Lol 80% of the jet is bought from others, like engine, radar, avionics, weapons, even the missiles.. Basically India just designed the frame, and no one thinks Tejas frame is good or revolutionary. Even Indian Air Force doesn't want it and prefer the French or Russians eats they bought. From scratch? No,that's China who has domestic production capability to produce everything from frame to engine to avionics to missiles to radars or GPS satellites. India doesn't produce anything, even bullets for rifles are produced overseas.

The IAF is on record stating that during Gagan Shakti exercises, LCA did 6 sorties in 1 day, no malfunctions of any sort, and was the most accurate in bombing runs compared to Mirages and Sukhois. This is what matters during war - availability ( as opposed to hangar queens) . Wars are expensive. While the Rafales and Sukhois of the world do strategic tasks, you want a fighter which does CAP, bombing, reconnaissance and support roles at a nominal cost. The LCA does that job. I do hope IAF and Indian defense agencies dont go for the shiny shiny and invest a lot in both MK1A and Mk2 variants. This will protect the home front.

The truth is that India will benefit more by having something developed by India for India than just copying the US or Russian designs. India will have a good jet that does exactly what it needs instead of the Chinese approach of stealing and then making bad copies of very expensive and costly to run American aircraft. This means the Chinese are stuck with expensive to run aircraft that meet US or Russian needs of the 80s or 90s when the jets were initially designed. India will have capable jets that cost a fraction and will probably be significantly more affordable to use and repair. India keeps it's self respect and that of the world and in turn gets better engineers who have a deeper understanding of the technology and industrial processes that they are working with. I see a future where India exports these to other countries needing an affordable solution to their military needs as well.

I agree. I do believe every nation benefits from collaboration. I personally believe India should end the Tejas program and use the lessons learned and resources to partner with one of the cutting edge aircraft manufacturers in the Western Democracies. To me a perfect partner would be one of the following. Boeing/Saab.. Lockheed Martin, BAE / Saab / Boeing. Or possibly Mitsubishi and BAE. I know Lockheed has offers the f-21 with the most advanced systems to date with an oath that would lead to the F-35 and or 6-gen fighter. I’m positive BAE would welcome the expertise and partnership with Indian on the new Tempest platform. Im also certain the French would welcome a partnership on the next 6 gen fighter in its development. This would give India an opportunity to further develope its own nations knowledge and skill sets. Then, in 15-20 years, India should be in a powerful position to develop a clean sheet fighter and not have partners if it didn’t want them.

Which will be used in AMCA( 5.5 gen jet plane, first flight is expected in 25-26) And India will hold IP rights of the engine It has developed completely indigenous AESA radar called Uttam which is superior to Israeli radar used before. Su30 nd mig29 will also get it as an update. India has developed Anti radiation missile called rudram for ew. It also have it's own indigenously EW suite called Mayavi. But it will be integrated only on mk2 version of tejas as mk1 has less space It has also developed Bvr missile Astra mk1 which is currently in service. Has range of 110km With Astra mk2 which is expected to complete its final trials by first half of this year has a range of 160 km. Astra mk 3 will be Sfdr bvr missile nd will be comparable with meteor missile. It will be inducted most probably by next year. Another Variant of Astra will be short range with IR

Finally an unbiased video on Tejas from someone who knows what he is talking about. The first step is always a difficult one. And for Pakistani trolls citing JF-17, what Pakistan is doing with JF-17, India has already done it with SU-30 MKI, i.e assembling Russian/Chinese supplied kits domestically with some amount of local manufacturing. In fact, India is ahead because Indian MSMEs manufacture and export many spare parts for Su-30 to countries that operate similar fleet.

We still do get a lot of major Avionics Suites from China but we manufacture 99% of Hardware here in Pakistan and this exactly was the project and we successfully accomplished it. And for the production, India produced Orpheus engines in 1957, assembled Mig-21s since 1960s, Do-228 aircraft...and recently, RD-33k engines, Chassis for Apache helicopters, parts for P-8..and the list goes on. There is simply no comparison. Also JF-17 was an abandoned Russian design which China bought and further developed. This is one of the reasons that it relies on RD-33 series engines because original design was developed by Russia keeping this engine in mind.

