This is an excellent explanation. Beyond the cartoonish exterior, the geopolitics in One Piece is very well-thought of by Oda. It's realistic as far as the conditions of the world/universe are concerned. Here's an idea that I thought of while watching this video: What if the WG actually deliberately suppressed the invention and development of flying machines? Similar to what happened in Attack on Titan.

John Gabriel Pagsanghan another thing to point out is that many countries in one piece have little to no reason to rebel against the world government. The world nobles do not seem to be that populous, so they are out of sight out of mind for like 95% of the population. And from what we have seen in the east blue and other places, the world government either barely intrudes o. What they do, or actively defends them against pirate threats. So in total, the WG is often feared, loved, or people don’t have a strong opinion either way due to their hands of control. All of which adds to the systems stability.

Why do I get the feeling that The Gorusei themselves are not the bad guys? Every time we've seen them, it honestly looks like they're just a group of guys trying their best to do their job. What if they're not trying to control the world, but protect it instead? We know that there are 3 legendary, world ending weapons, yet, we only know what 2 of them are: Pluton (a massive warship that can only be beaten by another Pluton), Poseidon (a mermaid capable of controlling the Sea Kings), and Uranos. We have been given absolutely ZERO details as to what Uranos is besides its name. So, here is a theory of mine: The Celestial Dragons are the only people capable of activating Uranos. This is why they are allowed to do whatever they damn well please, because they could easily end the world. However, it seems as if they have forgotten exactly what kind of power they wield. The Gorusei are aware of this, but are not 100% sure that all of The Dragons have forgotten, so, they follow the orders of the Dragons to ensure that Uranos is not activated. We've all seen how cruel the Dragons are, and I'm sure the Gorusei have to. Thus, if they are to activate Uranos, no one will survive. However, on the off chance that the Dragons HAVE completely forgotten of their capabilities, the Gorusei have, to their regret, outlawed the study of the history of the world, not to remain in power, but to keep the Dragons from potentially being reminded of their capabilities. Of course, this is a theory based off of some pretty minor evidence. But, if I'm right, that makes Vivi's position in the story that much more important, for she will have the capability to control Uranos.

Unpopular opinion: I think Oda didn't properly write the Germa 66 and the Vinsmoke Family. He gave us this cool backstory behind them and the simple fact that they are the family of a Straw Hat member had us pretty excited to see more of them, but in the actual events of the story they were just incredibly underwhelming. They are just pushed around to show us that Big Mom and her crew is a much bigger threat and the Germa are just pawns by comparison. I usually don't comment, but I think I had to for this. I really like the explanation of the branches of government and the overall power structure and the philosophy behind the government's institutions. I have been aware that there is a complex world underlying one piece, but when it's viewed like this I can really get a grasp on the politics and really get down to why things are the way they are. For example, the fact that the geography of One Piece is islands, and how that allows for a government to stabilize and hold power for centuries, ya know I never thought of that but it's spot on. Honestly this whole analysis is pretty fucking brilliant, especially the angle from which you are breaking down concepts. I mean, honestly I don't see that many steps between the politics we are seeing here, vs the politics we are seeing right now in the world as we speak. There are a lot of parallels and connection (not exact parallels, but a general structure that mirrors the balances of power). I think you got a got eye for these politics. I already know I'm going to think about The division of power between Marines, Intelligence, and Warlords, and how that parallels the three branches of american government. It's just really goddamn interesting. Kudos young scholar.

Shanks does not like war in general. I feel like he never really had the ambition to be a yonko, and that it was just something that happened along his journey to just travel the world with his crew. Whitebeard just wanted a family. The only reason he declared war on the marines was because the marines were planning on executing ace. As yonko, both of them had large swaths of territory to themselves where they could do whatever they want so it was in neither of their interests to revolt.

The Gorosei are basically five people who were strong enough to become the main arbiters/executors of authority in relation to the World Government. They're separate to the Tenryubitos, who don't actually do anything. Also, the Gorosei are ridiculously powerful DESPITE how old they are. Great job explaining One Piece Geo-Politics - absolutely fantastic overview of this complex and fascinating topic! Take those laurels with pride as they come from a political scientist! ;) Two things I would add as to why the World. Gov. is so successful: 1) The World Gov is expert at playing rival fractions against each other, preventing any one force from becoming dominant and thus a threat to its very own existence. This is why the world Gov. never targets any more than one Yonko at the time. Exposing only one emperor creates an opportunity for the rest of the three to exploit the struggle to expand on behalf of the attacked. This is clearly seen in the Marine-Ford arc when Kaido tried to seize the opportunity to eliminate a distracted and weakened Whitebeard (which would have probably been successful if it wasn't for Shanks' intervention.) Blackbeards exploitation of the situation can be seen as further evidence - as is the fact that the Marine Admirals refused to fight both Blackbeard and Shanks at the same time during the climax of the war. (The Yonko's are actually within a classic Prisoners' Dilemma - precluding anyone from taking a move that would leave them open to opportunistic behavior from the others) 2) An effective divide and conquer strategy preserves some form of regional autonomy within local kingdoms. This preserves resources that would otherwise be necessary to control from the political center. In this regard, local rule such as in Alabasta, Water 7, and Dressrosa is much more effective as it does not require central policing from the Marine HQ. Theories of federalism do a wonderful job explaining why such arrangements work in practice - if you are more interested. BTW, are you planning on a remake given the big news that the World Gov. might actually be a true dictatorship?

Tekking, There were plenty of royalty in the past that governed. For future reference the World Nobles can be thought of as the collective Head of State, the ceremonial leader, or symbolic leader. Of course the WN, can rule directly, they are just too lazy 99% of the time. The Gorosei would be the Head of Government.

Enel did have a flying machine and Vega Punk seems to be able to produce electricity generators/batteries. If I recall correctly, Amazon Lily used to be protected due to the calm waters around it, but the marines now have steam-powered ships. This demonstrates technology is evolving in the OP world. Oda might bring flying ships, and perhaps Enel, to help Luffy reach Mariejois.

Sure they would be perfectly serviceable out in the Four Blues, but there's an argument to be made about the conflict in the Grand Line being the primary setting and catalyst for military progress and innovation.

Buggy's power is not physical, like Mihawk's swordsmanship or the others' impressive Devil Fruit powers. He was able to rally people around him using his own charisma combined with a little bit of luck.

to be fair, buggy had the unfortunate luck of being introduced as an early villain, and in the alleged weakest sea. (though the east blue did breed a few of the strongest pirates in gol d roger, silvers rayleigh, benn beckman. and of course, luffy, zoro, and sanji will go on to be the strongest pirates in the one piece world) basically, buggy is a big fish in a small pond. he was pretty threatening at the time that luffy fought him, but as the series went on, the power of antagonists had to increase.
