Okay, we're all a little in love with David Gilmour's guitar solos - and they are incredible - but let's not lose sight of the fact that Rick Wright's keyboards gave Pink Floyd it's quintessential sound. If Gilmour gave PF its voice, Mason gave it a beating heart and Wright gave it a soul. And although I never met him, he was apparently the sweetest guy. RIP.

it may not be many PF fans' favourite album, but it is my favourite. the sound affect, in keep talking, is called a talk box. the guitar is routed through a box of electrics. a cable then goes into the mouth. you don't actually talk into it; the various sounds are created by changing the shape made by the mouth, along with the different notes of the guitar. in the PULSE concert, this section of the song is around half the song. it's incredible and well worth hearing, as all the PULSE concert is

The voice in “Keep Talking” is actually Stephen Hawking, a sample taken from a BT television advertisement, and also appears in “Talkin’ Hawkin” from the last album of PF, The Endless River. It’s amazing how it feels perfectly cohesive those two things combined, and that final solo with a Talk Box is just mesmerising, you can feel how hard he’s trying to communicate, to talk.

When "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" came out after Roger left the band, I was un impressed over all. There was one or two songs that I liked and that was it. So when "The Division Bell" came out I didn't even bother to get a copy. Years went by and I eventually listened to it and loved it! I feel it's certainly the best post Roger album. It seriously beats anything Roger has put out post PF.

I agree that the Division Bell is the best post-Waters Floyd album, but for me, Amused to Death is the best album to come out following the breakup. Again, that's just my preference. I do love the Division Bell. It's just a matter of 1 versus 1a. The depth of Amused to Death just gives it the edge in my opinion. I can't wait to see how Silas reacts to High Hopes!

@@kevinsaleeba2201 It's too bad that Roger couldn't seem to play nice anymore with his former bandmates (especially with Dave). Together they each brought something that made them an unstoppable force in music! To me, Rogers music since leaving PF has missed the mark. I thought the same with A Momentary Lapse of Reason. It took me almost 10 years to bother to listen to The Division Bell because I didn't expect much from it. In 2002 my wife bought me David's live performance DVD in which he played old Floyd tunes and a few that I would later find was on Division Bell, that changed everything! I was stunned the first time I listened to the album and a bit sad it took me so long to listen to.

The voice box operates, if I'm correct, by the guitar player playing notes on the guitar, then the sound travels up a tube that the guitarist shapes with his mouth and throat, giving it the sound of a guitar speaking. Joe Walsh uses it in "Rocky Mountain Way," and Peter Frampton uses it in "Do You Feel Like I Do." Definitely must-listen songs.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

The "Talk Box" is an effect used on instruments that literally pipes the output from the amplifier, through a plastic pipe, to the artists microphone. You just articulate the sounds you want and the shape of your mouth changes the waveform of the sound coming out of the pipe. This is picked up by the microphone and sounds like a voice superimposed onto the instrument.

Hi Silas. First time subscriber. I really enjoy your reactions to Pink Floyd. I think it was a good thing (back in the day) when artists/bands were sometimes allowed the necessary time and space to really develop their signature sound/style (as long as they were "just successful enough" for a record exec to take a chance and "believe" in them), and allow them room to experiment. I appreciate that you really seem to appreciate good musicianship. One of the reasons I decided to subscribe now, was because you've mentioned a few times that you're thinking about moving on to some other artists. Before you go, however, I was hoping you react to two songs. The first, "Mihalis" is an instrumental piece featured on David Gilmour's 1978 debut (self-titled) solo album. You really seem to enjoy a good lead guitar solo. While, not exactly "Floydian" in style, I think you'll like his guitar work on that song. This song is on KZbin. The second song is a special version of "Pigs on the Wing," a two-part song that you've already reacted to on your "Animals" reaction video. This special version of the song was made for the 8-track cartridge release. The 8-track format featured a loop-play function where the end of the recording looped back to the beginning, allowing an album to play continuously without having to turn over the cartridge. To exploit this feature, the special 8-track version of the song linked part 1 and part 2 with a guitar solo (performed by Snowy White, who would later play the guitar solo in live performances on the 1977 Pink Floyd "In the Flesh" Tour. The complete version of the song, including the instrumental bridge, was re-released on White's Goldtop compilation album in 1995. If possible, I was hoping to see your reaction to both songs, and also what your opinion is on Snowy White's style (similar but not the same) vs. David Gilmour's style. Great videos by the way.