You were spot on with radar. LRDE (not ADA) is the agency in charge of it. LRDE in the agency which has come up with the ground based radars and radar for the AEW&C all of which have been tested in our constant border skirmishes. Anyhow, LRDE has developed an AESA radar called Uttam by scaling down the systems tested for the AEW&C program. The radar is roughly analogous to the Elta's 2052 (which will go on the Tejas Mk1A). The radar has completed testing based on roof mounted structure (on a tall building), followed by testing on a business jet with a modified nose and has just entered testing on limited series production (LSP) Tejas airframe.

But they had lot of design help from Kurt Tank & West Germany. Infact the work done by Germany with India was bought over in the design phase of the Tornado with the British. India realised the importance of trying to develop indigenous components after Rolls Royce refused to supply powerful engines for the Marut & the Soviets refused to sell engines for use in any plane involving West German engineers. Meanwhile the US was selling F-16s to Pakistan back then so US engines was out of the question. Edit: The first bit is a joke that Spanish speakers in the US would understand. Secondly, why are there so many Pakistanis in the comments talking shit about how bad the Tejas is & how useless it is. One interesting fact I would like to highlight. Off course there were nagging technical issues but the biggest problem was the mindset of our earlier politicians. They didn't stand behind the project firmly and rather were interested to make money in kickbacks from foreign aircrafts. An Indian Italian family has a big hand in Tejas delay.😔

That is always the first thing I'd like to assess when diving into a projects history. How much of the failure is due to technical inabilities and how much due to impossible requirements. The blame is usually placed on the engineers, but most of the time it are the politics and incompetence among decision makers that make the project delay, overrun in cost and under perform.

Sorry to say no, SAAB is now upgrading JAS 39 C with a GaN radar the upgrade will start within a month. It is 1000 TR moduels radar and it has a detection range 70% larger than a Gallium Arsenide based radar. The Israeli radar that is going to be put into the Tejas MK1 exists in 300, 500 and a 1500 TR moduals versions. The Tejas MK1 will probebly have a new variant with 400 to 450 TR. This is not good enough. Tejas MK1 is unmodern when it arrives.

The aesa radar problem is almost complete. Indegenous radar has proved to be evenly matched with the Israeli aesa radar in initial tests. More tests are being conducted to make it mass produced and fit it in mk2 version and even upgrade the sukhois

Good job, but I would recommend India to use the GaN radar that SAAB now is providing to the Jas C. The radar has 1000 GaN TR modules. Such a radar would give the Tejas a 70% increased detection range compared to the Gallium Arsenide radar systems used by the Israeli radar. It would be a gamechanger for any model of Tejas. The new Jas C radar not being as powerfull as the Jas E radar would still out class everything that the Chinese and Pakistani have today. Even the USA would have problems facing a low RCS fighter like Tejas Equipt with this radar. For me it is a no brainer by the new Jas C radar Ask SAAB to provide a 700 TR module to Tejas Mk2. I would think that buying 200 GaN radar systems from SAAB would make the Indian Airforse into a regional Airpower not to trifle. The fact that the Brahmos missile could be fired from a Tejas Mk2 at a distance of more than 300km or from a Jas E at a distance of over 400km would at least scare any Chinese hangar ship of the coast. Using a Jas E going 1300 km out from the coast would force the Chinese to station their fleet at a distance of at least 1700km away from the coastline. Unfortunately the Chinese they do not have a plane with a combat radius that cans start from a Hangar shipp. Nor do they have the capacity to protect against the Brahmos in such a scenario.

But on the other hand the present government is hell-bent on indigenous development to save every penny and use it for further development. Basically India needs to be self sufficient if we're to avoid sanctions if we ever had to blow the lights out of pakistan. Even though it has nuclear missiles, it doesn't have a ballistic missile shield program. India has one and also the s400 russian systems will go a long way in providing another layer of security. US had prevented us from using gps during kargil war. Hence, we had to develop our own system. India had missed the opportunity to fully modernise its forces due to the economic sanctions after the nuclear testings in late 90s. But, we are quite hopeful that just like ISRO has become a popular name in the field of space technology by developing everything from scratch, other agencies will be able to do that in their respective fields. Also, it's would be a hellride for Chinese if some conflict happens in the Indian Ocean. We have air and naval bases in the south and also in Andaman Islands. Sukhois, p-8 sub hunters and submarines are stationed there. Both have similar type of ballistic shield programs. Also, the two nations are not stupid enough to kill each other and slide down to a poverty and destruction. Yet, i hope a few Jas E are procured to equip 2 squadrons of Tejas to be more effective against the adversaries.

