TEKKEN 7 Kazuya Advanced Techniques 4: Dealing With Sidesteps

Great tutorial Mainman, this is Kazuya's biggest weakness next to the fact that he has no reliable mid poke. Other Kazuya moves that catch opponents sidestepping to their left are: 1+2: Kazuya's fastest mid but unsafe at -14 on block, it will catch SS opponents MOST of the time even if they're sidewalking but it's not 100% reliable, it's a weird move, only use this if you need a faster option but I still wouldn't recommend it. Just know that it hits SS opponents most of the time. SSR+1+2: This high punch also catches opponents but you have to sidestep in the same direction as the opponent for it to hit. If you add the SS animation necessary to do this move it will be about as fast as doing a simple b+4, the only benefit of this move is that it doesn't require a counter hit for knockdown and it also guarantees a f,f+4 follow up for extra damage whereas b+4 requires a counter-hit for guaranteed extra damage. f,f,f+3 or While Running+3: Let's not forget the slash kick, you will see this move from a lot by high level Korean players using Kazuya because it tracks opponents sidestepping to their left 99% of the time (email Harada), it's long range, and it gives frame advantage (false positive). d+4: Never forget the basics. d+4 will always catch an opponent sidestepping to Kazuya's weak side. Just keep in mind that even if you hit with this move you are at a -2 disadvantage so you don't have real frame advantage and it's mostly negligible but still very important to remember. Honorable Mentions: f,f+4: This will catch opponents sidestepping to their left if you DON'T do it too fast. Do f,f+4 at its normal speed and the first forward you press will realign Kazuya with your opponent and then the rest of the move will hit. Still not 100% guaranteed, more like 70%. I think this hits because of the hitbox, Kazuya's rightleg kick is on the same side the opponent is sidestepping. Launch on counter-hit. f, n, 4: This one is my favorite. Just like the move above, if you know your opponent is sidestepping a lot, a quick tap of forward will realign you with your opponent (you only need one extra frame to do this), and standing 4 will actually hit if they try to do anything. Again, my theory is that this is because Kazuya's hitbox on his right leg is on the same side the opponent is sidestepping. This is Kazuya's magic 4 that guarantees a launch on counter hit. f, n, 2,2: This is also like the above move but I wouldn't recommend it considering f, n, 4 is the same speed at 12 frames startup and it's safe whereas this move (2, 2) is jab punishable on block and doesn't guarantee a juggle on counter-hit. The only benefit is that if it's not a counter hit then you do significantly more damage than a single f, n, 4.

there is other some moves of kazuya which have some tracking properties: -ss1+2 -db4 tracks well (especially with the opponent side steps before you attack) -ff4 is not that linear (it is not easy to side step that move) -fc3+4 tracks both side -2,2 can track in some situations -df3,2,1 is not easy to side step -1+2 is good too The strategy to counter side step is either let the immediate timing go, or make a side step or a wavedash.

I love these tutorials. I've been playing some Tekken 7 to get ready for 8 (learning electrics and movement etc). These tutorials have helped me preload knowledge at a lower rank. I'm not at a rank where I really need this tip yet, but every-now-and-then I play someone that steps and when they do I at least have some immediate knowledge of how I should adapt. Thanks for this! I think it's important to note that the timing on 1,2,4,3 after CH df+2 is pretty tricky on female characters -- it works most reliably on big manly characters.

I have't actually gotten to play tekken 7 yet, so this may not apply, but it worked in previous games: After a KD, I'll sometimes walk forward and do right ax (f+4) kick as they get up. In older tekken games it was +5 (in tt1 i think was actually +11 or something crazy like that) on block, but now it's +3 or +4. There's a slight risk they will try to getup kick you, but if they go low and you block in, they will get punished big time, so that's why it's only slightly risky. In reality if you time it right the f+4 will be coming down and interrupt whatever they try to do, so they will probably try to block it, at which point you will be at +3 or +4, so you could they chance throwing out a slower move which would end up beating a jab (and possibly get you a CH) if your opponent tried to poke with their fastest move (nothing is faster than 10 frames in tekken, except reversals, so no striking move [there may be some exceptions to this be it's generally true; in older tekken games there were 8 frame left jabs). Of course, as always, don't get predictable with it, or your follow up after a blocked f+4. If you do something unsafe after blocked f+4, thinking they will try to poke you with a fast move but instead they keep blocking, you might end up getting punished. However, if they are very afraid of the f+4 on block you can sometimes get away with doing unsafe things because they will simply continue blocking to try and "ride out" your pressure game. F+4 is one of Mishimas' best moves, period (too bad Devil Jin doesn't have it though...)

You mentioned ws12... nice. Also, you dont need to perfectly cancel Wave to ws12 correctly. You can also do a Wave~f~db~n~12 or Wave ~ f~df~n~12 which are waaay easier and just as fast as a Wave~f~d~d/f~n~b12 cancel. Easy and gets the job done. Other honorable mentions that track - - Universal d4, cd3+4, Wave 11 12 series, Wave~n~22 tracks amazingly well and only - 10. Misc Tracking moves that track partially - - Wave u3 or uf3, Wave ff4.

yes. A very small number of tekken players can do it semi consistently but it's worth it. I'm at about once every 10-15 times for df 2 pewgf and when it hits, it's really satisfying. It's not even about winning or losing more matches. It's just fun. Besides, practicing for better execution is never a bad thing. This is a skill that carries over to other characters and even other fighting games, after all.

Yo MM, do you have any tips for using crouch dash > WS+4 as a poke? I know this is a crucial technique for mishimas (and even King), but it seems too elaborate a command to use for pokes as opposed to a single direction+button press poke. Maybe I'm not fast enough?

I'm not sure if this is your problem but maybe I can help. You don't have to do the back press cancel to get a wr+4 to come out, if you let go of a direction after doing the crouch dash and then quickly press 4 Kaz will do wr+4. Also maybe you are using the moving to closely to the opponent, its not a tactic you should apply right up in their face usually want to use it when you are at around mid range-ish, at closer range a standard df+4 should do. Hope this helps

You should correct your frame data, you are getting mixed up with some block frames. f,f+3 is -3 on block, not 0. Other than that, I like this Kazuya series. Twin Piston first hit can get stepped, but second hit tracks fully to SSL.

Here's one of my tips vs people who likes to SSL my kazuya a lot. Use 1 (+1on block) into ewgf as fast as possible. You can try it on practice mode vs alisa who has a nice ss, you'll see its really hard to step and hits a lot of times. Of course some people can try to interrupt the ewgf with a fast move. Then begins the evil part, you can do jab into 4, that will CH many options and lead to a free combo (but its a high). :)

SSL and SWL destroys all Mishimas. Here is a quick Anti SSL Guide - - Note: All moves must be done out of a wavedash for better tracking since Wavedash partially realigns opponents. Some moves such as Kaz uf3 and Djin uf4 track depending on the opponents extent of side step. Kazuya : All homing moves, ws4, d4, ff4, u3, uf3, 11, 12, 22, ws12, cd3+4. Djin : All homing moves, ws4, 11 12, bf21, ws2, d4, uf4, CD3 low. Hei: All homing moves, ws4, 11 12 (1b2 doesnt track so well), df11, d4, ws1, ws2, ff2, CD44(double low), CD3 low.
