OpenMW is an unbelievable achievement. An incredible piece of Free (as in Freedom) software. The first release was all the way back in 2008! 13 friggin YEARS it's been in development and it's not only achieved compatibility with the original engine but it's exceeded it in every way possible. The developers are also working on an easy to use map maker for Morrowind so that it's easier for the community to make more environments and tell more stories in new places. Every single person who has been involved in making OpenMW deserved an standing applause. Thank you you beautiful bastards for your insane dedication and work! P.S. I put 300 hours into morrowind back in 2001, explored every nook and cranny of the workd and I feel little reason to go back now.. But that game will go down as one of the greatest rpg experiences I've ever had. Nothing since has topped it. Skyrim was okay, but not even close to the depth and sophistication that morrowind had. Morrowind is literally the greatest western rpg ever made imo. In my ignorance at the time, I assumed that this was the future of gaming. I mean, how could it not be? It's so good. But unfortunately, devs decided that these games are just too expensive to make. It's astonishing how few titles we've gotten in the past 20 years that are even remotely reminiscent of such a grand rpg...

About modding - years ago, I came across a big mod package made by someone else. It was done via an .exe file, so when I installed it, it just automatically added around 70 mods to the game, I could add and remove some of these, but it was so easy. If anything like that still exists, that would be a real treasure - instead of installing mods separately, you could just run one .exe file and be set to play a modded Morrowind.

The first time I ever really got into Morrowind believe it or not wasn’t until around 2020. (Yes I was one of those people who started out played Skyrim) as such, I was already familiar with the modding scene- However I opted for the Vanilla experience the first time around playing Morrowind. I can honestly say the feeling when you walk off that boat in the beginning gave me a sort nostalgia that seemed immediately familiar even though I had never played before and really made me feel emerged in the game. Since I was a noob, I headed straight for Balmora and after some antics searching for the puzzle cube I opted to go back to Caius Cosades to see if I had missed some dialogue or *leads* and then slept in his bed to level up. Immediately I was attacked by the Dark Brotherhood which I managed to kill, and receive a note. I remembered how great the story line was for them in Oblivion and Skyrim so naturally I diverted into that quest line, and somehow, managed to finish the Tribunal (not knowing it was late game content) fairly early on, then the rest of Morrowind became relatively easy. Such good memories! It’s never too late to get into this game!

I love the metal analogies lol. I'm 27 and grew up with nu metal as a kid and got into metalcore as a teen. I like how you had respect for all the genres since we all know metal has a lot of elitest. I have more hours in skyrim than other tes games but morrowind is my favorite. I love the world building and the way you have to be a bit more immersed with your navigation alone. Morrowind is that game that you cant pick up and play on a whim or jump back into after a long break like you can skyrim. you have to dedicate a bit of time to your playthrough or you will be utterly lost and i think that is a bigger barrier to your hours played than skyrim. I enjoyed it more but that was because of the dedication, which is completely at odds how often i am in the mood to play it.

I remember finding Morrowind in a pack of free software my Dad got when he bought a new PC. It was just sitting there in a box of stuff with all the instillation disks for all the programs (back when optical drives were a thing). It probably sat there for a few years before I found it and put it on my computer. I was young and hadn't had much experience with massively expansive games like that. I got through the first couple of towns and realized I was waaaay over my head. When I got older I played Oblivion and Skyrim. I always wondered what Morrowind would be like now that I am better able to understand everything about it. On a side note but sort of related, I just got into Lord Of The Rings Online and I am really enjoying the old school feel. The world is huge, the game is a little overwhelming at first, but there's plenty of resources to figure things out if the game didn't do a good enough job of teaching you itself. You can even play a ton of it for free, and you will earn rewards while playing that you can actually buy the expansion packs that you don't already have.

You should create a modpack of all the mods you run and upload it somewhere for easy installation for new modders of the game :)
@teksyndicate2 жыл бұрын
I would totally do that... it's really easy because you only have to open Mod Organizer and tell it where your openMW is located.... but some modders are very uncool with their mods being shared this way because it keeps people from going to their site or profile pages. I'd probably need to ask each modder if they were cool with it... otherwise I'd have a righteous mob on my hands that I don't entirely disagree with.

@@teksyndicate If you make a wabbajack installer it should be okay. It auto endorses any mod it downloads. And configures everything for the end user automatically.

The Lore is one of the most inpressive things about it - Dagoth Ur is one of the most unique and interesting villains due to the circumstances and the happenstance of his journey to villany (and undeath). How he came to be as he was in the story was something that seemingly happened by pure accident despite his exposure to such forces. There's really nothing quite like him.

