Sadly we lost Karen Carpenter in 1983. One of the best voices ever and great drummer

I never heard this version with the piano solo at the end. It’s a really nice ending to a beautiful song. Thanks for posting! ✌🏻👍🏻✌🏻

i think its the version for the singles LP

The title means singles (or songs) that they released during the period 1969-1981. Karen passed away in 1983. Their last album while she was still alive was released in 1981, although after she passed, a further 4 Carpenters albums of earlier recorded songs were released. A shelved solo album by Karen was also released in 1996.

Richard put the piano solo in there after Karen's passing.

You really can't forget everything Richard did for the group. What songs he didn't he help write; he would go out and find the perfect songs for her to sing. He would create the arrangements to best get the most off her voice. Plus; he is a killer piano player. So, anytime you hear piano playing; that's Richard.

Your appreciation of Carpenters music and Karen's heavenly voice at your young age is inspiring. Don't know if you realize how great a drummer Karen was and how happy she was behind a drum kit. Check out some of her drum solos and the big smile on her face. By the way, love the lyrics on this song.

It hurts that we lost her. I never got over it. The best singer who ever lived and a first class drummer.

One of the best songs of the Carpenters.❤️👍

The date is there so people know that songs they put out during that span might be on the record. Previously they put out another album, called "The Singles 1969-1973," which preceded this compilation and had obviously a narrower span of time from which songs were selected.

Great reaction Chase. I hate to say it but you’ll be finding new and unique things about almost every song to make it your new favorite or something extra special. They were just that good. This Masquerade, A Song For You, Solitaire; all have those features and so many more. Karen died 40 years ago this past February, 1983. I remember that like it was yesterday, still. It gives me and I’m sure others who experienced them in the time, special joy to see young folks (and older folks) reacting to and enjoying them like back then. Maybe even better now than then. There was a stigma that they were too goody two shoes, to clean cut. They were just amazingly talented people, including the band and studio crew. Keep up the great work.

You’re picking the gems from a large catalogue. Watch Karen sing ‘Superstar’ and you’ll be in love forever.

It’s the span of years of their singles.

That piano bit at the end was newly recorded, and served to link the song to the next one in that Singles album, Close to You. That piano bit was not part of the original recording.

Yes that's my favorite Carpenters song. Layered voice tracks helps but ingenious

I’m glad you’re appreciating this phenomenal music. A couple of gems I’d recommend (that I haven’t seen) are ‘Yesterday Once More’ and ‘Touch Me When We’re Dancing.’ Also, another class act to get into is Burt Bacharach. Such a prolific writer and so many hits with Hal David. I look forward to seeing your reactions 😊

If you love the Carpenters as I do, you'd probably love ABBA as well.

You're so right. Massive crossover between fans of ABBA and Carpenters. I'm trying to persuade TylerCreatesContent of the opposite right now: he's reached the end of the ABBA catalogue so should now turn to Carpenters!!

About that word "singles" and the years: the Carpenters released multiple compilation albums with the word "Singles" in the title. Richard Carpenter at the time preferred this title to the over-used "Greatest Hits" that many artists used for hit compilations. A single is a type of music release of one or more songs but shorter in length than an EP (extended play) or a full album. During the Carpenters' active career, a single release typically was on a small vinyl disc called a "45" (after the number of revolutions per minute or rpm for the disc). The primary song - the one that was intended for radio airplay - was the A-side. The B-side on Carpenters singles releases usually was an album track from either a recent or then-current album. Most of the duo's "Singles" compilations featured just the A-side or hit releases. The first such compilation, "The Singles: 1969 - 1973," included all of the songs from their domestic (U.S.) A-side releases, from their 1969 debut, "Ticket to Ride," to 1973's "Top of the World" - though not necessarily all in the exact version as used in the single release. For American audiences, this was by far their most popular hits compilation, as it included the duo's most iconic hits during the peak of their popularity in the States. This album became their first and only LP to reach #1 on the Billboard album charts, ultimately going seven times platinum. Following the 1969 - 1973 compilation, A&M Records released a follow-up for the years 1974 - 1978, but only outside the U.S. In the U.K, where their popularity remained high, the album was an enormous success, reaching #2 on the albums chart. The compilation shown on the video you watched, the CD titled, "Singles: 1969 - 1981," came out in 1999-2000 (different dates in different markets) and included many, though not all, of the duo's most popular hit singles from their active career. For the original singles, A and B side, throughout their career and including the handful of releases following Karen's death, the place to go is the compilation, "The Complete Singles," which was produced for Public Television in 2015.

So glad you've discoverd Carpenters and ABBA. Another female vocalist I recommend is LINDA RONSTADT. She was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. I recommend DESPERADO (live); BLUE BAYOU (live); LONG LONG TIME and HURSTS SO BAD (just to start off with). I guarantee you'll be blown away - and add her to your must listen to list. Love your enthusiastic reactions.
