Learn how your biological clock or circadian rhythm tunes physiology, metabolism and brain function. Dr. Satchin Panda's research shows thousands of genes in every cell turn on and off at specific times of the day. This gene orchestra dictates the optimum times for everything from athletic performance, shaving, taking medicine to cramming for an exam.
Satchin Panda, PhD is a scientist and researcher at the Salk Institute in San Diego.
TEDxYouth@SanDiego is an independently organized TEDx event designed by youth, for youth to bring the power of big ideas to the youth of San Diego -- and the world. www.TEDxYouthSanDiego.com
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Very interesting. A friend of mine is an extremely competitive athlete that routinely engages in things I never would, like ultra-marathons, 100 mile bike rides, etc.-- and he told me that if I wanted to lose weight or trim up, all I really needed to do was to not eat after 7pm. And in case where there must be an exception, it could not include carbs. His advice (which I know came from his own personal experience) seems to correlate well with this video.

Tyler Breeden why carbs? Why not fats, which could just as easily get stored as adipose?
@Vanessagetthickfitv

Because carbs actually turn into glucose and get stored as fat much quickly than fats do. The Keto diet is a main example of using fat for energy instead of carbs, Atkins is another.

Vanessa Incorrect. Processed or semi-processed foods turn to fat quicker, not fruits and vegetables, which are predominantly carbs.

Ivan B Youre talking about two different things. Processed foods can include fruits and vegetables. When people are talking about eating keto they need to be excluding starches and sugars, primarily. Eating broccoli and spinach is fine.The intake of protein and fat is not looked at as a negative. Some keto food can be processed. I tend to stay away from most of that.

He’s on to something here but honestly I believe the circadian rhythm is a sync up of your sleeping and eating patterns. So time restricted eating and proper sleeping patterns help facilitate the rest of the bodily functions

You're body will adjust if given time. Slowly decrease your eating window by 30 minutes a week until you finally reach the recommended eating time for your last meal, which is 6 hours before going to bed.
@lisathorley
@lisathorley 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah Scott's right. We have a circadian rhythm not just for sleep, but for other bodily functions too (such as eating). So you can adjust your eating pattern so that you will be hungry way before bed, and not hungry near your bedtime.

Why is Circadian Rhythm "Synced" with the cycle of the rotation of the earth? Generally speaking, we become conscious or "rise" with the suns appearance, and we hibernate with its disappearance. Is it purely from light stimulation being that the sun is out, thereby stimulating consciousness? Light photon induced consciousness.

Though the SCN is the primary body clock (or the hub), organs and tissues can act independently. For example, you decide after a night out with friends to sleep through most of the next day, because this is a one off to you, the timing of how your organs and tissues won't change. Your kidney will still remove waste from blood and balance body fluid within their natural and best times. Note how it won't rely on the SCN (because you're asleep). However, if you continue going down this road, you are re-training your kidneys by shifting the timing of when they work best (day time) to times when they should be resting. This opens the doors to many diseases. It is also why those that work nights only die younger. I'm tempted to say, although I personally do think it's in the morning because of the high energy surge, it peaks in the after afternoon. My educated guess is to see us through the day so we do not drop off completely.

Is he sure the clock tells us to eat in the morning when we wake up and not a few hours before we go to sleep? I especially wonder given how insulin helps melatonin production. I think organisms normally rest after eating, though many animals eat all the time, but that isn't fasting. Also, mouse and human hormones may not be the same timing.
@lopezthinktank
@lopezthinktank 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great observation. I have come across videos that explain insulin resistance; the spike in glucose in your blood can cause you to feel sleepy. Perhaps the type of food in your diet is also important. Checkout Tyler Breeden's comment about no carbs after 7pm. Also, remember in Thanksgiving we eat turkey that contains Tryptophan which also causes sleepiness. Food is intended to be fuel for the body but maybe we tend to overindulge requiring our body to break down food before we can move about more comfortably. --Check out the Chinese Organ Clock.

Amhifb fat diet is not an unhealthy diet. You really must live undrer a rock if you still believe that today. Fat is more calorie dense than protein snd carbs, so a lesser volume of foos contains the same calories. That's all.

What if you always sleep with bright light on because you are afraid of the dark? What would this do to your clock?
@lisathorley
@lisathorley 5 жыл бұрын
Well a bright indoor light is probably around 500 lux (light intensity) whereas outside light is in the 10,000's. You will still register the light change outside, and still have some kind of patterned circadian rhythm for your sleep. Also melatonin is produced during dark lighting, so your indoor bedroom light won't prevent melatonin production, but perhaps lessen or delay it. So the result would be that your circadian clock would be delayed, and you'll fall asleep later and later. But there's other factors that come into it too (e.g. Sleep propensity (sleep 'pressure'), eating habits, wake up habits, sleep hygiene (phone use in bed), exercise, stress etc.).

Biological Alarm Clock: Biological alarm clocks are biological mechanisms that tell us when to eat, when to sleep, and when to make babies. For women, oftentimes the biological clock goes awry, and begins to signal all sorts of jarring behaviors that seem at least to the man of the house to be most untimely. This biological alarm clock jolts a woman into action, or more likely, into prodding a man into actions at the wrong time. A woman's biological alarm clock is often out of sync with her husband's own biological clock, which naturally runs much slower. The man compensates by resetting his own clock to give himself more time. Unfortunately, women have no capability to reset their own clocks. This results in their ringing just in time to tell their husband to vacuum the floor as he settles back to relax from a hard day at the office, or to mow the law or bath the kid just as the big game comes on TV. All too often the wife gets all wound up just as the husband starts to unwind. Unfortunately, the only way to set back your wife's clock is with a blunt object to the head. However, this is not recommended since it would set her back in time permanently, and force you to do time, as in jail. from Dr. Mezmer’s World of Bad Psychology, found on an internet near you!
