Aand this is my biggest issue with sidestep in this game: it's so hard to learn when the results are so incredibly inconsistent. I wish they had some indicators or anything to just confirm that "your step was correct, but something else got in the way", or "you stepped to the wrong direction". At the moment I have to straight up guess if my decision was correct or not.

I think people can add sidewalk to their defensive options. In some cases it can be an option select, but by sidewalking you let yourself a lot more vulnerable to homing attacks & delayed attacks(e.g. have Bryan's b+1 blocked...pause for a second... then go for a Jet Upper).

Great content! you be surprised 80 percent players online dont know how to side step properly, unlike Virtua Fighter! the side stepping in Tekken is very unreliable and unresponsive. Also keep note that it takes 3 frames to side step and you cant side step when at minus more than 6 frames. in the neutral side stepping is none existent and depended on timing of your opponents attacks.

began playing tekken for some months and lateral movement is a nightmare to me. instead of making it as intuitive and reliable as possible, so new players can learn it, they just nerfed it as hard as possible without just straight removing the mechanic. the result is new players just giving up and neglecting it completely and experienced players just abusing moves that are countered by lateral movement. it was made to "close the gap" and ended up making it bigger. genius design 😆

@@gustavogoesgomes1863 excatly you hammered the nail on the sweet spot. Because side stepping is difficult to learn most players neglect it completely and just play the game horizontally which in turns cause more bad habbits, but your right tekken needs a better tutorial on the mechanics

Tbh the smart way to approach T7 is playing it 2D. Meaning, backdash and dash-ins do miracles and are miles safer than SS. SS is extremely risky due to the game being inconsistent. Yes, there will be random trackings and hell, you'll be launched sometimes while on the BACK of the opponent. If you play competitively 2D movement always triumphs over 3D in T7.

I'd disagree massively, but maybe you play eddy lol. I play King, and SSR into guard beats all of my moves other than generic d4 😅. Meanwhile if you only backdash you'll rarely make anything wiff, lose positioning and then I get to bully you with things like CH shove into a wall combo. The smart play is to do what you know will beat the options your opponent is using. You'll find in many situations a small sidesteps into guard has no downside and option selects more than a backdash.

I think the SSL/SSR chart is totally helpful for beginners who lacks matchup knowledge to start doing SS/SW since it's promoting doing SS in the first place. I mean, they search it for a reason, don't demotivate them trying to search become better. Once they got hit by the specific thing that is different with the chart, they'll remember the move much more (such as the jack example).
@tytk
@tytk Жыл бұрын
No one is demotivating anyone. The sidestep charts are bad because most of the time they are inaccurate and don’t actually teach you anything about movement. It just encourages random movement which doesn’t help anybody improve, they’ll just be confused due to lack of info

And this is why they should change the system. How is a new player supposed to know a move only tracks close range at +1? I like the idea of sidesteps, but they really need to make them more consistent so you don't randomly get clipped. They should also make it clear to the player which side to sidestep. Also moves shouldn't ever track to both sides unless homing. And don't say lab. Most people don't have 100 hours to spend just to be able to participate.

@Vhaanzeit

As someone that played Tekken 7 since release and got quite into it, I sympathise entirely. There is another reason why sidemovement in general is still incredibly important not just for dodging purposes which becomes complicated fast as you have experienced. Sidemovement in neutral is what allows you to maintain specific distances from your opponent where you want to be at your own whiff punish range or just outside of theirs. If all you do is backdash or run to range 0, or mindlessly sidewalk with no reason, you will miss out on your best keep out tools being effective or the ability to punish your opponent for being lazy and whiffing. This still requires matchup knowledge, but being semi conscious of your own character's best range and using side walks and side step block cancels to keep a desired range will allow you to succeed better at the game. This fact is overlooked in a lot of videos I feel and isn't discussed. In games like Street Fighter, it's a bit easier to maintain specific ranges than in Tekken due to the 2D environment.
@deeziusnutsicanus3852
@deeziusnutsicanus3852 Жыл бұрын
"Most people don't have 100 hours to spend just to be able to participate." you dont have to. you'll naturally face players at your own skill level in online play, so if you don't have time to lab you'll face similar level opponents. That doesn't mean we should remove the complexity from the game. It's rewarding to very serious players to spend a lot of time labbing, and they should be rewarded for that invested time.

