I believe the monk was training his body to be strong enough to be possessed by hehachi soul, in some sort of blood moon resurrection ritual preformed by Reina, I think the fight between Jin and kaz weakened the barrier between life and death . This is why he declares “ I AM hehachi Mishima!” Not I’m back . It’s the victorious heihachi claiming he assimilate the monk and has become whole, this is a Leo why he looks older than 7 but not his young tag 2 self .it’s the old hehachi in a younger sacrificial body