For me its very rare that I dislike an album from an Artist/ Group I enjoy. I appreciate the need for music to evolve and the focuses changing, this certainly happens if a band changes members or there is a role change, Different members have there own interests, and if it works well these parts synthesise into the work or sometimes a compromise where there maybe a dedicated track which can be wound into the structure. On some occasions a band changes direction completely due to something happening (commonly a crisis within the band), a few I can name have happened because an album was so successful and mind blowing that the band struggled to find a way to surpass the album or production was so stressful that it broke the members. In order to survive people have to reexamine what they are doing and give each other a break and keep talking. Which Segways into this part of the album nicely.

Now begins the best part of the album in my opinion. The lyrics in "Take it Back" are clever. Apparently, the song talks about a broken relationship but the entire text is a metaphor: the real subject is the climate change, the impact of mankind on the environment and the thesis is that Earth will react violently against us, sooner or later.

I'm a hardcore Floyd fan from 45 years back. I like everything from Dark side of the moon forward. The really really old stuff...the stuff David Gilmour referred to as "psychadelic noodling" is kind of like that, and is a bit too airy for me. Dark side changed everything with it's powerful socially relevant themes. The themes are so instantly identifiable as universal that they still carry the same weight now as then. Amazing.

Great comment and some little known info here. I believe David's backing band on his first solo album was his pre-Pink Floyd band "Joker's Wild". I'm not sure if his brother plays on the album, which he absolutely might, but he is for sure live in studio with him playing rhythm guitar in a rare promo bit for the album. They play 5 or 6 tracks from the album if I remember correctly. It was broadcast in a few different countries. There are some bootlegs floating around of the entire performance to varying degrees of quality. And I agree about it being his best solo album. For me, Rattle That Lock is 2nd, On An Island is 3rd (only because the studio version is a little TOO mellow and serene. I prefer the live performance of the album from the Remember That Night DVD), then About Face which had a couple good tracks but sounded dated when it was released. It felt like David was trying too hard to move with the times rather than letting the music flow naturally.

This album doesn't suck... but after not being to balance the Roger Waters deep controversial themes with Gilmours and Wrights melodic and very feeling musical sensitivities... the result was something like their album "the final cut" and album that I love ..: but recognize it's lack of musical creativity ..:. I think Gilmour had the right idea as to the direction of the band.... but their new bass player, which is David Gilmour's son-in-law by the way has a very 80s edge to the sound... I think it's a solid album but lacks the finesse or just professional attention to detail instead of having Gilmore's wife write the new Pink Floyd lyrics and he just shows no restraint with the guitar. I mean he's my favorite guitar player of all time but he noodles guitar parts like every five seconds someone needed to be there to kind of make this tighter better more polished, finish work then just kind of like pop rock music with the good guitar riffs and mediocre lyrics

Please set camera to manual focus or select your face as focus point, cos it goes out of focus so much and it's annoying. Content is great, so pleae take it as a helpful tip.

First half is ambient filler to me, but side 2 is excellent...a tale of 2 sides.

They're amazing live but they're not just a live band. Studio versions is how the music is released, and how it should be experienced first

@@jacobpaulson23 I agree 100%. Look at the sales of their studio albums compared to their live albums. Silas is not wasting time Rosuobs, he is on a journey of discovery which will include live versions as he dives deeper.
