Maybe it isn't just those who have the will of D that die with a smile, but those they have greatly affected. I mean we saw Oden die and we know Roger impacted him greatly. We saw Corazon die with a smile when he saved Law. Hiriluk died smiling but was inspired by pirates, and who started the great pirate age? Roger, so that works as well. Maybe it's like an inherited will thing from joyboy, a smile is a sign of someone having joy.

To me tbh it means more like, the government's ideals go against the ideals of freedom and adventure; Which Oda believes to be the source of happiness. obviously all kinds of artistic media bear a message and some can be buyest propaganda but some are just str8 up a meta conversations between the reader and the author because we are not perfect but some ideals are deemed empirical for us people so much so we go so far to pass it on... Here's a topic that's bothered me for a while now: ever since the incidents on Enies Lobby and the Sabaody Archipelago, how does the Government still believe Chopper is just a pet and only worth 50/100 Berries? Didn't Kumadori, Kalifa, Kaku and Jyabura get to report on that? And didn't Chopper transform right in front of Sentoumaru? Did he just forget it or is there more to it? Does the government have plans for Chopper just like they did for Robin? Please, Tekking, we really need a discussion/theory on that.

And the joke-thing has run its course long ago by now. The 100 Berry follow-up wasn't even funny, just an letdown. Not to mention it makes the government look incredibly ignorant and incompetent if they can track down Nico Robin but cannot manage to put two and two together for another oddly unique member of the Strawhat Crew.

His role has been reduced to cutesy-bait and merchandise, occasionally acting serious, but still always forced to make way for the likes of Luffy or Zoro. Like all Strawhats, he _needs_ and _deserves_ to be seen in a more serious, and appropriate light. Judging by his actions after the timeskip, Sentoumaru obviously cares about how the Strawhats are represented officially, and should especially care about things like bounties, now that he's a marine. It's not that I don't like the joke, it's the fact that's been like this for years now. And that when Oda had the opportunity to put a new spin on it, he shoved it aside to keep milking it. (Can you imagine if they _still_ held on to Sanji's first joke poster, even after Whole Cake Island?) So unless there was some special reason for the low bounty (like Vegapunk wanting to capture and study Chopper to create humanoid weapons or something), this will always keep me from taking the Would Government completely serious.

I feel like they are like for example when a Hollywood star (or something symilar) has a child, most of the time they will try to put them in the same path that they have, and most of the time it works, but there are always exceptions and not everyone follows what they have to do or were supposed to do or be... We have seen characters before that are not from D clan die by accepting their fate with a smile such as Hiluluk and bellmere, Oden's death is another example. So i don't think that someone has to be from the D clan to have this trait, i think being a Dreamer and knowing that your will has already being inherited by others is what makes people have this trait whether you are a D or not. And in hiluluk words "people are only dead when they are forgotten".

So here is my theory on the will of D. I think every D. besides Luffy is there to impact/help Luffy. Think about it. Roger is Luffys "motivation" or Saul helped Robin/impacted Robin and now she is helping Luffy with reaching Laughtale. I am not sure about Blackbeard but maybe he is gonna help/impact him somehow in the future (he already impacted him with capturing ace... But idk :D). So maybe the ones who have the D. in their name are destined to help/impact luffy.