The precent situation is becoming more and more hazardous since the Chinese is under preasure from the USA, resulting in a huge armament program. That program is in itself a treath to India. To meet a stronger China that supports Pakistan there India has to arm ithemself. The most important factor in today's war is airpower. India has for a long time neglected its airforce both in quantity and quality. India has no longer the luxury of time, India is getting further and further behind China. Within 20 years India will hopefully have cought up to the rest of the world in important technological areas, today it has not. Equiping the airforce with systems that are expensive and that will be unmodern within 10 years is not a good investment. China will have GaN radars within 10 years making the Indian planes sitting ducks. It took SAAB 10 years to construct the GaN radar. I do not want to insult India but it will take longer for India since it starts from further behind. The French are some years from a usable GaN radar so is the USA. Equiping the Indian airforce with superior radar system would make them very strong for the next 15 years. A license production of the Jas C radar ought to be possible. Yeas SAAB would ask a high price for such a technology transfer but it would be well spent money. They are in a strong position and they know it. GaN technology also makes it possible to have an enormus edge inf E warfare so the future is a strong airforse with GaN technology. The precent technology became very old very fast. Even the USA is equipping their navy with SAAB radars. I promise MAGA Trump would not do this it they had they had the technology. Even the F35 and F22 has reasons to fear the GaN radar and E warfare suites with GaN technology. So it is realy a gamechanger.

Although I might sound like a fanboy, I have been fighting misinformation (not your video which is well made, but reporting in general) for more than a decade. Let me leave behind a few stats and then let you be the judge. 1. The Rafale purchase was the result of an medium weight multirole combat aircraft competition (MMRCA) which is unrelated to LCA. BEyond the selection, everything is a sorry saga and the in the current purchase, there will be no ToT. 2. The aircraft weighs 6.5 tons empty, 9.8 tons clean TOW and is powered by a 89 kN AB engine. Is such an aircraft underpowered. If yes, all version of Gripen, Mirage2000, JF-17s etc. are even more underpowered. 3. Naval-LCA or NLCA Mk1 is indeed overweight. With a skijump launch, it will only be able to carry a centerline 725 ltr tanks and 6 A2A missiles only: 2 CCMs and 4 BVRAAMs. Being single engined is another cause for concern in the Indian Navy. 4. Its first operations on the Vikramaditya which you covered took the Indian Navy by surprise. For a team and aircraft which had never been on an aircraft carrier, they showcased 3 test sorties per aircraft per day from day 2. About Point 2, yes, all the planes that you have mentioned are underpowered. In one of the Gripen videos I explain how Sweden deliberately underpowered the Gripen to save costs and complexities, for example. In any case the T/W ratio that better represents the aircraft capability is Full Military/MTOW. The wet thrust can be used for a very short time and it is relevant almost only during air to air WVR fight; which is very important, but it is not everything.

Around 2000, India was in need for more aircraft. IAF was impressed by the Mirage2000s weapon delivery during the Karhil war of 1999. Dassault offered to move the Mirage 2000 pipeline to India. The politics in India came up and said this is favoritism towards one company and there should be a competition instead. All in the medium weight category. The technical evaluation was completed in 2011. Very professionally done. But then came in the bureaucracy and politics. Finally everything was dropped and a direct purchase was made. It is a comedy of errors Regarding point 2. I really like your rebuttal. I have no problems with that. I have a problem when people say Tejas is underpowered but Mirage, Gripen is not. Apparently, the laws of physics change from one plane to the other for many of these guys. Your point of TWR being only one aspect of a complex interplay is also well taken (who can disagree) .Brings us to another important feature which is the wing loading. Tejas has a huge wing compared to its size/weight. It has almost the same wing area as a Rafale! This very low wing loading comes with its attendant strengths and weaknesses. Actually this aircraft was designed to Indian conditions of high temperatures. On top of that most of our border skirmishes are in the mountainous regions. This gives rise to hot and high take off conditions. At Leh, airplanes have to take off at 10.500 feet at 40 C. Tejas did it with 2 * 1200 ltr tanks, 2 *450 kg bombs, LDP and 2 * CCM which is about 80% of its max payload of 4 tons.

