Tekken 8 Ranked Is Just Bad (Rant)

For me, the community was a big factor. Most players you run into are not interested in learning the game or having a good time even though it’s a video game. Just as you mentioned, the WiFi warriors and pluggers/ one and doners are a major issue. There was a time where if you plug on the title screen, the opponent loses the points which is actually bs. The game it self is a step up from Tekken 7 but it still has a lot of work to do for someone like me to play again. (Or if Miguel comes back). But I would be interested in you making a series for this topic.

One and done is whatever for me, at least they let me grab my points before they leave. It can be more frustrating than it used to be, since the FGC, mostly Tekken and SF went through a huge playerbase growth with the new games and it skyrocketed the number of one and dones due to the very casual players who decided to stick around. Pluggers at least lose their points now + ones with ver high disconnection rate still get banned so that’s something at least. Idk about others, but i barely see any ever since their precious virtual points are on the line. Wifi warriors though… i don’t even accept wifi matches. Their connection might be okay and the match might be enjoyable, but i’m not even risking it. Idk how Capcom managed to make the wifi matches so good in SF, but Bandai certainly didn’t ask them. I don’t know what’s so hard in buying a damn cable if they want to play fighting games. Surely it would be better than ruining even their own experience…

NGL I always felt TEKKEN in terms of ranked has always been a joke. Boosting, plugging, cheating and the state of balance. It makes it all a clown fest and T8 makes it more of a party game and all ranks are very achievable but the community...why I got TG and quit. Also I want to add this reminder "emergencies can happen". One and doned 3 times so far in T8 ranked. Why? My mom had a serious fall and had to go to the emergency. The other game had a fatal error and the final I had a black out in my area. I know not always this will happen but...this shows you how bad it's gotten for people to have little faith and the inability to give the benefit of a doubt. Sadly real Tekken is still played offline and in customs.

I've had a rollercoaster ride through the Tekken 8 ranks. I climbed to Battle Ruler, only to drop down to Shinryu, then worked back up Fujin, only to drop to Tenryu. I fought my way back to Raijin, then fell to Flame Ruler before reworking and reaching Bushin. Then losing a lot & returning to Battle Ruler. Today, I achieved Tekken King with Kazuya, and I'm content with that. This is my first Tekken, and I've faced many challenges. I respect high-level players, but I've learned my lessons the hard way. I'm happy to be at Tekken King and won't pretend to be a pro or get overly frustrated by losses to lower or higher ranked players (though I admit I sometimes do).

I focus all my energy on drawing and getting better at it. The communities just pushes me away from competitive gaming. The more toxic the community, the drive to play becomes slim and drop the game completely. When my friends try to convince me that if I don’t focus on winning rank can be fun. That’s a lie. I just don’t like games that feel like work. It’s why I pick up platformers because they don’t judged you if you lose or get a game over and you can always try again at your pace. And I don’t need wi fi to play the game.

I earned my rank. It is a badge that shows how far you got and something you can be proud of. I'm about capped out fighting basically 250k prowess every time, no matter if it's my main or a sub. I am not trying to sweat every game I play and at a certain point, it isn't worth the stress. It is absolutely frustrating playing like it's a tournament every time I want to go into ranked, even on a sub character. Not to mention the 1 and done people, the pc players literally lagging the game whenever I get them in the air, or straight up using mods to help them win. One should not have to literally produce sweat and adrenaline dump when they go on ranked. The dread and anxiety that goes along with selecting Ranked Match is not worth it half the time. I know you know what I am talking about.

It’s from one of the patches a while ago that if you’re playing quick match, you’re getting people close to or within your rank bracket and tekken power. So keep that in mind, you’ll most likely be going to quick match playing with the same intensity of ranked but just with no points. It’s not like 7 where it literally put you up against anyone with any rank. It does this so you can continuously find people around your rank/skill level.

I believe that the best way to stop one and done is to make it where u have to run the set. I do not fault the players who one and done, because the game rewards it. Why learn the matchup when u get rewarded for fighting people who don't know the matchup.

Not everyone can run ethernet to their console or PC especially if you live in shared accommodation across the house, these days WiFi 6 wireless or higher is literally 1ms or less addition compared to ethernet with comparable jitter, ethernet over wifi may have been a for sure thing a few years ago but not really in 2025 2.Wish infinite rematches were back too, but expecting people to rematch every time is just silly, the whole purpose to queuing ranked is trying to climb as much as possible (without cheating or plugging of course.) Do you really expect someone to rematch a guaranteed loss against someones smurf with triple their tekken prowess? No because nobody owes them a free win. Want people to keep rematching on loss to learn the matchup and practice their game? Thats what quickplay is for

If you are climbing the ranks you can’t avoid those high ranking players forever. I do criticize them the game for me being able to beat on scrubs. Tekken 8 players complain that ranked is too sweaty because they have to constantly fight people with the same prowess as them.

