Ok, I hate to keep harping on this but my God, if it was the other way around, this wouldn't be funny in the slightest (probably would be a Lifetime movie). Why does Hollywood downplay female-on-male violence to the point where it's seen as comedic? It's not funny, it's not quirky, it's not "lucky", it's disturbing. I've seen it happen in real life and the trauma is real. It's irritating and downright offensive and it makes me sick... But that out of the way, I love this review 💟 Great job as always!

@warron247 жыл бұрын
Female on male violence CAN be comedic. For that matter male on female violence can be comedic too. It's all in the execution. The problem with this movie isn't the basic premise or the gender roles, it's just that the movie is too lightweight and fluffy to embrace the dark humor that could have made the premise work. Imagine if this was done with a tone more like an "It's Always Sunny..." episode. In fact some users have pointed out that a comedy exists with a VERY similar premise with the gender roles reversed called Buffalo '66. I've never seen it but it is apparently well liked.

I’ll give a pass to While You We’re Sleeping because that was more of a misunderstanding on the unconscious man’s family side and Sandra Bullock’s character had no family and was lonely and wanted to feel some sense of family.

They did the gender reverse version of the 'romantic kidnapping' scenario back in the 70s. It was called "Sweet Hostage", starring Linda Blair and Martin Sheen. It's... incredibly questionable. I only bring this up because it was a favorite of my mother's back in high school, and when she saw the promo for Holiday in Handcuffs she went "So it's a 'Sweet Hostage' Christmas? Oh, man, I've got to see this..." We both deeply regretted her enthusiasm.
@sholem_bond Жыл бұрын
Tbh, I've found that whenever people say "imagine if the genders were switched"... there's always some example of media in which the genders were switched and despite that, no one realized how ill-advised it was (although "Sweet Hostage" did take place back in the 70s, at least).

This movie has been etched into my brain from now on. My best friend made me watch it with her, and at the time (4 years ago!) we started to become friends so I would entice her to show me her weird fascination that she had (and still has) for Christmas movies around the holidays. We watched it on netflixs and honestly it was so boring, a movie to entertain yourself when you're bored. But for some reason just the thought of the movie pops in my brain as the best bonding that made us best friends. We even mock the end by saying, "Omg he didn't press charges!" to this day. So yeah an odd film, but one that stay with you for some weird reason?

5:14-5:21 I think this movie _might_ work in a _so-bizarre-it’s-good_ way if this turned out to be the _Cat-Woman_ movie we wanted. Like, imagine Selina Kyle left Gotham and got plastic surgery (and changes her voice in public) to avoid incrimination and start her life over to an extent, but this sequence of misfortunes causes her to snap and revert to her cat burglar ways and even use her normal voice (like Melissa Joan Hart uses her voice prior and when Selina’s pretending to be mild and polite but other times Michelle Pfeiffer voices over Hart mouthing the words like in _Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer)._ It _wouldn’t_ be a masterpiece, but at least it would make more sense for Melissa Joan Hart’s character to leap into kidnapping and it would be a better _Cat-Woman_ movie than the ‘04 version.
