The Division Bell was a GREAT album, top to bottom. Anyone who says otherwise is probably a PF snob, claiming it's not as grand as previous albums, but the truth is, at the time, it was perfect. It says a lot lyrically and musically, without saying too much, if you know what I mean. I like and appreciate all versions of Pink Floyd and acknowledge they are a little different but that is perfectly fine with me.

Indubitably a top notch album when comes to passion, dedication, execution and overall quality, especially in the second half (the first seems a little too pompous). Probably is also true that, like you said, it was the right album at the right time. But, still indubitably, it looks too much at the past; it tries little to nothing. Seems like a sort of "greatest hits" of Pink Floyd tunes, apart for a couple of fresh and welcomed moments (Coming Back to Life; Keep Talking). Surely one of the great albums of those years, but AMLOR with all its '80 madness, is in my view a more compact record and also a bolder one, like or not.

"High Hopes"...the final track on their final studio album - a truly fitting end to an incredible journey. Here they chronicle their path from obscurity to the heights of stardom, then a quiet (and less frenetic) return to 'normal' lives. The video also provides a heartfelt tribute to their fallen founder Syd Barrett.

When founding member and lead songwriter Roger Waters left the band in 1985, there was a LOT of drama, with many fans choosing sides. I decided I didn't need to. I love Roger's solo work. I love Gilmours version of Floyd and his solo work. You should watch their Live 8 reunion. After 20 something years of feuding, they put it aside to reunite for a one time performance for charity It's a historic performance

Humanly speaking, Gilmour had every reason. Waters acted like a jerk. And still acts as a jerk after all these years. The sad thing is that he hasn't learned anything from his own lyrics. Artistically speaking, I think that we have no need to take sides. We can love both equally.

@@lucapolidori8817 Broken China is a masterpiece. Nobody forget Rick. And, look, there was no faida, or at least that faida was not fueled by both of them. Gilmour is not the person that likes arguments. But certainly doesn't like being mistreated by a sociopath either.

Meanwhile with Waters, his latest album "Is This Really The World We Want" is by far his worst work since Radio K.A.O.S. So his sad attempts at clapback are the pitiful and worthless pale barks of a wounded, dying old dog still licking his scars from the shadows of irrelevance.

"High Hopes" takes the central seat here, for good reasons. Personally I strongly prefer "Sorrow" from the previous album, but I recognize the importance of this classic song. On a side note, "Lost for Words", a bitter dedication to the ex member Roger Waters, is a forgotten gem.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

Most older fans got caught up in the hatefest between Roger and David and chose sides. So MLoR and TDB got a lotta hate from The Roger fans. Newer fans who don't know the backstory have no ill bias towards these albums. Not saying they are lifechanging like the 70s albums, but they are high quality music albums whether it's your taste or not. Hopefully the hateful fans don't spoil your enjoyment of these albums.

I knew you would like high hopes it really is mint. For me the song is about tired old men dreaming of empire and voting for the return to the old ways power inhibiting progress, in some ways it feels very relevant to some of what we are experiencing in the UK. The interesting thing here is the tempo of the song feels like a ringing bell like it is enslaved to it. As for lost for words, the irony is it has a lot of lyrics ;). As you say there is a lot of music out there and many paths to choose, also remember your personal taste and others may not always match but that is fine sometimes the exploration itself is the important thing.

One cool thing about Pink Floyd ...We have 3 versions of Floyd we have Syd Barret as lead Then Roger Waters as Lead then David Gilmour as Lead ..And all 3 versions very very successful and they all brought something different to the table and that is why they will live on for ever...They are not a singles based group they are about the Albums and Live Concerts They do what they want not what a record label tells them what they want..They never gave up on the Fans Like Led Zep and the Beatles did....And with the Division Bell and the Pulse tour they went out on top of there game a bowed out with grace...Now they did do one more Album after Division Bell and that is the Endless River ..But do not listen to it until you have listend to all Floyd over and over and understand them...And then listen to Endless River...Its is for the most part a Audio Biography of Pink Floyds carrier if you know what to listen for....This album is only for a true Floydian to rap your ears around....Enjoy your journey threw time and space and where Floyd will take you mind to...Welcome to Machine of PINK FLOYD...And do check out David Gilmour and Roger Waters solo works out ....For me Roger leaving was for the best cuz now i have 2 Pink Floyds to listen to hope you understand what i mean...

@@marcelliott1111 words are fun to play with! But then, I’m a word nerd. I think the pulchritude (based on the Latin for beautiful) has almost exclusively been used to describe beauty in a woman. It would sound out of place even describing a beautiful landscape. A pulchritudinous mountain or river? Weird. There’s almost a whiff of voluptuousness to the word. But the word beauty I think could stretch through time So to me DSOTM is not pulchritudinous. Physical not, as the record or cd is not beautiful. Emotionally exquisite perhaps? Emotionally pulchritudinous? No. Sonically pulchritudinous? Maybe…sure…at a stretch. Frankly, I’ve just never heard the word applied except to a woman. And I’m 75. Now, of course, you rarely hear it at all because our rich heritage of vocabulary in English has declined so much. They’ve probably removed pulchritude from the SAT’s because it’s too hard. But here’s a thought about time: Nostalgia ..a mixture of happiness, sadness, loss, grief, wistfulness, gratefulness, impossible yearning. A very human emotion expressed so well in High Hopes It is ineffably human. And I think, often sadly beautiful. So that binds a beautiful emotion with time. Have I lost you completely? Just some musings. Would love your thoughts but completely understand if you’re thinking “hell no, get me away from this woman” 😉 PS. On second thought, I think you could use that word for a knockout male. I mean, a younger Robert Plant was most definitely pulchritudinous! 😁

