yeah… I blame Black Panther’s Killmonger for this. 😭 His hairstyle worked in that film, but I’ve never seen anyone in real life wear that. It’s also funny because he actually had two hairstyles in the movie, but they chose that one! 😆 Should’ve stuck with the locs, tbh.

The very last part regarding fashion styles from previous decades has me thinking why should everyone has to conform whatever trend comes along. One of the many reasons I love video games is how fashion from past decades and centuries make the characters stand out.

Yeah, I agree. Fashion is also very cyclical, especially now; so people should just dress how they want!! It feels like a time capsule looking at video game fashion then because of what characters would wear or what a character designer was inspired by due to the times they were in. It’s so cool!

I remember when I first watched my cousin play Tekken 3 when we were both seven (I joined in shortly after) and we saw Eddy, we were both like - Why does this guy dance in a fighting game? - and we loved using him because you could randomly push the buttons and win! xD Learning about capoeira as a martial art fused with dance was so enlightening and beautiful, and it's wonderful to see how diverse and welcoming Tekken is as a franchise when it comes to the martial arts you can see, the characters and their background and heritage.

Eddy was always a masher character for me loooool but I thought it was also interesting seeing capoeira since I never heard of the style until I played Tekken. Creative liberties aside, it’s very cool seeing different martial arts styles in the game. Interesting. I see why some may like it, though. Personally, His T8 outfit isn’t my cup of tea because it’s over designed and just confusing-what happened to less is more?😅 I think the hairstyle on its own isn’t terrible. However, it doesn’t work here considering he’s always had locs and its a trademark hairstyle for Eddy. That and… it’s so overused. I just think they did that as a cop out to not animate longer hair. 😭 Overall, Eddy is an interesting character. It’s great that they referenced his Brazilian heritage and the history of capoeira as well. I had a better concept in my head for his outfit… but it is what it is! 😆

@@fragmentedpixels yes, absolutely, I do agree with you that Tekken 8 looks for many characters are overdesigned to impracticality, and Eddy's too is a little all over the place, but the color palette is what I really like!

Tekken outfits did get more and more videogamey over time. I miss the simpler and more realistic approach they had during the ps1/ps2 era

sane, here. I think Tekken 2-4 had some of the best and grounded designs. Tekken 5 was cool and then it started to get over designed with… I think Tekken 7? I’m not sure what’s going on with 8… there are some designs I like but it’s kind of a mixed bag.

@fragmentedpixels Imo, it started at Tekken 6 because that's the point where the engine the tekken devs used wasn't cutting edge anymore. That's probably why they went from a more realistic art direction to a slightly more stylized anime direction, a la final fantasy. The same can be said for tekken 7 since they switched to an unfamiliar (and outdated) engine, and the tekken team was broke af. Thus, by the time we got to Tekken 8 where their budget and technology was top notch, it was kinda too late to go back to the older aesthetic

hm, that’s a good point actually. I’d also say it may have to do with Tekken 4’s blunder also, because I think design wise that was great. But the fact it was a complete deviation from Tekken 3’s gameplay was a factor. it also wasn’t familiar to people; it was drastically different from 3. But that’s my assumption when it comes to the artstyle. I think despite that, going forward, they could’ve struck a balance with the fantastical and grounded martial arts. But from T6 onwards it’s been… hm. That may be a topic I may look into one day. 😅

I feel you on this as well. I agree with FragmentedPixels that Tekken 4 really was the peak of the grounded outfits where they looked like things the characters actually would wear out in public and manage to still look good without looking ridiculously anime. I agree with you that it really did start with Tekken 6 because that is when we got characters like Alisa (mismatched outfit disaster) and Lars (ridiculous hair and wannabe superhero cape) and they look anime out the wazoo. I'm personally bias because I didn't like their designs then and I don't like them now but compare them to Tekken 5's newcomers Asuka, Raven, Feng, Lili, and Dragunov and it's like night and day.

Man, Eddy’s Tekken Tag 1 P1 costume will always be my favorite; mostly because of the chain necklaces. Really makes the fit pop. Hopefully they bring this look back as DLC in Tekken 8. I really like how they brought that bling back in Eddy’s Tekken 8 Cheetah look, combining that with his look from his Tekken 3 ending.

Oh, yes! I didn’t think of that when it came to his Tekken 7 look, you just reminded me! It’s great. I love his look in Tag 1 as well; the attention to detail with the jewellery and even the sky blue colour scheme makes it one of my fav looks.

@@fragmentedpixels Absolutely! And I meant to type in Tekken 7 Cheetah costume but I’m glad you got my point 😂. As soon as I saw the bling back in Tekken 7, my mind went strait to TTT1. And yes, the blue was a nice touch and a nice step away from the traditional yellow and green. I’d always pair Eddy up with Nina in TTT1 since her blue cheetah print complimented Eddy’s blue costume.

Yeah, I got it! 😆 Oh yeah, Nina and Eddy had a similar alt colour scheme in Tag 1! That’s actually cool. I agree, I think the blue and white works well on Eddy.

I always love your costume videos as you learn something new such Eddy's capoeira trousers being called abada and noticing cool details. I agree that Eddy does not look good in the Killmonger hairstyle. He looks better with long locs.

Solid takes on Eddy's looks, I feel like his tekken 8 design fell a lil short as well (primarily the hair) the dreads should of been way longer and less accents all over the clothing would of done it justice.

