Kolbalt sets are different than the ratchets sold individually. Note, the sets have screws below the quick release while the individuals have screws on the opposite side below the anvil. The ratcheting mechanism for individuals is a single sliding pawl. Pack double pawls full of grease but use fine oil for sliding pawls.

I have an old Kobalt I wanna lube up and did a search and this video came up, maybe cause you show the internals. What do I use as lube when I put it back together? I was gonna use use general automotive grease but wasn't sure.
@TonyTheTechnician2 жыл бұрын
Grease can sometimes cause them to bind bc the pawl will stick to the gear. I would use like a light oil like 3 in 1

Was that Kobalt dry? If so, the lack of lubrication would also contribute to the tinny sound.
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
Yes it was. Lubrication helped a little bit but it's mainly the pawls vibrating against the springs. Either way the operation of the ratchet is fine just the design differences cause a different sound and feel. 👍

What are your thoughts on the Gearwrench 90 tooth 1/2” ratchets? The ratchet head is as thin as Tekton but the width is very bulky.
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
Ya they are a bit bigger than the tekton but I still haven't had anybissues with mine
@sfx19993 жыл бұрын
That Kobalt mechanism is derived from the Proto style mechanism. Proto still makes a 24 tooth version that has the same mechanism as it did 80 years ago. It should be strong enough, in theory. That mechanism has low backdrag, though, so it's probably worth keeping around. I think I would get the 72 tooth version from Harbor Freight, though, since they cost less.
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
Ya I'm still using it on some mobile repairs and it's doing OK.

I have the Kobalt, I like it a lot. I'm a do it your selfer. I got mine is a socket set at Christmas time, was either $20 or $30 so I got a deal. $30 for just the ratchet is too much. I think Kobalt will not be around much longer since Craftsman came to Lowes.
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
Very nice. Glad to hear it. I don't think Craftsman is pushing any brands out. Craftsman does sell nearly as well. I think kobalt will continue to be around.

I am really happy with the GearWrench 90 tooth ratchets I also have a couple Tektons and they are good just a bit less than GearWrench ones. One other thing is around here the big box stores make replacing almost any thing a hassle an GW and TEKTON make it easy
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I would rather deal with the fast online warranty of tekton than deal with box store warranties. 👍

Lol i saw a guy the other day doing a comparison of tekton and icon saying the icon is more expensive and it really shows in the quality because its bigger, he opens it up and says cause the pawl as more teeth and the gear that connects to the anvil was thicker and the whole tool was just bigger that means its stronger, so apparently the kobalt is the vastly superior tool in this scenario
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
Lmao wow now that's funny 😆 what great information. I'll have to look for that

@@TonyTheTechnician to be fair the guy seemed to take the criticism in the comments section fairly well, i was kinda surprised, both that a lot of people pointed out that the quality of the metal plays a much bigger role, and that he thanked people for pointing it out, still a bit funny, "bigger is better" lol

I bought the Kobalt ratcheting wrenches on sale which are just fine. But do not have that pro feel to them. Hard to beat Tekton quality and price for the ratchets, especially with the 10% rewards.

And now that I've gone farther in this video, the Kobalt has the same mechanism as Pittsburgh. Almost identical. I also lost a spring. And wouldn't put that few teeth under too much tension.

I'm the same way Tony I am not a big fan of a lot of the "kit" ratchets... I had a Kobalt set a few years ago and it was a decent no complaints....I ended up giving it to my brother and he still uses it...also have that DeWalt 192-piece set and I always use different ratchets... they're not bad they're usable but there are better options....I think they did a re-design and changed the ratchets to a better style...

Why don't you like quick release? Breaking anvils?
@satamanschmidt34283 жыл бұрын
I don't like them because the make the use of my digital angle gauge difficult. I need a smooth surface on the back of the ratchet to attach the magnetic digital angle gauge and the button of the quick release screws this up.
@TonyTheTechnician3 жыл бұрын
I personally just like the smooth backing and not having to release the socket every time. It's more of a personal preference.
@andybub453 жыл бұрын
I can’t stand those Kobalt ratchets. The main issue I had with them was the direction selector slipping constantly. I bought a new supposedly “updated” one, it still did it. The sound of the gears is awful and so is the head thickness. Not to mention made in CHINA. I replaced them with the Tekton 90 tooth ratchets, made in Taiwan, super happy now, worlds difference.

Haha ya they are on completely different levels

I do wish tekton made a 1/2 non flex ratchet that was a intermediate size to their 10 inch and 24 inch. I would love something like a 16 inch one for normal but higher torque task.

good review. Kobalt tools are made by apex which is gear wrench. I have texton, kobalt, icon, harbor freight, and old craftsman professional. Texton is by far the best and icon is the worst. A little bit of cleaning the kobalt and wihite lithium grease makes all of them quiter and smoother.
