What an Album, the main thing with Queen is they were all songwriters and all members wrote hits. They were the first band to be indoctrinated into the songwriters Hall of Fame. The “No Synthesizers!” liner note is featured on the back of this album - as first featured on their second album, Queen II (1974), up to their fifth album, A Day at the Races (1976) - wasn’t necessarily about Queen disliking synths per se. When asked about their unique liner note, Queen’s drummer Roger Taylor once stated: “A lot of reviewers in England - I can quote one, Chris Welch in the Melody Maker, a paper famous for its inaccuracy, I might add - said, "Great use of synthesizers here!" and of course it was all guitar, and that got up our noses quite a lot" In essence, the “No Synthesizers!” liner note repeatedly used by Queen was actually the band proudly stating, “The amazing sounds you hear on this album were created by our genius guitarist. We don’t need synths, we’ve got Brian May!” :)

My first Queen album, I bought it for "Killer Queen" but ended up playing "Brighton Rock" repeatedly before finishing my first listen. My poor Panasonic stereo needed upgrading after that. Great choice, Silas. Remember no synthesizers.

Roger Taylor, the drummer, sang Tenement Funster. He was good enough to front his own band. Great voice for the harder songs they did. You need to check out "Modern Times Rock & Roll" from Queen 1 (their debut album), or just do the whole album. It's _FIRE!!_ ❤‍🔥 Also, "News of the World" is my favorite album by them. If Queen 1 is fire, News of the World is _RADIOACTIVE!!!_ ☢

Yep - both Roger and Brian could have fronted their own bands vocally.. but the collaboration with the four was so incredible... they all recognized it...

Seeing Brian May do the featured guitar section of "Brighton Rock" live around 1976 was one of my better concert moments...I'm guessing he had some sort of tape delay effect that allowed him to reproduce it on stage...

Hey Silas from Ned in Spain. Nice to see getting into some class-sick Queen. The first time I heard this first tune, Brighton Rock, was when it was released in 1974 on the old NYC WNEW FM. I already thought it was mind blowing but then I found out that all the multiple guitar work was Brian May layering melodies and harmonies by running an echoplex tape machine through a bunch of Vox AC 30 amps which he could also do live. In my opinion , all of their albums from Queen 1 up to News of the World are absolutely essential.

Really enjoyed your reaction Silas! This is an amazing LP, as are Queen I and Queen II, and you should react to those soon! Brighton Rock features one of the most under appreciated guitar solos of all time imo, and Tenement Funster to Lily of the Valley sound fantastic when played together without interruption. Drummer Roger Taylor is the vocalist on his song "Teement Funster" giving Freddie a break! Personally I can hardly wait for your reaction to "She Makes Me" and both versions of "In The Lap of the Gods"! Greatness awaits you!!!

Silas, that's great you are tackling classic Queen, Sheer Heart Attack is one of the all-time greats! You may want to group together next "Now I'm Here, In The Lap Of The.Gods... Stone Cold Crazy" you may want to add in "Dear Friends" and "Misfire" as they are pretty short. Lastly, after this album listen, you really should do the entire album of "Queen II" , mind blowing!

I bought Queen 1 and 2 after seeing them in concert and then Sheer Heart Attack later in the same year. SHA is my favourite Queen album. I had to click on this video just to see your reaction to Brighton Rock. ha ha!

Brighton is a city on the NW coast of England which has a pier specifically for the use of fun fair rides and games. Hence the carnival music at the beginning. 'Brighton Rock' one of my top 5 Queen tracks. 'Tenement Funster' another top track sung by drummer Roger Taylor. Roger usually sang his compositions. Brian May too mostly but John Deacon always let Fred sing his. This album is by far my fav Queen album.

Thanks, Silas! Brighton Rock is such a Brian song.. but Freddie's vocals are also amazing... hope you get the lyrics.. Either Brian or Roger could have done front vocals for a band... but they chose the best option - the four-some that has never been topped! All of the early Queen albums transitioned from song to song without "space".. no matter how diverse... (Flick was the first "diss" of a manager.. later on, they did Death on Two Legs... lesson: don't piss off Freddie! lol) appreciate your reaction...

The songs, Brighton Rock and Stone Cold Crazy showed that Brian May could easily compete with the likes of Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmore, Eric Clapton and Alvin Lee. Queen has always been my favorite rock band (after The Beatles) since about 1973 after I heard their debut album owned by my older brother. The first Queen album I bought was "A Day at the Races" for their "Tie Your Mother Down" song.

I was fortunate enough to see Queen the very first time they toured the US. I've been a diehard fan ever since. Their first three albums are incredible. Sheer Heart Attack is my favorite. Innuendo, one of their last, is amazing as well.
