As an American Muslim journalist, Sahar often finds herself being "othered" because she doesn't fit into popular perception of what Muslims are, or, what she calls, the "Muslim box" built by Hollywood, the news industry and politicians. In this talk, she explains what being Muslim means to her and how the world's 1.7 billion Muslims are "so vast, varied, and intersectional that they cannot possibly fit into a box." Sahar also warns that powerful privileged people use this box to build structural Islamophobia. As the mother of a 4-year-old daughter and a former Stanford Knight Fellow, Ghazi says it is time to change the conversation about what it means to be Muslim today.
Sahar Habib Ghazi is the managing editor at Global Voices, a trusted international community of 1400 editors, writers, and translators who report on untold stories in more than 167 countries. Ghazi has lived half her life in the U.S. and half in Pakistan, reporting for The New York Times, DawnNews TV and Geo News TV. In 2009, she produced The Disposable Ally, the first documentary series on U.S. and Pakistan relations. Ghazi was a Knight Journalism fellow at Stanford University in 2011. As a multi-media journalist, editor and podcaster, Ghazi aims to disrupt unjust dominant narratives about marginalized communities.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@@roshnik5137 that's due to constant brainwashing by media. Unfortunately some ignorants believe everything on tv without questioning it's legitimacy or true goal behind such propaganda. It shouldn't be a secret that big powers are after the geopolitical advantage that Muslim countries have due to their location as well as the resources in these countries and so they will use all their powers to take control of it including military power and media propaganda. Some people fall for such propaganda understandably though as they are good at it and most people readily believe news when the news describe "others" and if it is convinient for them to believe and therefore get a sense of belonging with surrounding society. It shouldn't be hard to realize though which countries did the most destruction in the last century including the destruction of many Muslim countries but you are affraid to admit it and stand up to the real problem.

The other thing about women in politics, in Islamic countries is that, these countries are not democratic in any sense. Therefore, certain families hold much of the emotional appeal, hence they rule. You won’t have a Benazir Bhutto as the prime minister of Pakistan if she was not the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was the military dictator of Pakistan in the 1970’s. She was elected in a pseudo democratic system which was backed by the army. These things are an eyewash for the world media. Women have next to nothing rights in Islamic countries.

Awesome Dude.......what you just referred to as "Jihad" is not the same to Muslims......and who you just referred to as "brothers" are not the same to Muslims......so your argument is invalid. but here is something for you to ponder......No one calls you or other white English men "barbarics" because of the atrocities they have carried out all over the world (including present day India/Pakistan) during the colonial era...........because it would simply be ignorant of me to paint you with the same colour. No one calls you their brothers. So why don't you take a step back, rethink, maybe talk to an actual Muslim about Islamic matters and then come back with a more informed comment.

I like this talk and I can see her point of view, BUT the 'Us vs Them' separation was initially perpetuated by Muslims. It still is perpetuated by Muslims in many Muslim nations, including so-called 'moderate' Muslim majority Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, etc etc. Religious minorities are often treated as 2nd class citizens in Muslim majority countries like Egypt and Malaysia. Christians and other religious minorities are often not allowed to build or have so much restrictions on building churches and temples. So when anti-Muslim protesters call for the banning of mosques and Islamic institutions, they have to realise that these non-Muslim protesters are simply reflecting back to them the same restrictions Muslims in another part of the world imposes on their non-Muslim citizens. It's a push back and a way of saying you can't have your cake and eat it. Also, I have witnessed the shifting conservatism in Muslims around the world, particularly in South East Asia where many Muslims will not want to sit next to a non-Muslim in a public space and have their respective meals. They perpetuate this 'Us vs Them', we are 'clean' they are 'unclean', we are believers they are the unbelievers identity separation. Muslims are the ones initiating this. Maybe it's a superiority complex they feel. Though that 'superiority complex' they have has ZERO basis. When Muslims try to shift the blame and say they are the 'victims', they have to be very careful because very often it is Muslims who subject religious minorities in their Muslim-majority countries to persecution and discrimination. Because Muslims are also the perpetrators of discrimination, non-Muslims see the double standards and resist the narrative that Muslims are sometimes victims too. The ball is in the Muslim court for them to speak out against the unfair discrimination by fellow Muslims (around the world) against non-Muslim religious minorities, women and sexual minorities (LGBTI communities). Only then will Muslims likely to see any form of discrimination against them diminish.

What your proposing makes sense but it will never happen. These people have an agenda. They want and expect to rule the world. A live and let live mentality is not part of what they believe. Their plan is implemented simply by over populating the coutries where they are to become the majority. Then they infiltrate the government and take over the country without firing a shot. This is called fata.