Really enjoy your analysis on the world of One Piece. You and Joy Boy's videos are one of the reason I started to heavily invest in reading ahead of the anime; thank you. Now I have to state that this video is just far too easy therefore there has to be something to it! As the title of the video is "will of smiles" it reminded of another recent reveal to the community the name of the final island.... Laugh Tale..... For sure; if that is the proper translation I can absolutely see Oda making the Will of D. the Will of Smiles because how else does one present a Tale of Laughter?? One begins doing so by having a smile upon their face! I also see there being some sort of way to control the world by taking away genuine smiles, via the world government. We also have again the 'smile' devil fruit which is manufactured and artificial, when successful application is found it turns the eater into a strange Zoan type user. However; if unsuccessful the user is forced into a life wearing a gigantic fake smile their entire life. Now just reflecting also on Oda's writing through each major story line... Having some sort of genuine emotion period, but especially when someone is stripped of joy is one of the major plot devices used to stir up Luffy, and his crew to act! Some sort of horrible thing that is preventing joy is causing them move or go into a specific direction. Of course the simple answer could be the One Piece is the knowledge of the Will of D. and the will is to seek out joy in ones own life. Thereby; that person has all the wealth in the world regardless of how much 'clout' they carry or possessions they own. Look at Rayleigh, Shanks, members of Rogers crew that made it to the final island knowing what is there... they became stewards of a certain lifestyle or way of the world. I'm also certain there will be supporting back story for an alternative to a simple message to readers that they should live a full and happy life.... such as, the celestial weapons, the secrets of the void century, the conducts of the world government, what the hat in Marijois means, … (ooo I found something else...) pronounce that town.... and separate... Merry Jois… Merry Joy!!!! Merriment of Joy! Okay I realize that is a bit of a stretch... but again its Oda... the figurehead of the world government which again is a fake representation of joy and merriment. Each time there has been some sort of fake resolve... Luffy and crew have been there to put a corrective course into affect. Their actions cause a ripple of change, whereas the world government is maintaining 'order and peace' is really just against any sort of change good or bad that rubs against the ways and order of Celestial Dragons. I also notice how Law is very stoic for someone carrying the moniker of D. in his name. We of course read and watched his backstory the flashback with his relationship with Corazon, and celestial dragons... Which of course would cause such a resolve as an adult. But one thing about Law I truly have begun observing more closely is his relationship and reactions to Luffy. Understandably he saved Luffy but said he was doing it as a favor to Shanks... well; not really but as a doctor he is duty bound. And then again recently with the Punk Hazzard Donquixote arc Law sees Luffy as someone who doesn't "act how a pirate should" Now in Wano he outright tells Luffy to act like a pirate, that pirates don't do good deeds. In this; I see Trafelgar Law as a person who symbolizes one aspect of a "Law" in which a conduct of a pirate "should behave".. there as in ideal or mindset of what it means to be a pirate. Luffy has his own, and every captain or figurehead in the world of One Piece has their own idea of what being a pirate is... But there has yet to be a implicit this is how a human, or person, or creature... should behave. So there again I absolutely can see this giant story boiling down to a simple message of how Luffy lives his life and his ways is how most humans should behave, have a short memory for people who did you wrong. If their ways are evil and upsetting others life one should stand up against that tyranny. If there is an overbearing empirical ruler one should still be able to live their own way to follow their desires and dreams. For Luffy being a pirate is freedom of cares and worry, gathered around close friends who will share food and music together. Helping each other because your each others mates on the ship and in life. I also bear in mind too that Oda and the writer for Naruto are companions. I don't know how much they talk or go out on lunches together or share bathhouse time, family vacations...etc... but it was made evident that they admire each other as story tellers and in Naruto specifically he had 'the ninja way' which is similar idea to that of the 'will of d'. Naruto's ninja way slowly infectiously flowed into anyone he came into contact with. His own will was changing the course of the ninja world into aligning to his way. A ninja is someone who never gives no matter how difficult the situation, and if he dies, he dies. But to gain notoriety or fame, or prestige on the backs of someone else and making them suffer, or abusing the life or emotions of someone else to gain power or love is what makes Naruto spark anger and go into his fire of why do you allow this attitude. Now around this simple plot device of Naruto's ninja way we have fluidity in the development of characters and story... the story and purpose of each sharingan had been changed from what originally had been put forth. Some jutsu's had been brought forth and then snuffed out just as quickly. Some items had been eloquently explained as others were just there as a way to further the story.... simple items in the great ninja war that had huge impacts were never fully flushed out.... now as much as I liked Naruto there is also a lot that I dislike and have enjoy One Piece doing a much better job with. Simply put fluidity of continuity between cannon and non cannon story. Now I know that this whole Naruto side bar seems like a rabbit trail.... if I keep typing it will be... but what I bring up is the Ninja way vs Will of D. being very similar in structuring the world around the main character, and likewise the central characters that posses this will structuring the world around them and in such a large impactful way it disrupts the central order that has been in place for generations. Both very different story's but there is too much of a parallel in both worlds that it is hard for me to ignore and bring to your attention. Especially after this video. I also feel that by the end of Wano Arc or sometime thereafter Law is either going to die due to the epic battle that is going to unfold and his actions need to take such an indirect course to claim victory over Kaido that it results in his death. And in so doing he reveals to someone trusted to pass along his knowledge to Luffy about world events. Or a higher likelihood that Law will become a trusted ally who will help propel Luffy to the final island and all the secrets there in... along with Eustess Kid. All three captains squared off together in Cascade... I can see all three again now much more powerful square off against the largest battle they have faced. Helping to preserve and fulfill the will of D, because Luffy is who he is... genuinely all the time... although his character has grown his will towards his end goal has never shook.

I like this concept, it makes more sense that anyone who fights like those of the D Clan can inherit the will. It can never be snuffed out by the World Government in such a way.

I think the smiling when close to death is more related to a general lack of regret and passing of will than being tied to a mission. Luffy was going to be killed by Buggy despite not even having reached the grand line, so his goal of being pirate king and returning Shank's hat was not even close to being accomplished, yet he was grinning from ear to ear.

yo Tekking, what about this: the D stands for Double and all the people with the D in their name are all some kind of clones... Hear me out, Luffy is often refered to as superhuman because of how he heals by eating meat for example. Or Blackbeards Body is said to be more durable than a normal body. But the biggest clue is Germa 66 ! Remember the clone soldiers ? Maybe the Ancient Kingdom had a more developed system of cloning or smth ?? I couldnt write the whole theory here, just some stuff to think about ^^ i did come up with that by myself btw but there is probably already a similar theory out there. gimmi your thoughts :)

I stated this theory before. Ancient original Devil Fruits. The original DF also had the side efffect of always having to smile/laugh. The Celestial Dragons tested their original DF on slaves to get the functioning ones. The descendents of those always laughing/smiling slaves took that smile as an initial. Thats why all members of the will of D are the natural enemies of the Celestial Dragons and close to death the side effects from 800years ago come thru.

Early on with tbe Will of D theiries. I feel as though there's a seperation between people who died smiling, and people who keep smiling even after becoming a corpse. Sal, Ace, Roger all smiled even after death. Though I can't recall other people smiling even after dying. Maybe what seperates D clan people from normal people (beside the Will of D) is smiling is the default of how their corpse will look?

If you turn it the other side ways, you get a mustache... If there's a period after the D then that means the D stands for something, if there is no period then it's just the letter. For example Harry S Trumans' middle name is S so no period after it.

As you said, it resembles a smile... well maybe all those that carry the D were the clan living at Laugh Tail, and to recognise themselves they decided to carry a D. This way not everybody would know but then the marines, government etc of high ranks found out and became the enemies. So what I'm saying, if you carry a D, then you probably come (or descendant) from Laugh Tail.
