This was actually a very difficult song with long bridges and "run" lines. Karen of course with her perfect breath control did it masterfully...

Chase I want you to fully understand this. As a teenager in the late 60s and early 70s, I was excoriated and humiliated for liking their music. It was cinsidered "fa.....music" ( you fill in that last letter). Do you fully understand what I am saying to you??? You were made to feel guilty if you liked The Carpenters. I listened to them alone in my room or in my car by myself. You honestly make me 😢. A male teenager discovering this stunning voice and loving it. How incredibly ironic all these years later but how amazingly satisfying it is to hear your comments. You have no idea how much it means to me. Now, in 2023, most every reaction channel has fallen in love with her. I know I will never meet you but I am giving you a great big AIR HUG from North Carolina. No other voice touches my soul, even to this day, than Karen Carpenter. Bless you young man. Have a long, happy and successful life. And BTW, you have great...make that extraordinary... taste in music and love your channel.❤❤❤❤. Hope you fon't mind the vibes from a 69 year old teenager but your channel does my heart good. I think I am beginning to get the sniffles again....oh, well....

You are doing a great job Chase in describing the legendary Karen Carpenter. IMHO Best female vocalist ever. Karen Carpenter is the bar female musicians strive to reach her. Plus did not have auto tune and would have never used it. It is said auto tune was created to try and keep up with Karen's vocals. Never happen. PTL.

Welcome to the Carpenters rabbit hole! The harmonies are all Richard and Karen. They recorded the background many times and then stacked them to one tape. This song composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. Toni Peluso play the fuzzy guitar. He said when Karen called to see if he would play on it he did not believe it was her. Once she convinced him and he got to the studio he was playing what he thought was acceptable for a Carpenters song and Richard stopped him and said play it straight for about 5 bars then go wild. Toni did not think it would work until he heard the final track. The Carpenters got some hate mail about going rock and roll. Toni remained a part of the band until Karen died.

Karen had a very beautiful voice. I'm glad you found out about her. I thought your reaction was great, and it's nice to see your appreciation of their music. I'd like to see your reaction to the Carpenters "Superstar".

Thank you for your reaction. Sadly, that song was kind of a reflection to Karen's life. She never found that love while here in those short 32 years. Her voice, along with her brother's arrangements... they were one of a kind! I hope you would react to their song, "Masquerade" - thank you.

Chase, this was a controversial song when it came out. When the Tony Peluso fuzz guitar solo and outro happened it freaked out the fans (not me) as it was them selling out. What it was Richard created what is arguably the first Power Ballad. From this album forward Tony became a Carpenter till the end and even after with Richard. I loved your reaction and actually didn’t mind you jumping the track around. I felt your enthusiasm through the screen. I’m going to recommend a live performance where I think you will be equally enthused. It’s a performance of The Bacharach/David Medley. You may not know all the songs but trust me, they are iconic. It was performed in 1970 at a military hospital, the audience are Viet Nam War vets and patients. They aren’t crazy loud but it was a different time. Karen is electric and it’s all a giant joy. I hope you enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6PWpn95e555qqs

You should also definitely find a video of Karen playing drums. She was a world class drummer and viewed herself as the drummer who could sing. That gorgeous voice of course captures everyone, but she could drum and sing like that at the same time. Her brother Richard really had to push her to get her out in front to sing like a lead singer to a band, she wanted to sit at her drums and sing.

OK - you've officially made this old man weepy. Carpenter's music was of your grandparents' era - and it's a joy to see someone your age not only listening to them - but liking their sound and zeroing in on all the exact same things that folks your grandparents age loved about them. Back in the day, there wasn't a prom or wedding reception that didn't feature their songs.

Not to sound salacious but does anyone notice how incredibly beautiful she was. That stunning tragedy is, she did not see it. How on God's green earth could she not. One of the enduring, heartbreaking mysteries. BTW, have a great vacay! You stay cool. We love you, too!

You're liking Richard's multitracking. Early in their career Carpenters did loads of that. Richard got the idea from late 40s Les Paul recordings and ran with it. Even after KC died, he revisited it on his Time solo CD from 1987. Check out When Time Was All We Had from that project, and Carpenters stuff like Another Song, Crescent Noon and Mr Guder...

I’ve heard this song 50,000 times. Always liked it but never thought it was quite in the same league as some of their others…your reaction has changed my mind. I always knew her phrasing in this song was masterfully executed and tough as anything but I guess I hadn’t thought about the individual elements until I watched your video…and your surprise. Her voice is the best; Richard’s arrangements and orchestrations were beyond compare. This song was from their 1972 album, “A Song for You,” one of my favorite albums of theirs

Chase once again you have given me so much joy. Understand that when this song came out they got so much flak for including an electric (fuzz) guitar into this song. Real flak. It is actual genius. A true power ballad ftom The Carpenters. Richard, stand up and take a bow. This song is one of my top 3 Carpenters songs along with Superstar and Solitaire. God bless you richly young man. Thank you sooooo much.❤

Great reaction vid, Chase! I especially liked that you noticed the harp strum at 3:17 bridge followed by the key change vocals with Karen and Richard. Fantastic! Richard Carpenter is a master producer and backing vocalist...and of course Karen was always pitch-perfect. But this one was Richard's genius, from landing Tony Peluso for the guitar work to writing the song with Richard Bettis to producing to perfection. This one sure does stand up to time. This is my favorite Carpenters track too. Keep discovering.

Lovelines and Made in America are two outstanding albums. Piece of trivia, fans were upset with the Carpenters because of the way Tony Peluso played fuzz guitar. Fans thought they were getting away from their original sound. But, it is beautiful.