If India can reach Moon and Mars (on its maiden attempt) with indigenous tech, one would not be surprised with it building Fighter planes. As clearly pointed out in the video, the objective was to be self-reliant and stop importing costly machines when you can develop an entire industry in your home. India is not completely there yet but this story (of taking risk) should serve an an inspiration for others. While Tejas is going to be upgraded to Mark1a and Mark2 later, India has also made concrete plans for 5th gen multirole fighter called AMCA. All the failures and experiences will definitely help in the long run. Thanks!

Pointed to be noted that the Tejas started as small interceptor plane design to replace aging Mig 21 bison. So it's airframe design is based on that requirement later IAF want it perform as Multi role fighter instead of just interceptor. This is also a reason for shortfalls of Tejas as design done for interceptor plane need to accommodate multi role fighter features. India had developed an indigenous fighter jet called the HF 24 MARUT in the 1960s. But owing to difficulties in procuring a powerful engine, that program eventually failed and the learnings from it were lost with time. With that backdrop it won't be wrong to say that the single most significant success of the TEJAS program has been the development of the aerospace ecosystem in India because unlike China we strived to developed our own systems rather than brazenly copying others. I graduated as a Metallurgical Engineer in 1994 and worked in Software Technology since. I know the Material Science challenges involves in creating an engine whose fins/turbines are operate at high temperate, pressure that comes with it moving at more than the speed of sound(yes..the tips of the fan). Software simulation and in general ‘Systems Engineering’ and ‘Systems Integration’ is something that I know we are reasonably good and perhaps just a step or two behind the best in the world. This means that with sustained focus, over the next 15 years we would be among the best of not the absolute best. Building an entire aerospace Eco system is a challenge that can only be accomplished over several generations...or at lest more than one generation. Also even though Tejas started 30years back..the current version is 4-4.5 gen.... it’s not like it’s a plane from the 90s Design...

Its sustainability will depend upon export competitiveness of complete aircraft or export of sub-systems e.g. different missiles, radar, design software or avionics etc. Please elaborate on potential of design simulation software to improve its future design capabilities. What is still missing? 1. India has still not developed independent verification and technology assessment process. This is largely opposed by Indian scientists bureaucracy. 2. The project should have integrated: a) Tejas and sub-systems R&D, testing, evaluation, implementation with b) long term financial allocations; c) periodical reviews of South Asian air threat assessments, d) Investment for manpower output in aero design and R&D should have been made in 1980s to develop broader knowledge, testing and evaluation experience through 20-25 years of Tejas development

Ok Good Video but multiple issue, First Tejas has around 70% indeginous system by value, even the modified elta2032 radar used has Indian backend, Its indeginous quad axis FBW is far better than any in IAF fleet, its handling is better than mirage 2000, It is one of the few fighter jets that can do Hot refulling with full weapon load Recently it got big praises while performing in bombing in IAF exercise, It was better than out dedicated bomber Jaguar. Ultimately IAF would buy around 300+ Tejas variants in coming years.

Good video, and balanced review of a very difficult subject! I was part of the LCA core team 1984-87, specializing in the development of the aerodynamic configuration. There is no question that the LCA has been a great source of pride for India's aeronautical technologists. The program needs an aggressive fillip, especially in view of China's rapid development of some very advanced fighter platforms in an amazingly short time frame. The Chinese have undoubtedly stuck to a rigorously focused strategy, that countries like India can emulate. One advantage the Chinese industry enjoys is that their Air Force cannot, for reasons of national prestige, pressure the Government to import aircraft. They used to do this from the Russians in the past, but no more. India's indigenous industry is up to the task of developing advanced fighter aircraft & associated weapon systems, but only if the Government makes this a national priority by forbidding its air force from importing aircraft. As always, this is a catch 22 situation, but if the Chinese can do it, so can India.

