Originally from Syria, Laila Alhariri has been living in Germany for almost 7 years now and is currently finishing her medical studies at TU Dresden. When she first moved to Germany, it was nothing odd for people to ask where Syria is. As time passed by and the country she came from started to occupy the media, people started giving her looks of pity, compassion as well as despise and prejudices. All they think of is war, refugees and Pegida, however this is not the way Laila sees her country. The life, the culture and the nature - it all forms a picture so different of what everybody thinks! Listen to Laila’s story on breaking stereotypes about Syria and its people at TEDxTUBerlin 2019. Laila was born to a Syrian father and a Ukrainian mother. She lived in Syria and started studying medicine at Damascus university and later moved to Germany to continue her medical studies.
Living in Berlin, she was grateful to have found a peaceful home in Germany. Laila also tried to support refugees from her home country: whether through volunteering with children in Berlin or working in a refugee clinic/international practice in Dresden, which helped her perceive the gap expanding between both Syrians and Germans culturally and socially and she was able to learn directly about the misconceptions and clichés created about Syrians and Arabs in general, and therefore wanted to clarify some stereotypes as well as present the resemblances as a connection that brings them together. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
