As a peruvian who watched this unfold in real time there's a few things you missed. 1. Brian was Ruth ex, he started to harras her for the money the moment the show ended, even when she still hadn't received the money. 2. He paid a kid to called him when Ruth get off the bus that take her home, he kidnapped her with the help from his uncle and beat her in his mototaxi, police found blood there. 3. He drugged her so she would give him her bank account info, she didn't, so they SA her and torture her . 3. They killed her and pretend to be a crime of passion bc at the time there wasn't a law for feminicio, and crime of passion got less time. 4. He indeed was no longer his bf, but been called a cachudo on newspapers and tv (guy who was cheated on) played a part on his ego. 5. Ruth's sister said that the show knew a lot of the answers were false, but still told Ruth to tell them for rating.

I didn't know about #5 so that's even worse because they're putting her in even more danger. This was the first ever episode of the show (it's since been canceled but after what happened to Ruth they only asked high-profile people (idk how to explain it but basically not regular citizens) to come as guests) and while yes, some of the issues were huge oversights, the show basically telling her to lie/exaggerate is a blatant disregard to her safety

She tricked him into telling her to go up to her house that it was him. Your mother's birthday and if you could accompany him at the same time to celebrate the winnings. His mother, as we know, was on the first floor when Ruth arrived and greeted her. 2-Brayan, according to the motorcycle taxi drivers in the area, he already knew that Ruth worked in that field and that he was a pimp, he encouraged Ruth to enter that environment. 3-The sentences of the uncle and Brayan were lowered a few years ago. And I understand very well why Ruth did it and I don't blame her. I hope her family is well now.

This had me glued to my seat in anticipation the entire time though. Genuine props, your skill and ability as a narrator and story teller came through loud and clear with this episode. You are no one trick pony riding the true crime wave. The rawness of the family and boyfriend's and even the audience's emotional turmoil and state I felt like I was getting pieces of that emotional roller coaster. You and the team are killing it 💯

excuse me if i have this wrong but how are stories of real life people getting murdered, harassed, brutalized, tortured, assaulted in multiple ways, etc grounds for being "relaxing background noise"? again, i mean no hate in any way. unless you mean her other channel where she turns books into podcasts, i disagree. idk the case but please do not dehumanize these tragic stories and deem them simple entertainment (and i'm sorry if that wasn't what you were doing and i misunderstood your comment, and i really do not mean this in any negative way, + i agree about her story-telling skills). have a good day
@dinenpine5 ай бұрын
@@celine2670 hi. So my statement wasn't intended to say "I particularly like hearing about horrific things happening to people." Of course I do not and these are tragic things that happened to human beings with loved ones and are not just random statistics in a crime report. A better way to probably explain it is I also like to read / listen to books on things like economics and statistics and historical events in finance. The problem with these are they are terrible for "enjoyable background noise" because there are often a lot of particularly detailed things that need to be picked up on and thoroughly heard and understood that relate what's coming up next up in the book. Trying to listen to one of those audiobooks while doing something else that slightly takes away your attention at times generally ends up with me rewinding a section and re listening to it again multiple times trying to pick up the concept or topic while being in the background of whatever else I'm doing (like say work). Plus those kinds of things are generally a lot more "dry" and less engaging so it requires more focus to kinda get something out of listening to it in the background. I more or less gave up on listening to those for "background noise" cause they can't really sit in the "background". It just makes for a shitty listening experience and me doing shittier at whatever task I'm doing while listening. On the other hand, channels like Rotten Mango, Scary Interesting, Mr. Ballen, etc. or other things I'd listen to like Joe Rogan or Theo Von podcasts are far better for "enjoyable background noise." They're more engaging cause they're telling stories versus hearing something like "the value of a security can be determined by the calculated current value of the future cash flows. Here is a basic example of a DCF model......Often this is not exhibited by real life prices. Comparisons of Price to Earnings Ratio of companies in the same industry is another method of blah blah blah....". My mind can drone in and out of listening to a story or casual podcast conversation without really missing a whole lot. You can listen to a story and even missing a part here of there you can still generally follow along. I can't really listen to something that's like "here are these graphs and equations for examples" and miss it and comprehend something a couple pages later. Anyway this is getting hella long but the gist is some things I can drone out and do something else (work, run, wash dishes, whatever) and follow along easily and enjoy. Not all of these are true crime podcasts. Other things I absolutely cannot listen to as background noise.

Stephanie, hi. There's a statement you said that in Peru prostitution is legal, actually it's in a gray area, because there is no law stating that it's a crime in our constitution ("ok" in law but no for the society), but there's no law that recognized it as a professional occupation, which is why they are often exploited by gangs or mafias and end up as victims
@rezhaadriantanuharja33898 ай бұрын
Does Peru’s law recognize self-employment as a miscellaneous service provider? Then prostitution probably goes under this category, and therefore, is a legal occupation. Pretty sure the law does not extensively list all possible professional occupations on earth. Not ok by society does not make something illegal, by definition
@dunnoknowthiscat8 ай бұрын
@@rezhaadriantanuharja3389Actually, prostitution isn't looked like a self-employment type of job in Peru, it's more like a voluntary act to work in this type of field that's why it isn't included as a legal occupation. And about the illegal part, my mistake, what I mean is that peruvian society stigmatize prostitution that's why the question they made of her had a big impact.

True but legalized sex workers still get exploited, abused and menaced into non consensual acts. Just because it’s legalized doesn’t make it perfect and to be blunt sex work is all around physically and emotionally draining and simply not good for any party involved, no matter how you spin it or how it looks from the outside/on social media. We as a society would be better off working on a grass root level against it, creating opportunities where young women don’t need to turn to those types of jobs and that type of consumption isn’t promoted.