The real problem with discrimination by muslims is they couldn't care less. If you want to know the story about the US and Muslim nation's first conflict google Thomas Jefferson vs Islam. That conflict and how it played out is why the US has what is known as the Marine Corps today. Read about it and you will begin to understand the kind of conflict that had to take place to force the Muslims to back down. Complete anialation is the only thing these people understand when it comes to stopping thier aggressive ways.

Why is it that no matter where you go muslims are in violent conflict with their neighbours, hosts, and themselves?

(10:46 - 10:57) contradicts (1:16 - 1:30) & (7:28 - 7:35) & (12:21 - 12:35) you are either separate or in the same tribe. If you are both separate and yet in the same tribe, then you share pros and cons of the overall tribe.

RE: Some of the comments on here about Rumi. The average educated person may *know* that Rumi was Muslim, but she's saying that this aspect of his identity is very often de-emphasized in the literature industry and in the American conceptions of Rumi.

The problem of americans is not that they don't have a woman commander and chief. Both women and men can be awful rulers. Americans need to learn who are the good guys that don't get corrupt by power and wealth. And maybe after that elect people who are somewhat decent. And not people who don't believe in climate change. Heck I'm not even sure if he knows the difference between sunni and shia muslims.

The Muslim Dude there is no difference...it is just politics. I don't care one bit about who should have inherited the leadership role over the Muslim world hundreds of years ago. Such divisions only serve the war industry and people searching for others to pick on and (falsely) blame for their suffering/problems.

+Code Junkes As far as I know Ahmadis believe in innovative beliefs in Islam. They say there is another prophet coming after Muhammad peace be upon him, and even though we believe that Isa (Jesus) is coming we don't say that he is coming with any new message to his arrival. When you enter into Islam you do it by saying the shahada. Thats the declaration faith which is "There is only one God and Muhammad is His slave and final messenger" . Ahmadis have an issue with this by not embracing the fundamentals of Islam. The same like as if I call myself Christian but don't believe in the fundamentals of Christianity. With that said I'm not saying they need to be punished or anything, heck no. Its just problematic to call them Muslims thats all.

They want to call them Muslims and it is their choice, you can not take it away form them that. Now ISIS may not think you are a true Muslims because you reject slavery and sex slavery which they think as a integral part of their version of the religion. They have their scriptural evidence for that. And according to you ISIS are not true Muslim for the same reason. This is a endless debate so believe in Humanity and Human Rights, it is their human right to call themselves whatever they want. If each human human being respects others human right and give them equal right according human rights they the world will be a great place to leave without any war or violence. I will encourage you to study about Human Rights.

@EnteBoi Islam and politics are intricately connected, it is not the full truth to say Muslim countries don't equal to Islam. Countries living under Sharia law do equal Islam, they can be no more Islamic. To me it seems some do not like the quality of life offered in these countries and the quality of life this type of governance can provide (and many do like it), and some unsatisfied move to Western countries for the material and lifestyle differences. Many integrate well, but some only want to change the new country to what they're familiar with (which does bring many good qualities with it, but some changes are more difficult for established populations). From what it seems to me, (I'm still learning and am not fixed in my ideas), it seems that peace lasts until the voting numbers change. With over 4 children on average in Muslim families, and 2 in other Western families, it only takes a few generations to be able to change political representation. Then laws change, and the probability of conflict increases (think Kosovo, Rohingya/Burma, Central African Republic, etc). Add to this the number of Muslim countries that are 95% Muslim or more, with conflict against minorities is unnerving for those that don't follow the Islamic religion (it looks like low tolerance from the outside). Also that Islam has continuing conflicts with Christians (Africa, former Yugoslavia), Isreal (Lebanon, Iran, Palestine), Hindus (India/Kashmir), and Buddhists (Burma). No other religions are at conflict with each other, Islam is fighting them all. I hope I have not put the correct picture into place, and will watch Europe with it's rapidly increasing Muslim population closely. When voting majorities change, will the Muslims there try to change their host countries? Time will tell. The stakes couldn't be higher.

Please update your information about indian history.........FYI The Indus Civilization was destroyed by the Aryans who are considered the earliest Hindus came to India in about 1500BC which was way before the Holy Prophet(PBUH) started to spread the message of Islam in 7th centuryCE and the Muslims came to India in the 12th centuryCE and by this time the indus valley civilization was ancient history. Thus, proving that your point that muslims destroyed the Indus Valley Civilization was wrong as it is almost impossible.
