Have you listened to Bleach? It's an early album of theirs. The music isn't incredibly complex, but it's a lot closer to the metal you claimed not to be able to find in them.

Yea I thought the same. Smells like teen spirit was Nirvana's attempt at a pop song. That's one of the reasons they infamously mocked the live performance. Seems an easy debate that it wouldn't even be on the top 10 of their harder songs. It seems he's surprisingly igornant of the history of their music. Then again I'd trade in all my moderate amount of nirvana knowledge for the encyclopedia this guy's got on stuff I've never even heard yet. Love Nirvana. Definitely overrated. Definitely don't care. ✌

@IntergalacticApeMan
@IntergalacticApeMan 7 жыл бұрын
Music is about the notes not played and so minimalism can be the supreme art form. I'd like to add that punk has more dimensions than the above mentioned. Blitz, Cocksparrer, Discharge, Broken Bones or The Exploited are bands I love as much if not more. My heroes though are Amebix, regarded to as Proto-Crust, with hints of Motörhead, Venom and Bathory, at the same time primitively progressive elements. Listen to the "Arise!" album and you know what I mean. That kind of music may require as much training for the listener to really get into as it does for an act like Dream Theater, whilst the latter usually put too much into a song to be enjoyable for me. If punk taught us one thing it's you don't have to master an instrument to become a great musician. It's the musical equivalent of liberalism.

Not just Layne, man. AIC is Jerry. Jerry is responsible for all the music and a good chunk of the lyrics. AIC was always metal but unfortunately got bunched in with the "grunge" crowd. To this day Dirt is imho one of the darkest, honest masterpiece created.

Nirvana is my favorite band... and I pretty much agree with a lot of things you said... not with all of them. As kurt said "most of the time they take us too seriously and they dont look at our funny side". They used to laugh about a lot of crappy things in the music industry and other stuff. About Kurt whining about how crappy his life was, well... i dont see it that way. There is a very interesting interview called "about a son" where he talks about how "his story is not a sad one", how "it happens to a lot of people" and how "he is just a product of a spoiled america" or something like that. He also talks about how "rock is dying". I think you should check out more Nirvana songs. More "HEAVY" songs like SCENTLESS APPRENTICE, MILK IT, FLOYD THE BARBER, or LOVE BUZZ (which I think are GREAT). That way I hope you will like Nirvana better. I really like your videos by the way.

This was a truly interesting video to watch. I do really like Nirvana's music, and I've always connected a lot with some of the messages of hopelessness in their songs. I also appreciate the simplicity in their music, the raw aspect of it all, although I can understand how that can be a factor which makes a lot of people not really like their music that much. Great video man! Loved to hear a different perspective on one of the Bands I love the most. Really liked the way you were honest about how you feel about Nirvana and how you view their music, while being super respectful! Great stuff!!! 👍👍👍

Kurt was ambidextrous...played lefty guitar but wrote with his right hand, etc. I understand your points here. I respectfully disagree with quite a few though. Yes, I've always liked Nirvana, but it's not until leaving the Pacific Northwest, doubling in age and becoming a music promoter that I learned so much about Kurt (and Nirvana in general) that truly surprised me. I can honestly understand the majority of what he's singing now and have studied his lyrics, paintings, politics, etc. I realize you don't have the interest, but he truly was a genius in ways that are very rare and interesting to contemplate. His entire life was so complicated, and if you ever lived where he did and shared some of the same life circumstances, I truly think you'd think differently about him and the band. He was tired of "three chord grunge." He had many drastically different plans evolving for the future, regardless of your opinions of how he passed. I still completely respect your views, but have to agree to disagree. Thanks for an enjoyable vid! Peace....

If this is your favorite Nirvana song, you probably haven't heard much of theirs. Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of those songs that I could never hear again for the rest of my life, and I'd be ok with that. Alongside Freebird, Strairway, and Enter Sandman. That doesn't discount the effects that any of those songs have had on the music world. They're all great songs (well, Enter Sandman I have a hard time calling great), but they're only their signature songs. Not necessarily their best. I recommend "Lounge Act", "Aneurysm", "Very Ape", "On A Plain". Their aesthetic isn't clear to see if you've only heard their singles. Musically they were a hybrid of new wave melody, late 80's sludge/noise rock distortion, and punk rock velocity. Ethically, Kurt was a punk at heart. Socially aware, reckless, and an F you attitude. They stood against the musical status quo of the time, which was power ballads, over the top falsetto vocals, and playing dress up. When Nevermind knocked Michael Jaskson's Dangerous from the number one album spot, the music industry shit their pants