Supposedly, a polygraph can be beaten by getting worked up during the “baseline” questions such as your name. Polygraphs measure things like heart rate and breathing, which probably could be affected by stepping on a thumbtack. You have to have either zero response to any question (like a sociopath) or the same reaction to every question. If you seem nervous/sweaty while answering your name, they won’t think you’re lying when you’re nervous/sweaty from the difficult questions.

Polygraphs don't stand up in court because they can also show that you are lying when you are not. They go both ways. Someone can beat a polygraph by say, stepping on a thumb tack, but on the flip side, If someone is nervous, that can cause it to say they are lying even If they are not. If someone tells a lie, but completely believe that lie, they will pass. There's no way of knowing what is really the truth or lie, believed or not believed, and no way of knowing exactly what the lie is(part of the question, or the answer itself). This is why nowadays they combine the polygraph with observations of body movement and facial expressions and then link those with evidence they have. A polygraph on its own only shows what makes someone nervous, but not why.

@@damien678 Reasons why nobody should ever take a polygraph as truth. Even the guy who invented it hated that it was used with any level of seriousness. There are many examples of serial killers passing them, and many examples of innocent people failing them. They don't tell truths, yet give others a reason to determine what a lie is, and all it takes is a small amount of bias for it to be used as confirmation.

And as I was just saying as well it will show you are truthful if you believe something to be true. It doesn’t mean that it’s actually true. I cannot believe how many people don’t grasp that concept. I'm Peruvian and I was around Ruth's age when this happened. It was shocking to hear about the show when she disappeared but I don't remember anyone on any news network reporting on the case as "the prostitute" from the show. Her name became extremely well known and we all knew her as the first contestant of the show. I reviewed the show notes looking for any evidence that pointed that out but could find anything. What actually happened was that some everyday people did call her like that even after she passed away. Everyday Peruvians with no compassion were that callous, but that didn't happen on the news, at least that didn't happen in Peruvian news.
@it.comes.around8 ай бұрын
Thank you for commenting this. Hearing her say that in English wasn’t so bad, but when I said it out loud in Spanish, I had to pause and process it, because even if it’s a bad word in English, it just feels so much worse in Spanish and I can’t see a lot of news sources using it, particularly any reputable ones.
@dunnoknowthiscat8 ай бұрын
Exactly! I was in high school when I saw the news, but I know that most of the news in tv, online and some newspapers reporting the case as the first winner of the show but not "the prostitute", maybe a couple of the 'chicha' newspapers that create big headlines as bait to buy and read their side of the story

Thank you!! I was 19 when this came out and EVERYONE and their mother knew her name! Maybe a chicha newspaper called her ‘The prostitute’ but I never saw it and it wasn’t on tv. I couldn’t find anything either. Also, I know she’s a victim of a horrible crime but when the show came out everyone thought she was awful, not for the sex thing but because she was so embarrassed of her parents. She repeatedly stated how they were poor and ignorant, how she deserved so much more and their hard work was not enough so she had to dance at a nightclub to get more stuff. It was bad. So there was a lot of people saying she deserved it because of her greed. It was an awful case all around.
@DD-hp9vo8 ай бұрын
But honestly wat was the expectation? She herself admitted to this, she said yes she participated in prostitution. Aside from this she admitted to other questionable choices regarding other forms of sex work - i.e. dancing/stripping in a nightclub known to offer sex services in Peru. So why is it offensive, what was the expectation if she WILLINGLY admitted to this on such a public platform.

Hi Stephanie! it would be great if you uncovered the case of Saltanat Nukenova, which is currently taking place in Kazakhstan. An ex minister of economy Kuandyk Bishimbayev brutally unalived his wife at the restaurant, and now he’s pleading not guilty in court. This case is very important for Kazakhstan’s situation with woman rights, and overall the world should know about this awful event, because we need to draw attention to it so that Bishimbayev gets punished for what he did by the law! If we don’t talk about this enough, the court will get corrupted and they will let him free. I really love your content and I think your platform would be a great way to share this case with the outer world. Thank you!

Peruvian here! I watched this show when it aired. It really seemed very weird to me when the show brought just a “regular” person for the show because they would normally have very famous guests over. However this special case was very shocking. If you guys ever watch the show you can see her body language, the way she speaks and holds herself she seems to have a good heart and be a very genuine person which keeps you hooked to watch the full show. Feminicide has been and still is a really bad problem in Peru. Besides Feminicide, Peru is a very VERY conservative country and still is: People will look down on you if you divorce your partner (it doesn’t matter if they hit you or if they cheated on you the woman will always look bad), people will judge you if you are not either catholic or Christian, if your kids don’t go to a good school or college, if you are poor, if you look like a “cholo”, if you opted to not be straight, if you don’t have a good job, racism and classism on top of that. This is very sad but the truth. I love my country but this is part of the dark side of this country. I also don’t live in Peru anymore, I love love my country and I am deeply sad because I am a woman and I am very vocal on what makes me uncomfortable and I know this is something that many men or just people over there won’t ever be able to handle over there.

She could’ve had a regular job (like one at a call center). And even if she did it for good reasons, it was always a bad idea to go on a show like this where it would not only shame her, but her entire family. It’s up to her what she does with her own life, but now she’s ruining her parents life, reputations, and business as well. That’s not okay or understandable. Don’t misunderstand me, I do have empathy for her and I definitely think she didn’t deserve to have any sort of harm come to her, but bottom line is, don’t equate what she did with someone being forced to participate in bad things to literally survive.
