You might not know, but Rise of the Underminer spins off into its own alternate canon - It's followed by series of comic books written by acclaimed writer of e.g. Kingdom Come, Mark Waid. The comic is really good, but it ends on a cliffhanger due to cancelation of tthe series.

Ditto. You can really see all the effort that went into making this spin-off, and there's plenty of nice Tekken related Easter eggs scattered about. The graphics and cutscenes all have held up really well, too. Plus, Nina's Rogues Gallery of Villains all leave a lasting impression, especially villainess Lana Lei. Last, but not least, Nina got her iconic voice actress here, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.

Interesting how this game came out shortly after Lifeline, another PS2 game with arcane controls, a mix of fighting and puzzling, and a blond action girl protagonist uncovering some kind of conspiracy with scientists and soldiers and a superweapon. Actually this mostly describes a lot of games.

My dad found this for $5 when I was 11. I played through it during middle school and honestly? I’m probably one of the few people that really enjoyed it. The combat was satisfying for me, especially doing the critical hits and seeing bones shatter, good weapon variety and little ol me had a crush on Nina. Hell, this game was probably why I loved playing as Nina in Tekken 5. Looking back, I can see why people didn’t warm up to it and I wonder if I’ll have the same opinions on should I revisit it. I will say, as someone who hasn’t played MGS, I did think about DBD’s similarities to it. This game was probably trying to be a lot of things at once and I for one enjoyed it. Maybe we should have a remake of the game; get a better focus on what the gameplay should be, make changes to the story, there’s lot of potential to be had here. I for one am very willing to see it.

"The characters are too underbaked to really leave an impression." Lana Lei left a strong impression on me. She is basically Kitana meets Freddy Kreuger, right down to taking an insane amount of punishment before finally going down. Also, she gets plenty of character development, slowly going more and more deranged after Nina kills her boyfriend/bodyguard Bryce.

That Harada tweet! I remember when he reposted one of my videos haha (thus why I'm tagged). This game is amazing, I love every bit of it. The controls (which I don't consider bad at all) work fine, the battle system is fun and the camera (although it does cause some issues) is part of the challenge. You need to pick your fight in a good area. To me, someone who played this game a lot, the battle system is absolutely not a bore. It does have issues, but it's an experience. Plus, this game offers amazing visuals and astethics. I highly recommend it 👌 but thats just me :)

I'm probably one of the few who finished this game lol. It can be fun, I enjoyed it despite the awkwardness of the control scheme. Just be prepared to wreck a Dual Shock 2 if you wanna get the most out of this game. Also, the reason why Death By Degrees is going under the radar is because Harada does not consider this game canon to the Tekken storyline.

there really is something about this era of games that gets me feeling some sort of way. games like this and Spy Fiction come to mind where it's like, weird off-brand action games with bits and bobs from more popular franchises and weird still-trying-to-understand-3D-combat combat. as an aside, and not to be all "PLAY THIS GAME"; Spy Fiction would be an interesting thing to look at since it's swery65's directorial debut (the Deadly Premonition guy!) and it's a great example of a "we have AAA game at home" game

I didn't believe it until I went over to New York, but yep a lot of them do claim to be Irish. Some are Irish, some are definitely not, but I don't care to be honest, it's in no way harmful. A lot of them don't have real descendants other than immigrants or people who arrived in to the country, so they like to discover their heritage. None of them are 100% American as that just doesn't exist, the only people who is a 'true american' are the indigenous people who lived there before being murdered, although 'American' would refer to the whole continent rather than to one piece of land within that continent

The only cultural impact this game had was Azealia Banks referencing it in one of her early songs: I’m not the dawn diva I'm beyond ya dawn skeezers I get cake from quick chicks with long heaters *One seven hot stepping like Tekken* *I'mma be a main bitch in a game like Nina*

Technically Ninja Gaiden (2004) was also a spin-off of Dead or Alive.

To be honest for when this came out it looks pretty fun. I am a huge mark for the Tekken series tho so take that for what you will lol.

Oh god, I love this game! I was like 5 when I started to play my first Tekken, which was Tekken 3 and I always absolutely only used Violet Nina (that's how I called the purple first costume of hers), so much so that my brothers told me that the game started to not work because I used Nina too much! And since there I played every single Tekken game. I remember being like 2013/14, I was around 13 and this game was literally impossible to find in Italy, so I bought it off ebay and man, was I a happy kid. I admit it's mostly my nostalgia talking and my love for Nina, but really if you can, just give this game a shot! I like how you explain both the good and the bad, because most say that this game is scheiße, but it's really not!

This sounds more like a case of "we have this weird beat'em up no one will play, let's slap a recognizable license on it so we can sell it and maybe break even".

I really did not like this game when it came out, as a Tekken fan I bought it new, but I sold it a year later, the combat and cutscenes/story was very poor, but I somehow regret selling it as it's not a common game to find.

It's because the ps2 had most often small texture. Even sub 512... When you ramp up the resolution of the rendering all those textures become more visible.

I pretty much never comment on youtube videos, but decided to come and say that I bought this last summer based on this review and actually liked it. It's pretty much like what you said so there is problems, but it was entertaining enough to play. Also got 24 the game and also liked that one and it made me interested about the show. I actually have the first season on my shelf, but never watched it. This week I also got the Dwayne Johnson spy hunter, the first cars game and cars: maternational thanks to your reviews and will play those during the next few weeks so just keep doing what you're doing.

The only thing I remember about this game was the marketing in gaming magazines with Nina in the black dress or swimsuit in...interesting poses. Never knew anything about the game itself until the KZbin game playthrough era, and players said the controls were confusing and the game was hard as hell. Now, this game is nearly impossible to find unless you buy it secondhand from someone trying to charge you far more than the game is worth. I would probably play it now and keep it in my PS2 collection.
