5 жыл бұрын

Around 60% of Americans say they have either rarely or have never talked to a Muslim before. That’s more than 190 million Americans -- and in his talk, Moaaz sheds some light on what Islam really is to these people, and how we can change the negative perceptions surrounding it. Moaaz Elbarbry is a senior at Liberty High School. He is very involved in his local Muslim community, and is the co-manager of a religious non-profit organization called Sons of Adam, which provides safe spaces for Muslim boys in Oregon to thrive physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Moaaz is on the Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council, where he works with a group of youth leaders to mold Hillsboro into a better city for all of its citizens. In his free time, Moaaz loves to do anything related to soccer: watching, playing, analyzing, practicing and debating the sport are all enjoyable for him. His experiences at school and in his community have motivated him to be an advocate for Muslims, and he hopes to shed a positive light in a time of misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding Muslims. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The central teaching of Islam is the definition of the word "Mono"theism. To set the example of unity to others by not splitting Gods divinity. Man creates religion and sects by splitting this divinity and idolising parts of God's creation.

Unfortunately in Europe, like Belgium, the Netherlands and France for example the Moroccans and other Muslim immigrants don't have such good reputation in every day life. So it's kind of hard for others to take them seriously let alone believing they are spreading anything good about islam. They should be aware of themselves as being the ambassador of their own faith. Well said, good conduct is everything. Unfortunately there had never been any public demonstrations nor condemnation of Isis in those communities either. How come?

The speaker advises non-Muslims to meet Muslims. I have met an imam, and conversed for for about 20 minutes with him. At some point, I also have read Bill Warner's book, An Abridged Koran. (In it, Warner presents verses from the Koran put into the context of the Sunna -- that is, the life of Muhammad.) My understanding of Islam does not come from my discussion with an imam, but from Warner's book (and other documented sources).

Muslims value peace only when they're a minority. When they are the majority, peace is over and whether you submit to Islam, or you're dead.

Islam means "SUBMISSION" to the one and only creator Allah subhanah wa ta'ala. The root word of islam is the word "silm" which means submission. Or another definition is "PEACE" acquired through submission to Allah.

As true as it may be, but we as Muslims have also to acknowledge the fact that there lots of uneducated, bigoted and fanatically agressive people among us. I mean those guys who maintain ideology of "us vs them" or "do not befriend a non-Muslim" and also harass any ex-Muslim or non-Muslim person. And don't forget those who ban music, arts (and I mean drawing creatures), science, dances and always love to threaten with hellfire for any smallest reason. Or those nutjobs who executed a guitar, or that wierdo who screamed after seeing Michaelangelo's Creation of Adam in a text book. There's gotta be a reformation if not in religion but definitely in mindset. We have to critically analize our religion and decide what stuff is outdated and is not applicable in this day and age. Remeber Islamic Golden Age was maintained by freethinkers and philosophers not clerics or orthodoxy. Right now Islamic World is going through the same Dark Age as Europe did before Age of Enlightenment with witch-hunts and obscurantism.

He should go and try to modernize islam where its necessary . In Saudi Arabia , Iran , Pakistan etc .... . Personally I'm kinda annoyed by Muslims trying to lecture us in europe or the us about how to treat minorities, tolerance etc . All while minority rights in almost all Islamic nations are laughable and even standard human rights get violated in the name of Islam.