Eddy Gordo, he's an awesome character and it's nice to see you do a video on his looks over the games. If I were to rank them 8. Tekken 8 1player - Pretty much same reason as you. It just looks like a cobbled mess and it sucks to say that because he usually does have nice style but this look here was a complete miss. The hairstyle especially and it's mainly because so many black male characters in recent times have been designed with that hairstyle also referred to as the "Killmonger" hairstyle that was popularized by Black Panther. It's a cool hairstyle in it's own right but it's been way overdone by now to where it's kinda boring to see. I still remember when Eddy's T8 trailer dropped and I was in shock that they gave him that hairstyle lmao, Just NO. I agree with you that they should've just had him have his usual long dreads but make them longer because this? This is just no (though tbh I don't want to see Eddy with shorter hair in general haha). And the outfit just looks like another commenter said that it looks very "video-gamey" and it comes off pretty tacky looking. I agree with you that the best thing about Eddy in his presentation in Tekken 8 is his personality shining where we see him showing off a bit of his interests like his instrument, it really gives us a look into what Eddy may be like when he's not fighting. That aside, this one is easily his worst look hands down and thank god that they at least brought his other outfit back as an alternate haha. 7. Tekken 5 2player - I love 1970s fashion like I shared in your Marshal Law video but as much as I love it, it just doesn't work on Eddy. I can't really see Eddy wearing this kind of style as he seems to prefer more a urban / athleisure style. The outfit itself, I do like but it would look better on someone like Marshal Law or Tiger, not so much Eddy lol. 6 Tekken 8 2player - So I'll just admit right now that I'm not a huge fan of the athleisure look in general but putting aside my own personal fashion tastes and just judging on the look alone, I agree with you that this outfit actually looks good for Eddy and a lot better than the 1player look. The hair is still a "no" but the outfit is definitely a step up and manages to not look as "video-gamey" as his primary look goes and if they gave him his signature hairstyle with it, it would be a completely solid look for sure. Thankfully you can just give him his T7 hairstyle and that fixes the problem haha. 5. Tekken 4 - I really like how relaxed this outfit looks and I can totally see Eddy wearing this on a relaxing weekend just hanging out on the beach with Christie or by himself just catching the ocean breeze. I do agree that they should've included his sunglasses as it would've looked really cool (and scream 2000s in the best way haha). 4. Tekken 3 2player - Like I mentioned before, I'm not the biggest fan of the athleisure style but when it comes to Eddy, it's clear that he likes that aesthetic and he does rock it well. What I like about this outfit is just how 90s it is lol Every time I see it, I get transported back to like 1996/1997 and it's such nostalgic feeling. 3. Tekken 7 1player - Okay so I'm not gonna lie, I really like this look for Eddy and it's my most favorite of his when it comes to his casual style. I'll just say it, I think he looked really hot here (what who said that? LOL). It has that suave but laid-back type of feeling to it. Flashy but not in a completely gross gaudy way. Well scratch that, I'm sure some would think him wearing cheetah print is "gaudy" but I personally like it and I think he pulls it off well. If I had to criticize anything, I would've removed the rings because they do feel a bit much but as a whole, it's not all that distracting and I just can't help but really like this outfit a lot and I'm not mad that they brought it back in Tekken 8 haha. 2. Tekken 3 1player - I love this look. I love it a lot. It's one of the designs that really stood out in Tekken 3 and I'm so glad that they kept it as one of his main looks for as long as they have where you saw how it transitioned over the years though in Tekken 7, I hate how they reduced the bell-bottom shape of his Abada pants where they instead, went for a more all around baggier look, I'm definitely not a fan of that tbh. Anyway I love a man who's not afraid to wear a crop top and it just looks really good on him imo, people can joke that it looks "gay" but as a gay man myself, my comment to that is "And?" lol Besides, I know there are some women out there who don't mind it and in fact, even like it so there's that. All in all, this outfit is amazing and iconic. Great clothing choice, great memorable color scheme. Just all a great look for him. 1. Tekken Tag Tournament 1player - Like Tekken 4, I like how relaxed this look looks and I think that the white and blue colors for the pants look very nice on him. I still remember when I first saw this look way back in the day and being blown away by how gorgeous the texture work on his pants was, it was one of the examples of how the technology from PS1 graphics advanced into the PS2 era, it was beautiful lol. And ignoring the chain, the whole outfit just looks very comfortable and I can't help but find it to be Eddy's best look as it mixed his traditional style (his Capoiera pants) with a nod to his taste in urban fashion (the chain and sunglasses), a really nice balance.

thanks for the rankings! these insights were cool. Yeah, I can see why you’re not the biggest fan of athleisure, but I think they struck a nice balance on the design without looking dated. I feel like that ‘fit would definitely be something a person would wear today, considering how things are coming back in fashion. I’d say Eddy’s best looks are when they’re the most casual and/or relate to his capoeira training, like his looks in T7, T4 and T3. I actually didn’t notice that they reduced the bell bottom shape of the abadá trousers; that’s interesting. I agree with the T8 player 1 design… it’s so bad 😭 but I’m glad they nodded to his Afro Brazilian heritage, referring to the berimbau and even his rage art. I thought that was neat! Overall, I think the team need to go back to the drawing board with his current design. His looks from 3, 4, 6 and even 7 were great. What happened? LOL.

But yeah, no hate to those who like athleisure fashion, I've just always been someone who preferred more alternative or androgynous type fashion s all haha. And with Eddy, athleisure fits his character so I'm not mad at it at all lol Yeah I didn't notice the reduced bell-shape until I was messing around with Eddy in the customization and when I put him in his Abada outfit, I noticed something felt "off" lol And right, T8 outfit, what were they thinking? It's clear that his presentation was done beautifully well, just not his design and I hope that in Tekken 9, they ditch the Kilmonger hair and go back to his regular dreads, please! lol