Im pretty new to tekken and the FGC in generall, but seeing how ppl will only rematch if they win was kinda weird. So far i only had one guy loose and rematch me. It was the most fun i had on this games ranked mode. I share the oppinion that ppl only care about the rankednumber and not actually enjoying or progessing in the game. Its like that for a lot of games recently. The more mainstream attention a game gets the more its flooded with ppl who just play because everyone else does so the only thing they enjoy is getting a quick dopamine hit from the "you won" screen and the imaginary number goin up. It ruins the experience because these ppl usualy bring a lot of negativety and toxicity to these games. I knew a few ppl like that and everytime we played tougether i was like "why are you even playing this game, you dont enjoy this type of game" but its like they dont even think about what their doing or how it effects them and everone they play with. PS: rly enjoyed the calmness this video has despite being a "rant"

Tekken isn't a game like League where you can ban characters and never have to fight them so not wanting to learn how to deal with a match up is kinda whack imo unless you play the game once in a blue moon. Infinite rematches are good for learning how to adapt over a period of time so it should at least be in casual match, in ranked it somewhat incentiveses farming/cherry picking which is what most players do anyway. If you reach a rank and just wanna chill there, I think that's fine as long as you don't have an ego about it. Ranked is more of a time dump than a resource for improving if you ask me

People cant be soft in this game. I just look at every character in front of me as a body. one and done, ki charge, i dont care. You have to be mentally strong or you will literally not progress in this game. And I do believe nobody owes me a rematch. Just a game, not worth getting upset over when someone leaves.. It's ranked. It's you vs. everyone else. If you want to win, why give your opponent ANY chance to adapt to your play style? You got the upper hand. I don't see any benefit of allowing your opponent to have an opportunity to take back what you've won. Tactically that makes no sense. You're in a battle for a ranked position. You don't owe anybody anything, except your win. That's the cut throat nature of ANY ranked game. And there's nothing wrong with that logic. I didn't agree to any formal sportsmanship or any formal arrangement where I have to give you another chance. This is why I don't play ranked. I just play casual and it's a blast. I'll maybe play ranked if I get really good at a character but I'm not looking to get to the very top at all. Remember, if you lost, and you don't get your rematch, you're in no position to complain. You lost. It's your fault. Your opponent is under no obligation to give you the chance to figure out his battle plan. None.

And if I choose not to, I just get the normal payout. And how about, if you lose, you don't lose points, or very little. Why you want to punish success is beyond me.

Tekken 7 had infinite rematches? Never noticed despite playing for nearly 2k, everyone would one and done either because of the character I play or because they hate playing turtles. Jokes aside, while I've had my share of death matches, the amount of ones and dones and plugs I've been dealing with back in T7 was to such an extent to the point where it makes no difference for me that T8 isn't death matches, and yea, I was around Emperor back then as well, with multiple character, but I've gotten more complaints about my playstyle than rematches. Imho, ignoring my own experience, I think both death matches and the current ft2 system have their goods and bads. Sure, being able to death match gives you a lot more time to adapt to the opponent, but that also creates people who don't take the first bunch of matches "seriously" because they have time to adapt later, and also makes a lot of people ignore matchups. I know quite a bunch of people who reached TGP and similar and admitted they don't know matchups outside of their own characters, because they don't lab, they just focus on getting down the timing of the opponent and counterhitting them to death. On the flip side, ft2 will kill you if you don't know matchups, it forces to actually bother learning them, and you can't just go "I have time to adapt to the opponent", you gotta drop the dial-up connection and get something faster if you want to download the opponent before the set ends, but at the same time, this does make mixups and knowledge checks more powerful, because again, you need some time to download the opponent, the first match against, say this particular Kazuya, you don't know how he prefers his vortex, and if you lose two matches, you don't have the chance to run it back unless you meet him again (that's the main reason why Kazuya is my most hated character from back in T7, matches against him never felt won/lost because player skill, just cointosses because they don't rematch) So I guess it all comes down to personal preferences. If you really want to improve and get good, and maybe even do some tournaments, the ft2 is the better system because it forces you improve, you can't take your time, and yes, you can get "robbed" by a stray 50-50, while for those that don't want that type of pressure and just fight that one player until you completely download them, then T7's system would be better but that also makes people more clumsy, hence all the complaints from back then about "not getting the chance to download the opponent". So yea, IMHO, there is is no "T7 ranked is better" or "T8 ranked is better", as unless you're me, they each have their own good points.