Bleach and Nevermind are just plain awesome albums, Knocking Smells like Teen Spirit because it's overplayed however is snobbery plain and simple - It's overplayed because it's great! Same with Enter Sandman - Of Wolf and Man, Don't Tread on Me, Sad But True are all great songs too but there's a reason Enter Sandman was the big hit! I don't actually like Stairway to Heaven that much but I'm not a fan of Zep apart from the Immigrant Song. Knocking Freebird is just not on - Surely EVERYONE likes that song!
@williamz7011
@williamz7011 7 жыл бұрын
Bleach was their only album that I just couldn't get into. Smells Like Teen Spirit and Enter Sandman aren't their most popular songs because of how good they are. They're as popular as they are because of their approachability by the average radio listener. Enter Sandman lacked everything that their existing fans craved, and was hugely controversial in the metal world. They traded in their technical signature sound they were known for, for a watered down radio friendly sound. It had nothing to do with overplay, it's because it's generic as far as Metallica goes. And did I really knock Smells Like Teen Spirit? Nah, I had an opinion that you disagreed with. And don't call me Shirley!

I think Nirvana was a phenomenon of the 90s, which launched a reaction against music just prior to it (late 80s like hair bands or similar). I think the fact that I am older than you means I experienced something that you can only vicariously see after the fact. There were specials about him after he died. It was weird but it was something to see when a whole load of people (various ages) were affected.

7:06 oh my god yes. Of course it does. I'm going to use rappers as an example. If Tupac and Biggie hadn't died and were still making music =, they probably wouldn't be as acclaimed as they are. Just look at Eminem, If Eminem had died after the Marshall Mathers Lp, he would be talked about as the greatest rapper that ever touched a mic, but because he is still alive and made a crap album hes gotten lower on the list of rappers that people say are the greatest of all time.It is true that the premature death of an artist causes that artist to make a bigger influence and impact, not to mention the bandwagon of new fans that only became fans after the death of the artist.

What people see in this stuff is that it made it so that love and passion for music was more important than technical ability. So when you criticize it for not being super complicated....yeah that's the point, that kids who aren't these super impressive musicians can still play music because playing music should always be about love for music first and foremost. Music = passion and having fun while playing it, not fancy abilities in the technical sense. They showed that being a little bit more stripped down can still sound good and have heart. And I say this as a 25 year old who moved to Seattle 8 months ago due to the influence of grunge.

It's not the music itself, so much as what it stands for and it's impact on modern music. There are plenty of grunge songs I like (I will admit, mostly the hits); there are even Nirvana songs I like. Grunge kinda works off of this melancholic, bizzare, and well "grungy" sound that is too simplistic for my tastes. Unlike other music where you hear the feel and nuance in the simplicity, I feel like grunge has none (imho). Even the tone is kinda flat. Again, I know it's personal taste. I greatly appreciate you watching the video and giving your feedback dude \m/

SLTS is not their heaviest song, I'd definately recommend listening to 'Scentless Apprentice' the second track off In Utero if you haven't already. I'll admit Kurt Cobain is hard as fuck to understand, but if you do read some of their lyrics, there's a lot of parallels between his songwriting and someone like John Lennon. A lot of Cobain's songs meant nothing and were completely nonsensical. A lot of them are super fucking profound and the lyrics mean a lot. To each their own, but in my opinion Cobain was a lyrical genius and a pure musician. Great video as always though Mike, even if I disagree, as always I enjoyed it thoroughly :)

Dashiell Sisson you are right about that. He is an absolutely incredible guitarist and very influential.

Hey man I know this is late but you should try listening to some of the heavier nirvana stuff like milk it, blew and negative creep

Pretty much spot on. I was in college when Nirvana came out and at the time, I loved them. I recently pulled out the CDs and listened to them for the first time in 10-15 years. It was a surprise to myself that my reaction was "it's not that good, why was I so enthralled with them?" It just seemed great because it was different to the stale music that we had become used to from 1986-1991.

The reason why I still have a fair amount of emotional attachment to nirvana is that sliver was the frist bass line I was teached by a dear friend of mine. That song stilt gets me every time.
