Sting wrote the song about the famous eccentric and gay icon Quentin Crisp, who is the "Englishman" of the title. The song was composed not long after Crisp had moved from London to an apartment in the Bowery in Manhattan.

From his first solo album after he left The Police Bradford Marsalis on clarinet and and a kid I went to HS with Omar Hakim on drums. Haven't heard this in a minute. ✌

Sting has had a long solo career after his brilliant Police catalogue. This is from his second solo album. He kept mixing up his styles. I would recommend his live album released before this album came out. Bring On The Night. He got a full band of jazz and funk musicians to back him up and played songs from The Police and his first album. I think the tour de force is the track combining Bring On The Night with When The World Is Running Down. It’s about 11 minutes of brilliance.

Oh, and it’s about EnglishMAN Quentin Crisp. A gay icon, who is the “sweet woman” in the video. :-)

The entire album, NOTHING LIKE THE SUN, is incredible, this whole band is on it. Check out Be Still My Beating Heart, History Will Teach Us Nothing, The Lazurus Heart, Sister Moon & fragile. take your choice although Fragile is the mellowest of all of them. Keep on buddy, Sting is great & works with some sick musicians. Love the channel, Peace

I'd go as far as to recommend the documentary that went along with the launch of Sting's solo career "Bring On The Night" 1985. You get to hear a lot of great songs, and get some great perspective on how Sting produces songs and his creative process in it.

"Takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile. Be Yourself, no matter what they say"... The song is about the older gentleman in the video, Quentin Crisp, who was an openly gay man in NY when it wasn't safe to be so. He stuck to his guns and lived his life the way he wanted! What a fantastic song and message! Shout out to the Jazz band especially Brandon Marsalis on Soprano Saxophone!

Great reaction. 👍🎶 Very beautiful song. Thanks Christine for a great choice. I like the jazz elements and the transitions between different tempos. Just really smooth and of course Sting’s vocals are amazing. These lyrics stood out for me: If "manners maketh man" as someone said He's the hero of the day It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile Be yourself no matter what they say Be yourself no matter what they say Be yourself no matter what they say -Patricia 😎🙌🎶🔥🎵

Love the vibe in this video, and an iconic song. The kind that should never be covered by anyone. I like videos where artists are walking down the street in general. Gives them kind of a 'normal human' vibe. Other video's where the do this: Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia (is as iconic as this song). Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy Michael Jackson - Stranger in Moscow

Morrissey - Suedehead - from Wikipedia - The music video, directed by Tim Broad, features Morrissey walking through the streets of Fairmount, Indiana,[11] the hometown of actor James Dean, including shots of the school where Dean studied and the Park Cemetery, where he is buried. Other allusions to Dean in the video include a child (played by Sam Esty Rayner, Morrissey's nephew, who went on to direct the video for "Kiss Me a Lot" in 2015) delivering to Morrissey a copy of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, Dean's favourite book.[12] Morrissey characterized the video as him "messing with James Dean's soil."[4]

I'm glad you appreciated that. I know you did The Police:Message in a Bottle, but if you want to hear a more interesting version, see the live version. The tempo is a bit faster, and best of all is that they let Stewart Copeland play drums the way he wanted to. Its great drumming. It's not my favorite Police song, but it's so great to get to watch. Great sound quality. (Could for with fewer dancing girls and even more shots of drumming!) ITS the 👉1983! version with Stewart Copeland posted by 👉 Mystic Rhythms Live.
