I’m not an OB-4 hater by any means…I think you can come up with some very interesting textures and glitchy loops/soundscapes, and it’s a really cool idea especially in the realm of “lo-fi”. I've owned one for a while - it sounds great, I've never once been concerned about the battery life, it's always had a ton of juice in it and with the motorized volume and tape scrubber, I now want every device I own with encoders to be motorized... Also - the physical Ortho Remote is a great companion to it! Zero regrets on the purchase and I use it way more than expected. If anything, finding a jazz station, slowing it down to .8x speed and it's just bliss!

Also the "ambient playlist" you mention at 9:55 is the karma disk mode. Emulates a mantra box and you can cycle through 30 different chants which are just repeating loops. The first mode in the ambient mode which splashes the radio full of reverb and other tricks.

Fun fact: TE made a series called frekvens for IKEA. That's actually how I found out about them in the first place. TE isn't an instrument company by heart, although they have been making them, their main idea is interactive art basically. Something you can actually use and enjoy and also look good. But I guess music was something that nobody was seeing as an art piece that actually makes music, and make music well with it. Also, from what I understand, a lot of their sounds came from Reasons factory synths and I think a few from ableton as well. Jakob Haq programmed the sounds for the pocket operators. He has a youtube channel called haqattaq or something like that. Pretty cool stuff.

I'm sure somebody pointed this out before but regarding the lack of a line out, it's possible there was some legal issue with it being mainly used as a radio, there would be some restriction against giving users the ability to easily record and save the radio stream via line out. That being said, you OP-1 has a radio feature and a line out, the only difference I can think is maybe because radio is the main feature (or one of the main features) of the OB-4 (and it's marketed as a radio), where the OP-1 radio is kind of a background feature and it's marketed as a synth. Just some thoughts, we know TE is not usually like this so there must be a reason.
@LiamKillen

I don't think it was a legality thing- they just made a statement and went with it IMO!
@aschen

I would imagine having a line out or USB to get project audio would probably fall under the same thing as just recording music from the radio digitally or on tape, something devices have been able to do for decades. The ability to sample and manipulate the sound further strips it, because you are creating something new
@bradydansmith

Great video man and great music! I just wanted to point out that when you were scrubbing the tape after activating ambient mode it was setting the sleep timer for the OB-4 to turn off.. I made this mistake for the first week before I got my head around it. The trick is to wait a few seconds, after activating ambient mode, before scrubbing. One more thing.. the tape table on its own doesn’t change the amount of ambience it changes the algorithm. I believe 50% is essentially the zero point, +100 to the right is Algorithm A intensity +100 to the left is Algorithm B intensity I’m just guessing as TE are charmingly vague about this stuff. I’m sure you know this already :) The Dry/Wet amount is set by holding down input then adjusting the tape table. Once again, great video and great musics

I have the sp 404 II, a zoom h1n, and a pair of Sony MDR 7506. I was thinking this might be the ultimate way of 'avoiding' buying regular studio monitors (as i'm currently based in vietnam, and with moving around a lot, i'm not that into buying/selling ok studio gear etc.) Sampling local radio station broadcasts (or evening getting into pirate broadcasting) seems like a lot of potential fun). The one big drawback, or even fear, is jamming with latency. Just wondering how your getting on with that, or if hopefully, there's some solution for this. Many thanks. B

Triggered by the lack of output jack. Are outputs jacks THAT troubling for manufacturers? Lol. As a speaker, it sounds great, and it's loud. Back to using it as an instrument, you can do similar drone effects using Eurorack modules like Mutable Instruments Clouds or any number of Make Noise modules. I actually think a small Eurorack setup would be a better use of money, personally, and that's something I never thought I'd say. Dope tunes as always, fella.

@@LiamKillen I bought the OP-4 and it does sound absolutely amazing. Considering it’s size you cannot expect super low and huge base, but the base is still really good! The sound is very clear and balanced, luxurious I would say. So, the sound, combined with the portability and looks makes it definitely worthwhile.
