I'll never forget when I got the NES version: I was getting out of school, my mom picked me up and asked if I wanted pizza for dinner, i said sure but why, then she handed me the game and said "to go along with this!" Great times, great game. Oh, and great video! :)

My cousins had the NES version and we played the hell out of it when I was over. Especially when I got the Nintendo Power with the cheat codes (I still remember the 10 lives & stage select code!) That's what I think of most when I think of that game. A pure nostalgic memory. Same story with Mega Man 2. I'm one of the lucky ones who managed to get the Xbox Live version when it was available. I'll probably never get rid of my 360 for that reason.

Well that wasn't too uncommon for the console versions to have more to them, which was done in order to make up for system limitations when it came to graphics, sound, and general gameplay, etc. Same was also the case with Turtles In Time for the Super Nintendo, which had the extra Techodrome level not featured in the arcade. That along with a new final stage for Golden Axe on the Sega Genesis for that matter as other examples also.

Good stuff as always Eric. The NES port is a damn impressive one. Not many scrolling beat'em'ups survived the translation to the NES intact but TMNT was a smartly done one. I was looking at getting the NES version recently and then decided I'd rather eat and pay bills. All the TMNT games for the NES go for a fair bit in the UK. Didn't realise the XBLA version had been delisted. I've got that luckily. I'm pretty sure we played it on a stream once. Might be worth doing a proper LP of it some day.

It would be a cool one to cover cos the actual arcade version has never been released for home consoles. This is one of the best beat em ups of all time i think. Me and my brother used to play this so much and it's probably one of our most played nes games. I never really was a huge arcade fan growing up so i never understood the people that always said arcade was better. For me personally the way i looked at it was i never even noticed the differences in how much better arcade versions looked back then and i always had all the consoles growing up so i just figured why would a spend my hard earned quarters playing on an arcade when i can go home and play as much as i want for free. With the side by side comparisons i think i actually prefer the nes music over the arcade. Something about the NES sound is just PERFECT for video games imo. The snes is my favorite console ever and even i think the nes has the best music.

I loved this game and when it released I did my very first game trade in ever. I remember having a Sega Genesis at the time (launch of 89) and was pissed that it was not on the Genesis. I literally traded a Sega Genesis game in for TMNT and the clerk thought I was crazy. I was like 10 years old (or was I 9, cant remember), what do you want from me.;) He even told me I was dumb and tried to talk my mother into either stopping me or paying for it herself. She wanted me to learn to make my own decisions and accept them if they were less than ideal. Thankfully, this game was such a watershed moment, one last Wow factor before putting the old 8-bit hardware down for the last time (I still have one and yes I still play but you get it...). What really struck me about the Nes Ninja Turtles Arcade game was the fire at the beginning and how truly good it looked. Lastly, I totally disagree with you on the beat em' up's dying quip. We just got Streets of Rage, Final Fight was killing it in the arcades and dont forget The Simpsons Arcade as well. Following that we got Streets of Rage 2 (best beat em up ever made), Final Fight on the Snes and even better- the Sega CD. Lets not forget Nintendo's excellent rendition of Knights of the Round or Sega's Golden Axe series that was like Streets of Rage ahead of its class. If Sega or Nintendo was not your bag, SNK was rocking some excellent beat em' ups like Mutation Nation (okay but pretty for its time), Burning Fight (terrible), Robo Army(decent), Super Spy (fantastic), Crossed Swords (excellent), and the amazing Sengoku series (especially 3). I think the beat em' up genre was finally leaving that small River City Ransom/Double Dragon beat em' ups with Bad Dudes as a transition to characters that were not squat 8-bit looking games of the past generation. We were leaving the 8-bit generation as fast as we could for better and brighter things wether Nintendo wanted us to or not (Nintendo had no plans to move foward and were happy to let us lament in 8-bit land for another 4 years, thereby holding back progress).

Well, you also have to consider that a. the arcade software that Konami was using was essentially 16-bit and the NES was 8-bit and Nintendo software honestly was a bit more limited that the Konami arcade cabinet and b. because of this, the arcade game had essentially more room for more sprites, better details in everything, and the ability to far surpass the capabilities for voices on the NES, which very few, if any, NES games had voices in them, let alone GOOD quality voices in the game, Game vs Game. Also, anyone that likes the MSDOS port of TMNT is a moron that should be pimp slapped so hard that Adam and Eve would feel the impact on both of their faces throughout time and space. Finally, although the arcade game was hard, the Nintendo port, to its credit, actually had NEW bosses, enemies, stages, and themes, not to mention that the stages in the NES port were actually LONGER than its arcade counterpart. Now if Konami or whoever could do so, then I would love for there to be a special commemorative version of the game in which the things from the NES version of the game were added to the original arcade game and all of that was done in 16-bit, along with another all new stage where The Rat King would be a boss, namely, an underground stage that was right before the Technodrome.