Indian has the enviable position that neither US nor Russian see it as strategic competitor and are eager to woe it on my hardware sale and technology transfer to some degree. For China, both see it as competitor. Even one of Putin’s close advisor admits that they need to go for Ukraine now so that they can deal with the Chinese threat in the coming years. So Russian sales to China is always about cash grab, not helping establish its military industry compound. In a sense, India’s enviable position is also a curse in disguise, in the sense that politicians doesn’t need to push through indigenous capabilities since the option to buy is always there and it would be far quicker and cheaper for peace time deterrence. One may not like Modi for his anti-democracy leaning and stroke of nationalism (but then which politician across the spectrum isn’t doing so these days? Maybe except Macron and a few Nordic ones), but he is the one politician who probably has the will to push through some of these very difficult tasks.

@@Ma_nerd China didn’t copy the design. Instead, they learnt the principles (albeit through some reverse engineering) and use these principles to come up with indigenous designs. In the process they built up their own industry base. India are luckier. They had the French to hold their hands and taught them these principles then apply to their own design. Both are indigenous. Though China had its back against a cliff whilst India has many cushions to fall back on. So China’s learning process can be more thorough. That said, because they don’t have a hand to hold on, they are also more prone to make unnecessary detours and repeat mistakes that the west has made in the past half a century. So each approaches have their own pros and cons and were constrained by geo-political circumstances each of them face.

On avionics , fully indigenous CLAW, quadraplex FBW, health manager, 3 MfDs indigenous, avionics is where Tejas outshines every other aircraft in IAF inventory apart from rafales, in precision bombing it is better than mirages 2000 as found out in exercise GAGAN Shakti. I'm by no means a Tejas expert , but I've followed the program very closely , so few points . When we started the program , we were our capabilities in the aerospace sector were hopeless . Though the program was thought of in the 1980s the program never went anywhere and also suffered heavy sanctions and embargos after a nuclear weapons test . The first flight was only in 2001 . It took about 15 years to get operational which is slow but nowhere near the 30 years claimed and I would say par for the course given our capabilities at that point . Delays have been because of technology and technical issues and general bureaucracratic inefficiencies of govt but also in large way by our air force who kept changing requirements throughout the program leading a lot of redesigning . On the radar front , we have developed a AESA radar which in testing has outperformed the ELTA 2052 on quite a few tests . We have also developed a modern integrated EW suite which first saw service on our upgraded Mig 29s. Also I would disagree with the hopelessly underpowered jibe the LCA gets , it has the same GEF404 as the Gripen-C and is a tad lighter . Engine development has been a huge problem and will probably continue to be . The current version of the fighter us far from being a world beater in terms of capabilities but gets the job and has impressed pilots at IAF with good performances at exercises . The MK1A version will have initially the ELTA 2052 AESA and later our own AESA along with a decent jamming pod as well the Astra missile and will be a capable cost effective fighter . The MK2 will feature the GE414, with close coupled canards a and other aerodynamic improvements and also our AESA radar and EW suite with Digital Frequency memory RWR , MAWS and phased array jamming as well a moden LAD in the cockpit and will be able to compete with Gripen NG fairly well , probably not surpassing it . The MK2 is coming along well and should fly by 2022-23 . I'm sorry this has been so long.

We had a professor who was project leader for the LCA , for the aircraft design course he showed quite a few semi classified graphs for the LCA's turn and climbed performance in comparison to other modern fighters , the LCA had better STR and ITR then the F16 .

On Kaveri engine : cleared for flight testing by snecma , currently producing 81kn wet thrust and 52kn dry thrust more than GEf404 but less than what it was designed for i.e 90kns, TWR is same as GE404 (7.8). 1700K temp sustained in turbines. GE engines are excellent , responsive and reliable engines thus serving tejas well.

We have recently received FOC version of Tejas and inducted second squadron. 40 jets are under manufacturing and 83 Tejas Mk1 is going to be signed in next few months. After that we are making MK1A and then AMCA 5+ gen fighter jet whose design is almost in final stage.

