Explosion rips through lithium battery factory in South Korea

At least 22 people were killed when a powerful explosion and fire tore through a lithium battery factory in South Korea on Monday, local officials said.
Over 100 people were working in the factory in Hwaseong city, south of the capital Seoul, when the fire broke out, firefighter Kim Jin-young said.
Kim Jae-ho, Fire and Disaster Prevention professor at Daejeon University, said the fire had probably spread too quickly for workers to escape.

These batteries are very scary, when they catch alight nothing can stop them, also they are very hard to extinguish once burning. The speed of the flames and heat is extremely fast, making escape difficult.

This firm Aricell makes lithium-thionyl-chloride cells, which are not rechargeable. These are not for electric vehicles but for applications such as "smart" meters in which they are permanently installed. They last some years and the entire device is scrapped when the battery is depleted.