This is one of the best comments on this video and I could agree more. FT2 in ranked makes sense and adds a sense of urgency. I think infinite rematches should be a quick match thing if you want to learn a match up in real time after labbing without all the extra pressure.

If I were to take a guess, it's maybe because they see quick matches as a "Ranked Lite" where the only difference is that there's no points on the line, but in that case, just create a 2nd QM, and then you have the Ranked Lite one for those who want to practice that without worrying about points, and you have the one with death matches for those who want that. Ranked should remain ft2.

I agree with you and I've made the decision to stop playing against wifi players altogether because for the most part, they have a false sense of pride that comes from 1 and done wins with laggy connections. And when I check their stats , their defense is usually in the 40-50 range which is crazy for blue ranks. But that's just how the game is now smh

I think you should only receive the points AFTER the set. Instead of receiving them after one match, that will encourage people to finish! If you decide to leave after one game you should sacrifice your points to the opponent and leave empty handed

So I think it's funny because I have a really specific experience as someone on WiFI with a wifi card in a PC that gives me a really strong connection but still has the game label me as a wifi player in that the pool of people I play with is wildly different. like I've seen 1 plugger in 200 hours because I'm sure they all avoid me in the first place, but I'll see a fair few one and dones from people. I'm also kinda forced into the wifi trenches with these people on the ps5 wifi that's absolutely awful. For those that are like me and do not want a 100 foot ethernet cable in your house, if you're on PC, buy a wifi card. if you're on console, buy a wifi extender. We're in 2025, wifi isn't shit, your setup is. Unless you live like way out in the middle of nowhere, but at that point like ethernet isn't saving you. A good wifi card isn't that expensive (mine was 50$) and the difference from having a wifi card in your computer vs a usb one or a built in one is MASSIVE. You can lookup a youtube vid about how to install it, it's easier than you think, you pretty much just slide it in, screw it in with a thumb screw, attach the antenna, and make sure you discharge your static electricity by touching some metal beforehand. anyway, yeah, Ranked will always be cursed like this until there's a significant penalty against it, just like with plugging (bare minimum 30 min ban for a one and done or automatically losing the bo3, if I'm pulling from other competetive games), but like, join a community and play games with regulars, ya know? If you're not looking to try your hardest in the trenches the one huge advantage fg's have is that you just have to find 1 other person to play casuals and relax. You can join whoever streamer's discord and find matches across all kinds of time zones, or any other online community to find matches where you can hang out and actually talk to the person you're playing with to learn more or to just have a good time.

It’s crazy, I just started on this game after not playing a tekken for years and I never heard of half of this. Tbh at first I didn’t rematch people but then I was like. Even if a dude solidly beat my ass, I’m gonna try again. And if I beat someone, they deserve a chance for a comeback. Now that I’m reading this, I’m glad I don’t one and done. One and done only hurts the experience for everyone. There is no reason to do it other fragile ego because if you think about it mathematically it doesn't even help you climb. You will run into the same player again eventually and they will get the 2-0. So whatever you think it's supposed to do, it doesn't. All you're doing is putting players back in queue or loading screens. Then you'll be scratching your head wondering why you're waiting more than 5min to find a game.

I think you're giving people a little to much credit. Your opinion valid but i disagree a certain points. If your someone who plays like an absolute bot im not running it back. If someone is lagging im not running it back. I personally dont play too much ranked im a flame ruler, and im fine with it. I beat high blues and purples all the time. Ive had people tell me I play like a Raijin It means nothing. I get more irritated by sus players in really low ranks when you trying to learn a new character. Player may be a green rank or have 50k prowess with a 20-40 win streak.

Like Jesus Christ 🤣everyone plays tf outta that mode like their entire life depends on it lol I get the “feel good feeling” that people wanna win and rank up but yo people be going way too overboard like I know I sound like a salty whiny loser but every single player I encounter on ranked feels like I’m going against TAS players like nobody gives me a chance to f-ckin breath in the match and even get all three perfect rounds on me and i be questioning how tf does someone sit down and learn how to utilize tf out of the game. Like Tekken is not a game where you can play one day then go three weeks without playing it and still have the same exact play style from the last time they played the game. Although I know a lot of players have so many years of experience of playin TEKKEN. Yeah Ranked feels like a mode where you’re going to work for the day, not a mode to enjoy and have fun, you have to be sweating your ass off like you’re in the gym lmao But I will admit sometimes when I’m getting annihilated my play style starts becoming panicky and I’ll start pressing random buttons without thinking and that was causes me to become very predictable and that’s how players easily adapt to me. Especially I’m a King player and he’s a very popular character and many players know how to easily adapt to his fighting style.