Amazing guide, went trough Enderal recently and kinda thought about Morrowind a lot. Used to play it when I was younger but it was too complicated for me back then. Gotta give this a try, just wondering before starting all of this, do you have a list of mods you usually run with?

From my experience, Arena was very much informed by first-person dungeon crawlers games like Wizardry or Eye of the Beholder etc. Tough, obscure and more than a little hostile to newbies. Daggerfall was an attempt to remake Arena bigger and better but it still felt a little shallow and repetitive despite the monstrous efforts of its devs. Morrowind was everything Daggerfall wanted to be but with a smaller, more focused scope that allowed for more depth. I always thought that despite its production values and epic story, Oblivion suffered from a sort of "Tolkien envy", but then again, look at the time when it was developed and published... everyone was competing to be the next LOtR. Skyrim moved past that, but I thought it was a little to console-oriented for my tastes. I'll have to try it someday.

As someone who plays unmodded, I still find these videos fascinating - and I greatly appreciate you telling would-be modders to not change the dice roll combat!

All do respect, but I'd like to ask, why? I've played unmodded many times, don't get me wrong. Xbox and pc. Just curious if you're averse. Cause, if you're fine with mod adjacent, at least try open mw as is and look through all the settings.
@kylejoly577 Жыл бұрын
@@dajnor Hey thanks for being kind in asking! I just really appreciate the product they made all of those years ago as-is, and find the generally jank/imbalances to be charming rather than something that needs fixing.

"But it also has the most insufferable audience that are always going to remind you that it is superior." You just described me in the best sense. I try so hard to get my friends to play Morrowind because it's so damn good and still holds up 20 years later. It's literally the BEST Elder Scrolls game but the accessibility compared to most modern games leaves a lot to be desired for most people. If you can get past the caveats of the game and LEARN it, you will fall in-love.

Saw this video a few days ago and decided to give it a try. I went through one of the mod lists, and it ends with the Delta Plugin. They seem to emphasize how important it is, although it doesn't have the direct interaction with Mod Organizer and it's a little confusing. If you happen to see this comment, would you consider adding a note on what you've done? I'm curious if you skipped this mod entirely or if you could show or explain how you installed it in your folders. Regardless, you've made a great video and thanks for your help!

I want to try Morrowind and it's going to be my first time playing this game, should i download mods or should i just play it as it is to get the "authentic" experience?
@DGol20152 жыл бұрын
You can play as is, but some things i found frustrating and fixed: * no magicka regen without using the wait button for in-game hours. Maybe i was hasty in doing that, because you can actually use enchanted items to cast spells for you. * leveling. I hate Oblivion for its leveling system, and i found myself grinding for efficient attribute gains. Get CCCP for a better leveling system. On first playing, i also started with a graphics extender and a bug fixer. I don't think I'm missing anything from vanilla by doing so.

props for telling people not to mod combat, it may be janky but it's the OG experience and makes it all the more rewarding when your characters gets more experienced and actually starts hitting stuff.

This is such an insanely detailed look into how to optimise this game for a modern audience. Going into detail about what options do and your preferences is really nice and makes it a whole lot less daunting getting into this. This has been so incredibly helpful. Also thumbs up for the metal analogies lmao

I don't know if I can leave a link on KZbin but if you do a search for How to Integrate OpenMW with Steam you can learn to open it in your library or send a shortcut to your desktop. This Guide will highlight the steps needed to Integrate OpenMW with Steam so that your gameplay Hours are Recorded and get access to the Overlay UI Ingame.

Great tutorial, thanks for the help! Not sure if anyone else encountered this problem but if, after adding the MO2toOpenMW data to the plugins folder in MO2, you get the "No module named PyQt5" error when trying to open MO2, try installing ModOrganizer-to-OpenMW 4.00.00 instead of 3.00.00 . Helped me!

I hold Skyrim as my all-time favorite game and I had gotten Morrowind and Oblivion in a Steam sale forever ago. So I wanted to see what this game was made of and watched this video. I played Morrowind from late May to the end of July and it truly felt like a week or two. This game leapt into my top 10 games of all-time it was THAT GOOD. Thank you so much for this video - you truly made my summer.

I replay the game every 3-4 years. A section of it anyway. I actually started 5-6 differents characters over the years, but actually just ended the main story only once. The world is so big that there is regions that I have barelly been in all my runs. Oh, and Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 still works as I just re-insalled it a coupple of days ago. Took 10-15 minutes to install and I got pretty much the quality that you see in that clip. Running with windows 10.
