosophy. Zehra has aided her father in furthering the development of the stringed instrument sagar veena and is currently Pakistan's sole sagar veena player. Her formal musical training began during 1971 with Rajeshwari Datta in London, England and later at the Ali Akbar Khan College for Music in Berkeley, USA. She has performed with her sagar veena at music festivals from Japan to Norway.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

There are two main differences between sagar veena and vichitra veena. Firstly, the resonating gourds; the vichitra veena has poorly resonant gourds that are more physical support than resonating chamber. Secondly, the bridge is seperated from the body in sagar veena, enhancing resonance of the gourds. It is of the same family as vichitra veena and quite similar superficially. It is also superficially similar to rudra veena but no one would say it is a rudra veena.

It is not similar to the Rudra Veena in any way

Not similar to the rudra veena in any way except that it's literally two resonating gourds and a bar with strings in between? What are you talking about?
@ayushkhanna8126
@ayushkhanna8126 7 жыл бұрын
autobotftwww Take a look at how the Rudra Veena is played. Also take a closer look at the structure. In the Rudra Veena, the gourds are distinct. In this Veena, the bridge is a part of the two gourds. The structure is vastly different. The Rudra Veena has frets. This does not. It is played with a bar. The differences are too many. This Veena is closer to the Vichitra Veena not the Rudra Veena.
@autobotftwww

You must be joking. Vastly different? I said the instruments were superficially similar. Is two gourds and a bar with strings in between not a superficial similarity? My first comment specifically states the bridge is separate in sagar veena!

@420dada Sagar Veena is not like any other instrument readily available in the market. Madam Noor's father Reza Kazim made it. It took him more than 30 years to perfect the design. Madam Noor is an accomplished Sitar player but then shifted to Sagar Veena. She is the only player of this instrument because nthis instrument belongs to this family.

Not really!! You cannot pull from sa to higher sa and traverse Meand notes as you can do in Vichitra Veena. Playing on frets and playing without frets are two different things. Its more of a gayaki ang that you can potray in Vichitraveena which is not possible in a fretted instrument..whether sitar or a rudra veena or a saraswathi veena or surbahar....