I understand that nobody owes anyone anything and stuff, but IN RANKED you MUST rematch especially if you've lost. Otherwise I just assume that you're a beachmade grifter who one-and-dones and block everyone you lose to in order to scam the ranked system. If you dont feel like playing a broken and easily abusable cesspool that is RANKED or because Blue Ranks 2.0 - its fine! You've got lots of other online modes like player and quick matches, lobbies, lounges etc. But coming to RANKED which is THE ONLY COMPETITIVE mode in the game and pussying out after the first time you get your shit pushed simply means you're not ready for these stakes (which are non-existant imo, but some people seem to base their human value on the stupid PNG of a stupid game nobody will remember after a few years, which aint healthy either).

5:35 THIS! I have been screaming this for so long. How can you afford a PS5 (or even better a PC) and TEKKEN 8 and not have a basic ethernet cable? Sure there are some people that can't reach their setup because of the layout of their house. But I refuse to believe that so many people have that problem. On the topic of rematches, I don't understand how Bamco managed to mess it up this badly. If they wanted a best of 3 format (which I personally prefer for ranked, I think infinite rematches should be in quick matches tho) why would you let people leave early, AND punish them less for it? It makes no sense! Maybe you could dish out the points after the set is finished? Like a person wins 2 games and THEN gets the points? Or if one person leaves early you could give the other person the points? I also dislike the win/loss streak system. I think that it's a bad idea since it doubles down on promoting people to leave early, when they barely managed to get a win (or if they got stomped on), to try their luck on another matchup. If the whole point of the format was to make us play a set, then make us finish that set (IMO). And seriously Bamco, how have you STILL not found a solution for pluggers? You have had this problem since Tekken 6 (to my knowledge, for all I know it could have been even before that). FFS...

Gonna have to retract what I said concerning pluggers. Seems that we got a remedy a few weeks ago (patch 1.10) which I happened to miss. Also I seem to be misremembering, it seems that TEKKEN 6 did penalize pluggers (according to the old AF forums that I read) but TEKKEN Tag Tournament 2 for some reason didn't (still a little unclear, but I remember for a fact that TEKKEN 7 never had a penalty for plugging)? But my other points still stand.

The game is broken and even if your a good player you'll get bored because once you realize rank is just a sticker and the game is broken and people lagging switching and using scripts and people not using their brains its straight 50-50 spam and u can’t step or duck or block you die for anything in tk8 which makes the game boring. I stopped playing once i got the rank i wanted and i mastered my main but i do my drills everyday and log off and play something else theres times when you win it doesn't feel like you earned it unless your fighting a legacy player. Losing points in rank is fine but getting demoted feels like your getting punish for losing and learning which is terrible because if you want to keep playing rank and rematch you will be punished instead it should be a up hill battle.

I do get alot of the points. the one I slightly disagree on is on ethernet. not everyone can use an ethernet cable. For example I live in a rented household and where my office is which is where my gaming setup sits, I cannot set up ethernet without getting a cable through the wall and around the house which I am not allowed to do due to it being a rented property. I have tried a wifi extender which plugs into an socket then gives you an ethernet cable that way, but it legits makes no difference to when I am on wifi if anything it slows my connection speeds down. money isn't the only thing to consider about ethernet ports if it was then yeah everyone would probably be using ethernet. but also have to take into account the feasibility for some people. Overall great video though!

Simply ran my Ethernet cord from the router and made sure to tuck it alongside the baseboard. Out of site, can’t be tripped over and you don’t even see it until you reach the set up. Just get a 100 or 50ft. I was in the same boat until I realized I didn’t have to drill any holes. Just got a long wire and tucked it alongside the baseboard until I met the router.

Im going tbh i one and done at times just because the gameplay is completely insufferable. You cant play defensely at all even if somehow you can its awful to do. tekken 7 made room for both offensive and defensive style now 8 is nothing but ruthless aggression. The amount of forced 50/50 i have to take is just ridiculous, ill just stick to other games. Tekken 8 isnt made for new or old fans, its made for mindless consumers that dont ask questions just consume product and get excited for next product. After i hit fujin with kazuya not flexing but i just stopped caring completely since. I havent touched this game since 26 of December and have no plans to touch it in the future. Unless it has more defensive options and or turn down heat. Other than that im done.
