3:15 As a note, birth control pills can also be used to treat other things besides preventing pregnancy. So taking away someone's meds that you don't approve of for their main / best known use can also end up seriously harming them since you don't know their medical needs.

I saw this movie once, but it stuck with me and it took me a while to figure out why it was so memorable. But I realized that its fascinating because of how pretty and simple her dreams and desires are. She is literally given all the power in the universe without any limitations and the only things she wants are the popular boy and cool cloth. That is the entire scope of all her desires. It never even occurred to her to want anything more. And I wasnt angry at her, instead I was fascinated and maybe even a little jealous of her simplicity.

I grew up in the '80s and I never heard of this mess of a movie. That being said, I did have a few teachers who were always mad at me for knowing more than them. And often told me that I "made other kids feel bad" by being smart and that I needed to "slow down so others can keep up." So, that happens. I don't know if it's still true but when I was a kid in the '80s there was this big push in my school for everyone to be on the "same level." Think of the story of Harrison Bergeron, where they have the device in the father's head to keep him from being able to think because he was smart. So smart kids got shamed. (Yet athletically gifted kids were praised, not told to intentionally mess up so those of us not good as sports could keep up with them.) Also - DICK SARGENT! The father in this is Darrin from Bewitched!
@MegaMagicdog
@MegaMagicdog 5 жыл бұрын
i grew up in the 80s too and encountered the same thing! Not from all my teachers, but that desire for "equality" did permeate. In fact, it's far worse now than ever! If you have kids, home school them! That way they can truly be themselves and not be the square pegs of greatness forced into a round hole of mediocrity.

@@mastermarkus5307 That is America's problem in a nutshell. Other countries (esp. China/Japan/Korea) actually educate not necessarily indoctrinate. We need to get back to basics. Public schools encourage subjugation and humiliation. I see examples of it all the time.
@Nocturnalux
@Nocturnalux 5 жыл бұрын
@@MegaMagicdog Japan and Korea have terribly high suicide rates among teens and that's because their school system is the very definition of humiliation and subjugation. Extreme bullying- in which the teachers often play a part for extra horror- coupled with extremely strict academics in which you basically have to learn by route and had better not dare voice an opinion do not a good system make. To be fair, when it comes to the sciences and mathematics, those countries are indeed well above the US (then again, the US does very poorly overall) and if one is to take just learning facts, those countries are very obviously doing a much better job. But this should not be the sole deciding factor. I know of biracial kids in Japan who were forced to dye their fair hair black because 'everyone else's hair is black'. That's the very definition of stifling any kind of an actual personality. In all honesty, 99% of American kids would not survive a term in a Japanese high school. They'd be devoured. I'm in no way saying the American system is good, it's a mess that makes my European self horrified, but rest assured Japan and Korea are hardly good examples of how to teach children. You'll get kids with very high grades killing themselves if their grades drop a bit, kids bullied into killing themselves, school uniforms that shame bigger girls...the list goes on. You need balance in all things and Korea and Japan are entirely lacking in this regard.

The sad thing is that this movie could’ve been good if the girl had suffered actual consequences for every time she used her magic instead of just having everyone just be all like “Huh. Weird. Two things. First I have never once thought of this as a musical. I mean yeah now that you mention it it probably qualifies. but it shouldn't. And second, at this point in the 80s a fifteen year old living in the suburbs on their bike was like a twenty year old with a car. Nobody would have thought twice about it.