Ngl, the sidestep guard tip is helpful, but the whole video came off pointless for me. All I really saw was failing to show the effectiveness of your own advice. The moment sidestep/guard stopped working with SSR on df2, the teaching lesson went downhill. Everything at the end gets summarized as “just know the matchup” when that’s what most ppl are struggling with. To me that’s just “memorize the whole game”. Since the beginning, the lesson example was “do this when you know x move is coming out”- but the core issue is that you never know what will come out, right? So when you don’t know what’s coming out, how do you consider when is a good time to sidestep? That is the main question. Im not trying to build an argument around “nothing works because there’s a counter option for everything”. But sometimes I want Tekken teachers to acknowledge that you never know what’s coming out, and things might not work, as supposed to this video which wants to proudly show how sidestep guard is a great option, then shows 5 straight minutes of why it isn’t. The core question “how do I know when to sidestep” has NOT been answered (correction, it WAS answered but it doesn’t give me a place to start. I haven’t moved from the place I was stuck at). Across countless Tekken tutorials, everything just gets blanketed with “know the matchup”.
@tytk
@tytk Жыл бұрын
I'm confused on how you felt that way during the video especially considering the fact that I used the fact that I was wrong about the ssr vs df2 as an example of how tracking should be labbed. Moves track differently at different frames, different spacings, etc. we learned that in the video. Also, the sidestep guard never stopped working vs DF2. The point of the video is that sidestep guard effectively lets you sidestep and make things whiff while also keeping yourself safe. We also talked about timing in the video because that is the main point of the video and why the sidestep charts are useless. To sidestep a move effectively, you need to know timing. Hence why I showed an example of Jack doing a move after a 2 jab, and jack doing dashes after a 2 jab to show difficulty with stepping. So yes actually, the question was answered, several times. The answer is, like I said in the beginning of the video, when you have a read on when your opponent is going to do a move. I showed examples of how to lab tracking on moves, and also gave a short example of how timing affects tracking. Not sure what else you were looking for from this video because you are genuinely searching for an impossible answer. Defensive options are always going to be tied to matchup knowledge. There is literally no way around that.

I think I’m frustrated with the structure of this tutorial b/c first I’m studying that SSguard is my safest option but then you go right into a series of df2 catching Dragunov during SSguard right attempt anyway (3:43)… then talking about 2,1 and how normal SS is optimal (which seems to ignore the whole df2 fiasco and the threat of that clipping you)… into talking about how 1 frame affects tracking and even tho we officially confirmed SSR is a good option for df2,there’s still these niche nuances like range or frame data that can kill you. (You acknowledged that you don’t have to memorize all those nuances so that’s fine) Ngl most of the bullets you pointed out in your comment only made sense after you put it in text. Like I’m going back and can see like oh ok yeah, he’s talking about this now. But You say “Timing was the main point of the video”- which is hard to catch when the title is The Importance of Sidestep Guard. There’s a lot of good tips but everything started off with “first you need a read” and ended with “just know the MU”. Which, if that’s a truth of the game, so be it. I acknowledge that there’s no god option that counters literally anything an opponent can do. It’s just though this vid may cover a lot, the segues from topic to topic aren’t really clear and my first impression was that the stuff you were showing wasnt even working. Multiple watches as you just had me to do made it better.. But hey you took this from a stream, and was spitting off the top of your head so I get if there’s some “fluff”.

From my exp most people will just spam safe moves and will check your habits and just change timings on steppable moves therefore the move will eventually track you. What people don't really understand is that side stepping is a "read" meaning you have to guess and commit to it to be effective. I dont really agree that "Tekken7" is a game about movement it's more like a game of spacing where people abuse the hell out of korean back dash because it's the safest thing to do after you block something, because stepping is really risky as well as ducking (micro dash into a punish is a legacy of a past mow Lmao). The fact that people can mash even in the highest lvl of play shows the lack of true movement in this game..

@@tytk Also for your information the reason why you get hit by jacks df2 is because jacks df2 tracks to both sides. It just doesn't track as well to his left side but it tracks enough clip you if you don't commit to full side step and try to block before finishing it. Also, double tap side step with a single frame of sidewalk is always evading it. This is because of active frames and where the hitbox of the enemy and your hurt box are. for the first few active frames, jack tracks to the right then he tracks to the left so if you don't completely get out in the first few active frames you are gonna get clipped. This is the type of knowledge difference I was talking about. If you have to ask "why tf am i getting hit" to yourself then you don't have enough knowledge. I may be an orange rank eddy player (just to be clear I am not) I never have to ask why something hits or doesn't hit I always know how to figure out how and why the game works the way it does and %99.9999 of the time I don't even need to lab anymore to explain basic shit like this.