dude, super cool how you showed both levels compared at 5:56. good work. Nice video, although i think i'd argue that the NES port didn't do thaaaat great of a job. I remember at the time of release i was so stoked about the arcade game coming to the NES as that was my favorite arcade game but playing it for that "all tmnt game" review i did a few years ago it just feels lacking by comparison... but that's just in my opinion. So are we gonna see Turtles in Time get the same treatment?
@GamevsGame8 жыл бұрын
thanks Dubs! yeah its definitely scaled down, but that's to be expected for the NES and one of the things Sega would push that they're games were more arcadey. i don't mind, i think they did the NES port really smart. and don't you worry, i've definitely got plans for Turtles in Time :)

I love NES version but I only got to play original at Arcade version a few times, and by the time I was really of age Turtles In Time machines had taken the originals spot in most arcades. I was also used to playing home consoles and NES was my go to Even after we got a Sega. I felt the NES had a much better library ,and graphics though important didn't seem to decide a game for me. TMNT 3 Manhattan project really stepped things up as well still not arcade style but man the turtles and the whole game backgrounds looked so much better. They also added.to the move set with a special energy draining attack,which the best attacks were given to Michalangelo and Raphael since they had the shortest reach. I'd say Manhattan project was my favorite and had it been released on SNES I'd say it would have been better than Turtles in Time, as I preffered both the storyline, levels, and music of Manhattan project to TIT.

The Arcade game was very easy to die. When a ninja grab you from behind and another start to hit you. that alone can cost a life. The wheel robot with the electric wire do a lot of damage too. While in the Nes version there wasent anything like that, but the levels where a lot longer and when you are in the last level you can feel very tired affer been playing a beat em up since an hour ago. Nice video. Slight correction: the music, when porter to the NES, should be listed with the arranger, not “composer”, as the composers remain the same as the arcade.

I went to a Pinball and Arcade Museum and they let me play the old arcade game. Me and my brother beat it! I want the original arcade version though due to monetary reasons I can't get it :( I also prefer the original voices over the Battle nexus ones. I just want to play it again.

The NES version was actually available on some playchoice-10 machines oddly enough

I remember being disappointed in the arcade game when I last played it. Maybe it's because I played the NES version for years, but something about the hit detection felt off. My attacks were missing when I thought they shouldn't have missed.

Hopefully nickelodeon keeps the cow a Bunga collection available a lot longer than the 360 download version was available.

I definitely wanna get the Arcade 1 Up machine which will include this game & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. Watch, I'll try to save some money for it & something will come up, preventing me from getting it (like my car needs repairs or whatnot). I do have the NES game & even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time for Super Nintendo & both games are great. Oh & yes, I do have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare for Nintendo GameCube & yes, I have unlocked the 1st Arcade game in Battle Nexus as well as Turtles in Time in Mutant Nightmare.

You ever thought about an episode comparing the differences between the Saturn PS1?
@GamevsGame8 жыл бұрын
working on one right now actually :) if you're dying for some PS1/Saturn coverage, i also talked a bit about Street Fighter: The Movie PS1 v. Saturn on the Street Fighter episode a while back.

Will go back and watch it again for sure. What's interesting about the battle that those two companies had and what each console was supposed to be able to do and not able to do, I find both were very capable machines.

Saturn of coarse was supposedly a 3d lightweight, yet was capable of such games as Quake, Panzer Dragoon (series) and Shenmue.
@anniegonzalez57078 жыл бұрын
Ps1 was not supposed to do 2d as well as the Saturn and yet certain Street Fighter titles, Castlevania and even some shmups looked as good if not better than their Saturn counterparts.

I love and hate that time in gaming as it pretty much was the beginning of the end for Sega.

Were there original songs for the 2 unique levels?

I had a talk a couple of years back on the comment section for the same game having a port of the first turtles arcade game on 16bit snes.And said that i believe that the snes could handle masterfully the original arcade graphics.A guy answered me in my comment telling me that he think that even snes wasn't strong enough to lift the original arcade's power.I still believe though that snes would handled really good the first game without a problem.Since they did that awesome job with turtles in time,and that arcade had even better graphics why not the first turtles game? I wish there was some kind of a way to port this to a snes and see if the system could work with the power of the system.Tell me your thoughts people about that matter,and happy new year to all.

I thought the nes version was older than the arcade judging by its 8-bit style. Guess I was wrong.

Is it possible someone could hack and update the arcade rom to include the 2 extra levels from the NES port?

The Irate Gamer was really unfair with the NES version of this game in his review. Regardless of how you feel about him, that's neither here nor there. He mainly trashed the NES version because it didn't have arcade graphics and lost the four player mode. I mean, I will admit, my first time playing the NES version when I was a kid, it was SLIGHTLY disappointing as it wasn't 100% like the arcade. But for most of us, it was that or nothing. I used to not be able to get passed level 4, until I discovered that one-hit move and that kicking the bosses defeat them faster. If you don't compare the NES version to the arcade version and view it on its own merits, it's a good game. Much better than the first TMNT game.