No Tejas lca ioc/doc/mk1a is hybrid of gnat, mig21bison and miraj2k. Had india chosen EJ2000 for Tejas as per wish of IAF it would be much better fighter hey due to higher thrust without afterburner and higher thrust to weight ratio compared to ge404. I think the whole point of making Tejas indigenously is that if one aircraft is lost in war another one or more can be built for which we have the technology and resources. If an imported plane is lost, buying a new one for replacement is time consuming and often results in political controversy. Though some people complain about the "failures" of the Tejas program is is good to remind them that this is the process that everybody goes through while creating not just a new aircraft but the immense support industry necessary to create the aircraft. Once HAL starts producing 5+ and 6th generation aircraft in the future it will be on the industry that the Tejas built. Often overlooked are the successful indigenously created systems (like the fly by wire setup) needed to produce not only Tejas but later more advanced fighters and support aircraft. The future looks good for India.

It’s such a fresh review of the Tejas! Almost all of the reviews I have seen or read have been negative with few kind words for the aircraft! I believe your perspective is correct about the aircraft and it’s place in India’s quest for self sufficiency in aviation! It did not follow the Chinese way of initially cloning other mature aircraft.

a lot of other important points have been missed. Unstable design with relaxed static stability, Quadruplux digital fly by wire, composite airframe, stealth, glass cockpit. Its a pretty advanced machine.

Yes the Indians have opted for this path of not cloning foreign technologies even in the automotive industry. For example TATA cars are not copies or inspired by foreign brands like Chinese cars like HAVAL with some sucess. But this path is more difficult. With cars, you have the issue of design, for example Chinese cars look much more 'western' than their Indian counterparts.

One of the biggest reason for delay in Tejas program was money was not allocated in time. Approval for the program was accorded in 1983, but funds were given for the development only in 1993, 10 years later. I don't mean to take political turn here, in 10 year's time between 1983-93, ruling elite of India chose to import military hardware rather than developing homegrown solutions. Apart from that the analysis was spot on 👍

I like watching military aviation channels on KZbin, but even ignoring that, I can see that developing a an efficient jet engine for non other than a top of the line fighter , is a colossal undertaking . I have no idea how India will be able to develop a wholly native jet fighter engine in our modern day, latest-technology environment.

Loved your video Sir! Greetings from India, its a refreshing change to hear an unbiased realistic video about the Tejas coming from the west. The gripen was an ace candidate for the Indian Aerospace industry, sadly not much fruit came out of it. What India does need most crucially is state of the art indigenous engine propulsion technology and an indigenous aircraft with the ability to supercruise. This factor as you said the greatest limiting factor and the weakest link in the chain for Indian technological self- sufficiency.

I like this video because you did point limitations at the same time focused on the core objective of the program. Build capabilities in aero space to reduce reliance on other countries. Tejas is a test bed for learning and each version iteratively will be more indigenous, better and delivered quicker if funding keeps coming. Kaveri engine is still a few steps behind as they have had problems with thrust to weight and thrust variations with altitudes but hopefully they can partner with someone who can resolve these..

For us tejas is a huge success in some areas we failed depended on foreign tech such as radar,cockpit engine,but indigenous solutions are on the way we have built radar named uttam, glasse cockpit has been designed and developed for mk2 ..but we knw that we are lagging behind in engine technology with the collaboration of a foreign firm it will be solved. For us tejas is a big success may be tejas have not advanced as European or US fighters but tejas gave us the directions to another level...unlike china we didnt revers engineered the tech and most interesting thing is tejas has no crash till now

I totaly agrea that the knowledge created by Tejas is the Tejas largest contribution. I do however think that Tejas Mk2 is the solution to the problem, the Tejas MK1 lacks vesential capabilities in some areas it lacks the same things as Jas C. The largest fault is the absence of a IRST capacity it also need a better radar to be able to detect enemies at at least 150 km.

LCA Tejas is small but it does the job for which it is made. Afterall it is more accurate even than Mirag 2000. It's service availability is unmatched in the inventory of IAF. It is also a secure aircraft to fly because it is not crashed for a single time since it's first flight. That's why it is a success.

They try to develop everything, but what they can't at the time they bought (and analyzed-reverse engineered) or have been cooperating to develop to make their own variant in the future.