at the end of the song David is playing lap steel guitar which means a guitar you can play on your lap but usually it’s on a mounted table in concert and you have to see him play it live it’s amazing. The folk that don't like it, are the hardcore Roger Waters fans. Because it has no Waters influence and isn't your typical Pink Floyd album. Some folk like that, because they think Roger was just constantly going over the same 'war' kinda theme with a lot of the albums. But others aren't so keen on him not being involved because this album doesn't flow together seamlessly like the others, where it tells a story like a book.

I know how you have other music to react to, and you haven’t yet dived into early Pink Floyd or The Final Cut, but when you do “Floyd” again I would suggest continuing to move forward first. David Gilmour’s later solo work. He was always a guitar God but once he started wearing Jimi Hendrix’s guitar strap (with the Xs), he somehow went next level for me. On and Island and Rattle That Lock were both great albums, but rather than listening to the albums, I suggest doing his live performances of those songs. For On an Island, he performa the entire album pretty much in its entirety (two live videos, one called Remember That Night, and another live in Gdnask). And for Rattle That Lock, live in Pompeii in 2016. Those live performance are just amazing and his guitar work is among the best he’s ever done. I think you will enjoy seeing the close-ups of him playing the strings. Then when you finish with those, go back and hit the earlier Floyd that you haven’t reacted to yet. My suggestion anyway

NOT that I’m trying to get you away from PF, but if you’re looking for another great group with a magnificent guitarist, may I suggest Dire Straits “Sultans of Swing?” I recommend doing the audio version first, then the same song live at the “Alchemy” Concert (the extended guitar solo at the live gig, will blow your mind) Trust me, you’ll love them, but until then, more PF Please.

High Hopes is in the top 5 or so of my personal favorites from Pink Floyd. I see you enjoyed this but I suggest to you that you should listen to the Pulse version or the David Gilmour live at Gdansk version. But I'll just give you prior warning........You will lose your shit when you listen. Far better versions imo.

I don't like the Floyd without Roger Waters very much, but TDB is definitely a great album and High Hopes for sure one of the best songs ever written! Maybe you could do some legendary old PF stuff, like Interstellar Overdrive, (Ufo version), or Careful with that axe live at Brighton dome 72, or Set the controls for the heart of the sun. I promise, you will not be disappointed!

It is so much better than the Waters dominated disaster The Final Cut.

@@paulnolan4971 I actually listened to it again last week and it was just as bad as I remembered it. If it didn't say Pink Floyd on the sleeve I doubt I would even have it in my collection. Thankfully, it was The Final Moan as far as Roger Waters was concerned.

@@79BlackRose To appreciate music it has to resonate with something within us. The final cut is probably the most depressed album ever, but if you are familiar with the darker sides of life, you will be deeply moved by it. I think that many people are afraid of the feelings that might become stirred up, that might be another reason why many people don't like it. For me, it was my first record ever at age 11, and I loved it from the start!

@@m.jodeit6935 Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with the dark sides of life. I think I could cope with the lyrical content if there was some musical antidote to it all, such as on Animals (my second favourite album of theirs). But Roger bludgeoned everyone else to such an extent that their spirit and their contributions were severely affected.

Shame you didn't or couldn't do the videos. 'lost for words " another song about Roger if you like. "high Hopes " the transition from acoustic to slide is amazing. Actually these songs at "pulse 1994 " are better. Their live shows are far better than studio or Cd's recording.

I say stick with Floyd a bit longer before you move on. Go back to the beginning. 1st album Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Find out how all this magic happened. I'm sure you'll get to Pompeii eventually. However if you're moving on and guitar is what you're looking for check out Van Halen.

I think you've missed out on The Final Cut, and that it is worth a listen for sure. It is the last Floyd album with Roger, and was released after The Wall, and before A Momentary Lapse of Reason. It is essentially a Roger Waters solo album, and it will serve as an opportunity to compare post-Roger Pink Floyd, and post-Floyd Roger Waters. Even though it's practically a Roger Waters solo album it comes with the bonus of some Gilmour guitar solos, and a bit of Gilmour's vocals. It's a good opportunity to see what each 'side' brought to the band now that you've heard Floyd without Roger.

Division Bell is a great album. I enjoy the music from David Gilmour so much more than Roger Waters. Waters keeps playing the wall and that stupid Final Cut for his whole life. Anything new by him I'm sure is just a miserable self loathing song. Always crying about his father.

Roger Waters on Pink Floyd after he left the band: "With all due respect to the people who went out and bought those records, they are just rubbish. Particularly The Division Bell; it's just nonsense from beginning to end. A Momentary Lapse of Reason had a couple of really nice tunes on it that, had I still been in the band, those chord sequences and melodies would have been made it onto a record that I was involved in. But conceptually and lyrically, it's just rubbish, partly because it's not true. It's like, "Let's try and write songs that sound as if they're Pink Floyd and make records that sound like Pink Floyd records."
