I had this malfunction just recently, it was caused by old lines which had shrunk causing the line attachment points to pull through the grommets. In my case it cleared easily by gently pulling on the front risers but it still freaked me out and I grounded myself until I had the canopy relined.
@janellmills56787 жыл бұрын
chrisevilgenius you didn't have this mal because of an old line set. His brakes and possibly d's aren't routed through the gromet on his slider.... which means whoever packed it is a dumbfuck and needs to gtfo the packing floor and he needs to have a Rigger install his slider.

Well, though this video is several years old, this wingsuiter appears to have used the "Don't delay, cut away!" method -- and he was under his spinning canopy at 4000', nice! I agree with some other folks who think that RSLs are still statistically better than not...I'm a chickenshit skydiver, and I pretty much only wingsuit (I have no plans to BASE jump) and I have RSL, Skyhook, and Wingsuit specific Cypres AAD, and I jump a big 210 WinX... (~230 lbs exit weight) and on top of that, I pitch my main at 4000' so that I always have a buffer of altitude. I've read most every Parachutist incident report for the last 7 years, because I want to learn from others' mistakes and learn what NOT to do...statistically, you're better off with an RSL, MARD, AAD, etc, than without. Most deaths that I read about were very experienced jumpers that fought a malfunction too long, cut away too low to fully inflate the reserve, or didn't even pull the reserve... So I'd rather be spun up under a "there and square" reserve, than screaming "OH FU..." for the last split second of my life. And btw, I'm trying to coin the term "The weathervane technique" of getting out of line twists when wearing a wingsuit. If you're spun up in line twists -- absent a line over or other malfunction -- close your leg wing so that it doesn't counter act what you're about to do...figure out which way you need to turn, to UN-twist. Then figure out which way the relative wind is coming from. i.e. are you facing backwards as your canopy flies, and the wind is at your back? Once you've figured which direction to UN-twist, and which direction the wind is coming from, AND your legs are together to close your leg wing, think about which wing will start you spinning in your desired direction...like a weathervane, then stick that one wing out and catch the wind to start rotating. Once you've spun 180 degrees, switch arms to keep the UN-twist going. It works SO WELL and effortlessly rather than kicking your legs, or trying to mash/spread risers. Once the relative wind starts rotating you and you switch arms every half turn, it's quick & easy to get out of line twists in a wingsuit. "The weathervane technique!" (and remember to close your legs!) here you go: skydivemanual.altervista.org/blog/rsl-skyhook-or-faith-work-by-dan-brodsky-chenfeld/ and there's this report too... parachutistonline.com/p/Article/non-fatal-incident-summary-1
@geekdiggy3 жыл бұрын
i figured this out a long time ago and it's nice to see someone else thought of it too. i could never understand why everyone says "kick out" because it seldom ever seems to do the trick. i'm glad someone smarter than me came up with a word for it. it seems the weathervane trick could work even without a wingsuit, as it appears freeflyers have a tremendous amount of control using just their hands as propellers during freefall, so the same could be applied to line twists.

The first malfunction is a cravat, which is much more likely to happen on more elongated wings (eg. Paragliders). We solve it by pumping on the brakes on the side that is stuck, pulling on the outermost line of the wing (stabilo line) or even stalling the wing (if you are able). Ideally we use weight shift and a careful break on the opposite side to stop the rotation while we get it out.

@jonatancordoba79844 жыл бұрын
It does if you have some sort of reserve deployment assistance gear. There are a few types of them but basically (and oversimplifying) consist on having your main and reserve connected in some way so that when you cut away your main, your reserve pulls out. But that's not standard equipment. Traditionally you will have two handles, one for cut your main and one for reserve deployment (which will deploy like your main using a pilot chute).

Agreed...there's been one occasion that sticking my wing out didn't work quickly...maybe my legs/leg-wing was counteracting; however, in a wingsuit, on numerous occasions, figuring out which way you need to un-twist, and then sticking the proper wing out, then waiting for a half turn, and changing wings to continue momentum in the correct direction, then alternating wings every half turn, does the trick. So much better than trying to kick out.

@anthonycope86377 жыл бұрын
DrGHouse some would argue this as a reason to not have the auto reserve system installed because you don't have time to re stabilize before it opens in this case he is spinning when the reserve deploys causing the line twist others would argue that not having it is a greater risk because it requires more steps and time to properly manually deploy the reserve plus the stupid factor of trying to stabilize and pulling to low to late or not at all....its a personal preference not many cutaways on YT showing a manual deployment of the reserve if you read the comments many divers complain that people have forgotten the fundementals and don't actually pull their reserve cord themselves just in case the cutaway system fails costing them valuable altitude
@DrHouse12387 жыл бұрын
OK yea i got it ,there's no clear answer ,it is just a preference.Although i started reading instructions ,but it is in another language so no point of linking it here,it says "Discard the first incorrectly open dome and without delay open reserve parachute" so it seems like you shouldn't even try to stabilize. By the way excuse my lack of knowledge of appropriate terms, i am trying to translate it the best i can.
@anthonycope86377 жыл бұрын
DrGHouse I don't know all of them myself I just watch a lot of diffrent types of malfunction videos and read a lot of comments and have discussions like this...I speak english but tend to use crap grammar and spelling because I'm a lazy typer and this isn't going to be graded. Look into skyhooks its part of auto deployment cutaway systems and a discussion many divers have of is it useful or not I believe it is a hook that attaches to the pilot chute of the reserve or something like that...anyway yes the proper procedure is ditch the bad chute quick and deploy the reserve but in high altitude situations people make the mistake of restablizing and then this is compounded over time as a habit so when you have no altitude you forget to just cut and deploy
